Afternoon,
I got home from Japshow yesterday and upon leaving my friends a few hours later the coolant buzzer came on when I started the car. Turned her off and checked the levels.
There was no visible coolant in the filler neck, no leaks visible from the AST and the third tank behind the drivers side headlight was very full of coolant.
So, your opinions on the following please:
A: Would a failure of the rad cap cause it to loose 1/2 pint+ of coolant in 50 miles?
B: Could there be a blockage in the system which is not allowing the coolant to run back into the system after it has expanded?
C: Could the AST of failed but it not be visible?
D: Could a water seal be failing? I\'ve notice the occasional hickup in acceleration recently but only very mild. Otherwise she runs fine.
I\'d rather it be A or a simple fix of B or C but obvilously not D!!!
What checks should I do?
Help please, I can\'t afford a rebuild but even worse if she sh@ts herself while giving some beans one day.
There is a chance its leaking from the thermostat but not enough to spot?
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, think I\'ll be driving to a tuner again sometime soon :Grrr
I had the same thing the other day matey ;)
My stat gasket had faild, so as a tep measure I took the housing off, dried it up & put it back together using silicone selant as a tep fix! after this it was throwing coolant out of the expantion tank behind the light! this turned out to be an air lock, so I popped the throttle body water pipe off & bled the system, along with popping the cap off the AST to clean the seals (where I found a little crap!). whent for a spin yesterday & all seems to be OK again!
If you seal the housing with silicone, bolt it all up, but don\'t tighten it properly for 12 - 24hrs as this allows the stuff to go off & give a better seal when you tighten it up properly!

Ok, update. Purchased a new AST cap and fitted that yesterday. I don\'t know why i bothered because I thought I\'d start it and take it out and it only just started!!!! it sorted itself out after a couple of minutes of coughing and what looked like steam coming from around the turbo area.
I don\'t think any other problem thsn water in my engine would cause this. B@LL@CKS!!!
So I\'ll be a passenger at the Nurburgring this year and I might be in my beemer for RS6, gutted and seriously depressed :(
She\'s booked into WGT for Monday 13th, I\'ll be at RS6 but in my Beemer :(
Gutted for you Rob, let me know if there is anything i can do to help?
Ok, so I spent £100 getting to WGT and back including a little for Pip\'s time and as I expected, water seal failure!!!!!!
It goes into the body shop next monday and after that I\'ll be draining the coolant and putting her in the garage for at least 6 months while I save some cash.
If anyone can advise me which hose I need to disconnect to drain the coolant that would be appreciated.
Hasnt your engine got a warranty from the last builder?
Never been rebuilt, she did about 50,000 miles on the original engine.
Now it\'s time for v mount, ports, injectors etc etc :)
lovely stuff
