Title: Is it possible to deflood.........
Post by: FD Type R on June 02, 2009, 10:42:39 AM
by towing her off in 3rd gear?

I\'m not that technically minded and I\'m a bit unsure about removing spark plugs (especially from underneath:3Confused) so would it be possible to clear my flooding problem in my 3rd generation twin turbo with stock engine by towing her off?

She\'s been stood for about 3 months and when I started her up a couple of days ago she started but then cut out when I left her idling to warm up, I should have sat in the car to catch it before the stall damn it:reallymad.

On trying to restart her she nearly caught but then just turned over and since then I\'ve tried her a couple of times over the last two days but to no avail.

If towing her isn\'t possible would the flood clear on its own if I let her stand for a few more days?

Apologies to the many mechanically minded on here for being a technophobe:xconfused

Yes a jump start should deflood her. Before you do that try turning the engine over with the EGI fuse removed (fuse box in the engine, should be labelled). Crank a few times, put the fuse back, then try and start with your right foot flat to the floor then slowly lift the throttle.

im not sure if it would evapourate and de-flood itself. my friends flooded and even after being stood for three weeks it was still flooded! he cured it by removing the fuel pump relay. he had the aa out and they removed the plugs and the relay and cranked it over to try and remove the fuel that way. whenever mine floods, i take the relay out and then it starts first time and before it cuts out i plug the relay back in!

Cheers for that gear1275 & JohnnyP, by the fuel pump relay do you mean the EGI fuse that JohnnyP is talking about above?

I removed the EGI today and cranked it over a few times before replacing it and trying to start it, she nearly caught but frustratingly not enough to get her going so I think I\'m going to leave her for a couple of days and try again, failing that I think it\'ll be a tow off in third gear although I don\'t think the Veilside nose cone will appreciate that too much :eek

If anyone has any other suggestion they would be much appreciated:cheers

just take the plugs out from under the bonnett... i changed my plugs in 10 minutes from the engine bay rather than going underneith.. its not as hard as it looks just make sure you get the plug leads right when putting them back on the plugs :)

You don\'t need to mess about with fuses. Just turn over on full throttle, that cust the fuel and also allows air to pump through to clear the excess fuel.

i\'ve heard leaving a flooded engine standing for a while can damage it? can anyone back this up or is it typical Rotary Wives Tales?

i left mine for two days and did this:

all plugs out, wd40\'d and stuck on top of the boiler
squirt a bit of oil into each plug hole
crank (i did this by hand so i didn\'t have to bugger about with fuses and relays)
replace the plugs and jump start it

started just fine!

Thanks for all your advice guys. I put my battery on charge last night and I think I\'m gonna try Timmys theory first as it seems the simplest.....and that suits me :yes

Fully charged battery, throttle full down, turn the key and cross my fingers hoping that the fuel cuts off and the air blows through to clear the flood.

If that fails I think the plugs are gonna have to come out but tbh when I\'ve looked under the bonnet I can\'t even see them let alone get to them

jack it up and shimmy in underneath the passenger wheel, much easier!

they\'re just over halfway down the block and are not too difficult to get out with a stubby ratchet and a plug socket. just make sure you use the right size/type socket and take your time, you really don\'t want to damage the thread.
