Title: RX7 Automatic Gearbox Problem
Post by: Barker_GAJ on April 18, 2004, 03:28:23 PM
I have a 1994 RX7 (grey import), chassis no. FD3S205102 with an automatic gearbox.

At the moment it will not change up into 4th gear. I\'ve checked the transmission oil, and the belt tensioner under the car and they are both ok.

The automatic transmission specialist I took the car to says that the gearbox is "flaring out". Is this a common problem, and if so, is it easily fixable e.g. by replacing a few of the gearbox parts?

The specialist says that he could remove the gearbox, strip it down and rebuild it and replace the defective parts, but this is labour intensive and therefore expensive. He suggests that I could just get him to fit a recon gearbox, and this will save on the labour, but he has quoted me £1500 + VAT for the part alone.

I have got another quote for a gearbox for £600 + VAT, but if the above is a common problem with the RX7 auto gearbox, I would rather just replace a few parts, than have to fork out for a whole new box.

Can anyone help.....?

Cheers

Garrett

Hi Garrett and welcome to MRC.

The Auto boxes in these cars normaly very good and give no trouble.

For a S/H unit try Tim @ RXMotors.co.uk or andrew @Jimmys-rx7.co.uk

Hope this helps

Clive

Thanks for your prompt response.

I have another question for you if I may....

Is there any way to diagnose my gearbox fault without removing it and stripping it down e.g. with some electronic diagnosis equipment? I ask this, as to do all this is labour intensive (and therefore expensive), and I don\'t want to waste money unnecessarily.

Cheers

Garrett

Hi Garret, I have an auto box on mine as well never had any problems with it in 3 years of ownership. When I had an Apexi ecu fitted Geff at RE Worx adviced that I may experience problems as the ECU did\'nt like auto boxes much. Do you know if you have an aftermarket ECU? could be causing the problem. With regards the cost of recon unit seem\'s steep, Geff said he could convert mine too a manual box and said it was fairly straight forward and the price he quoted was cheaper than the price you have been quoted for a recon box. You could consider a manual conversion, also my box takes some time too change up too fourth and without much speed will stay in third. May be wrong but I thought it was more like a overdrive option, probably wrong as I say. Maybe someone else on here can advice anyway good luck solving the problem best regards Leigh.

Hi Garrett
Real sorry but that one l can\'t help you with.

Normal mecanical way would be to take the sump pan off and see if there is any debris to be found.

Guys

Thanks for the information.

I don\'t know if my car has an aftermarket ecu fitted. Is there a simple way to check (I\'m not very good at the techie stuff...!). Where is Geff at RE Worx based? I\'m in Wales, so hopefully he\'s not too far away.

Also, I\'ll have the sump taken off and see what debris there is in there.

I\'ll also wait and see if I can get a better quote than £600 + VAT for a recon box, as I\'ve gotten rather used to driving an auto - I must be getting old.

I appreciate your help so far - getting any information about the RX7 seems to be a tricky business...!

Cheers

Garrett

Geff is in Portsmouth.

Do you have to have a recon box? I\'d go with a good used box I think? As Clive said, Give Tim or Andrew a shout and see what they can offer you...
