Title: Apex seals
Post by: mikeeech on April 20, 2004, 07:08:28 PM
Anyone have experience of wear for ceramic apex seals?

How much abuse can they take and would it be sensible to fit them in a road car with a ported engine for longer life?

Or is this jus paranoia gone mad.

Mike

Hi Mike,

There resistance to detonation is far superior to stock seals.
The wear against rotor housings is minimum and again far superior to stock seals. However you need tough springs to help get good compression as there sealing is not as good as stock seals and low compression = less power.

Ceramics are good for major power upgrades.
They are also user friendly on the road.
I have built many road going engines with these seals as well as race engines with no problems. The trick is to have the engine mapped properly to extract the power and make sure that new rotor housings are used on the engine build.
Kind regards
