Title: Crunch on gearbox - FD3?
Post by: suba on June 18, 2009, 12:45:26 PM
When cold the gearbox on my FD3 seems to be a bit \'off\' when going from 1st to 2nd occasionally - not all the time.  Once in a while it does it from 2nd to 3rd as well.  No grinding noise, but does not pop into gear smoothly.

The gearbox oil is new - I\'m guessing this is down to worn synchro?  (box has done 85,000 miles or so) and not had massive power put through it...

I\'m tempted to wait until it gets worse, but the clutch is going to be changed soon anyway, so would make sense to do the gearbox too if it\'s going to need doing....

Does it happen when you\'re ragging it, or in normal driving too? Does the clutch bite close to the floor or really high? I had that trouble when my pressure plate was past its best and wouldn\'t release fully, but it was only a major problem when I was shifting at high RPM. I have a gearbox for sale if you do need one

rpm does not seem to make much difference, but the clutch does seem to bite a little high.  It a standard clutch - now I am wondering if running 0.8 bar (was 0.7 when  I got the car 3 months ago) has pushed the clutch a bit much, though I would have thought that this would be indicated by it slipping - and there is not even a hint of slip.:xconfused

I do have a single plate clutch on the way and Atomic Rex have offered to re-build my gearbox when the clutch is done, so this might be the best option for me I guess.  If it turns out that I need a box then I\'ll give you a shout.

I always thought that a notchy gear change into 2nd when cold is quite normal on a lot of fd`s.
