Title: water injection for a twin turbo FD
Post by: michaelb on June 09, 2009, 04:42:11 PM
Hi All

What do you think of water injection for a twin turbo FD modified to produce up-to 350 BHP?  The car may spend a month or so in Marbella with very high temperatures.  Would that help the intake temperature on a twin turbo?  Kerim at Powergains Motorsport would supply and fit it for me at a exceptionally good price.  Incidentally he was getting on a hot day in one of the single high powered FD belonging to a customer around 10 to 15C only but the car also had a huge IC thought..

I was planning on doing this to my Twin Turbo before some fduker nicked it  :Grrr

I was going to get it done just to bring the intake temps down not so that I can run higher boost etc.  I found when sitting in traffic or in my case queuing up for drifting, the intakes would soar. Not good when your just about to go sit on the red line sideways  :eek

If you are planning on taking it to a hotter climate it has to be a good thing to be able to help keep the intake temps down?

I have water injection in my car purely when the temps creep up and I want to bring them down. Usually its a case of giving the car a quick blast with the water inj on and this brings it down 5-10 degrees depending on how long.

I have managed to get it down to around 20 degrees but it usually hovers around mid 20s. It did work wonders when I went out on the track at Snetterton though in mine at around 30 degrees constant but my mates FD (stock bar induction kit) and that was hitting over 60-90 degrees !!!!!!

Best mod I ever did but as said the car isnt mapped with it on, I think if you were planning on doing that you\'d need an indicator to let you know when the tank was running low plus better spark using an ignition amp eg HKS Twin Power

Just my 2p.

If you want to go crazy though mix the water with Methanol, Scott (sdminus) let me feel his intake manifold after a spirited drive and it was stone cold !!!! This was in fairly warm weather and with a few other mods eg fmic, ducting for intakes etc.

Thanks for the info, very helpful.  It’s important to get other people’s feedback before I set up another mod.  Is this WI automatic or manual and if it is automatic how long does the water last?  Kerim was going to use the water bottle for the wipers..

I used to live/spend alot of time in Marbella with my old FD and it was fine with regards to temps, had a nice open vented bonnet (pic bellow) tho with large front mount :rollin:rollin:rollin !!

Just use ur a/c button to keep temps down in traffic!!

Its wired into a switch mate so I can turn it on whenever plus its a dual stage kit from coolingmist so when boost is about 0.2 bar the first jet comes on then about 0.7 bar the second one comes on.

I have the huge UK rear wash bottle that holds more than 5 litres or something so the water injection lasts ages but obviously depends on how much you use it. Just remember though it has to be distilled water !!

I\'ve a coolingmist kit on a 360bhp TT FD. However, despite having the car a year and a half I\'ve never run it! It\'s now fitted and  set up and I\'m doing a track day at Llandow this weekend - I\'ll let you know how I get on. I am concerned that the nozzle is a little oversized though.

Thanks again, I think we are talking about the same kit it will have a swich and it will also come on with certain boost...

Great, I guess the a / c will be on any way otherwise I will cook my self in the car LOL
Your car looks really good, is that the one in Marbella?  If so it must have turned a head or two !!
Incidentally, do you know any tuners / garages which modify jap cars in the area of Marbella.  I was in Marbella 2 weeks ago and I just missed a huge meet of modified jap cars, it would be nice to know a garage / mechanic who would know what do in case of any problems with my car

I was always told it should never be tap water, the same reason for not putting tap water in the coolant.

Maybe I\'m being too paranoid. :)

be careful with meth, it can run lean top end, as I have seen one engine det that used water and meth in the WI kit where the map wasnt checked or allowed for this. Mine isnt mapped for meth incase i run out on WOT but the map is checked to make sure it doesnt run too lean at 7k plus revs

Yeah I was only talking about 5% meth.

5% meth is fine. The big single boys tend to use 50/50 mix ie Blitzboy, myself and a couple of others on here.

20 litres of distilled water from Unipart will do you for the whole year for £15 :)

:(..is it true that you should use something other than plastic lines for meth as it would melt them...whats the guide for setting up ?
