Title: Oil cooler fans?
Post by: Jono FD3 on May 30, 2009, 02:33:53 PM
guys, when I went to japfest the other week, we had just been sat at motorway speeds then straight in to stationary trafic queing to get in to combe! when we were sat in the traffic the oil temps started to clime... basicaly I see about 65c on the gauge when we are cruising along, but while queing it went up to about 85 - 90c and obviously the oil pressure droped with the thinning oil! So at this point I thought about putting small motorbike cooling fans behind the oil coolers ready for such instances in the future!

Has any one done this & is it worth while doing??

Cheers

mine does this too, isn\'t it normal? Too cool and you get inefficient burn dont you? interesting!

I was just thinking of doing it to keep my oil pressure up when the car is stationery in traffic! the oil coolers have a thermostat in them too, so the oil shouldn\'t drop too low in temp! just thought it would be a nice idea for piece of mine!

Isn\'t the oil pump a mechanical pump ? You will see less pressure in traffic because the revs are much lower. Would have thought that wasn\'t too crazy a temp.

The water pump is exactly the same thing as the revs drop the l/min does too.

95o isn\'t an overly high oil temp - I think the number is 120o where even the more expensive oils start to degrade. Been many years since I got there, but I am running a major cooler for an FB.

Also bear in mind your guage might not be true. I found recently that when I was roaming around the MOTEC feeds the true engine temp was around 10o lower than the guage was reading. Depends where you\'re picking the temp feed up from in it\'s cycle, calibration of the guage etc etc.

Not too worried about the oil temp to be honest, it\'s just the side affect of lower oil pressure with thinner oil due to the heat! I\'m taking the temp reading from the oil filter plate, so I know the temp is a little cooler there than the rest of the system!

Most of the after market ones pick up at the oil filter in a pedestal.

Wouldn\'t it be hotter there beacause its just about to pass through the coolers ?or does it flow the over way :2Confused

are you still using the stock radiator for the coolant side of things aswell though?
because if your water cooling is very inefficient that will obviously directly affect the oil cooling efficiency aswell.

What about wraping your oil lines with heatwrap too? that could help eliminate heat soak :wiggle

Heat soak isn\'t a problem with my setup matey!! My water temps didn\'t cross 80c sat in the traffic for 30 mins! only ever heard the fans kick in once since I have done the V-mount and that was sat on the rams at MOT time!

jono did you get anywhere with the oil cooler fan mod? i was sat in a lot of traffic today with the oil temps reading 95, seemed a higher than i\'d like. water temps were 88 but was a really hot day. thats with a vmount!

But thanks for the reminder... I\'m going to look in to it now ;)

Hmmmmm. The warning function on my oil system doesn\'t even come on till 110 degrees. I wouldn\'t have thought 90s were too much to worry about? In fact, sticking fans in the narrow ducting might actually decrease the general efficiency of the coolers for all the time the fans aren\'t working?

Very true nick, but you would only need to put a fan on one of the coolers ;) so in affect at worst you would have 1 and a half oil coolers operating (early FD\'s only had a single cooler & coped fine in the UK climate while driving) and when stuck in traffic you can flick a switch and again have the affect of driving at 20mph (ish) keeping the temps at a cool level!

you will see a lower oil pressure when the oil is warm due to the stock thermal pellet opening

i was thinking i might mount a fan somewhere down that way on one side (but not stuck right up on the cooler) to generally increase air circulation at standstill, since theres a bit of room with my setup, might reduce heatsoak. Should be able to tell if its doing any good when i get round to installing the faster temp sensor thingie.

had a bit of an experiment today, took out the bumper indicator (wasn\'t plugged in anyway) and made a grille, then stuck a fan in utilising a quick alu bracket and the existing front splitter bolts - and made some ducting channelling the air out the grille. I wired it via a fuse to a spare switch on the centre console, it works whether the ignition is on or off. It was a spare switch normally used for the fog lights. I do intend to put a timer circuit or maybe thermostat circuit in there someday. It blows a fair gale out the side, but havent been for a drive to see if it makes any difference to oil temps in traffic yet.
the fan is a 12v waterproof fan, low amps and good flow.

Well I managed to score myself a brand new slime line elecy fan from an aprilia motorcycle (one of the super bike ones not a 125!) cost me 20 notes deliverd! hope to have it on Tuesday, then it\'s just to fit it to the drivers cooler & away we go!
Shall report my findings as soon as I test it (which wont be long!) also show a step by step in my project post!

having run mine for the last week or so, i am quite pleased - just with one fan blowing out the side port, it manages to drop the oil temps by 10 degrees when i switch it on whilst cruising, when booting it it seems to drop it by about 5 degrees or so.

Where is your fan mounted Ash?? Is it the inside of the bumper by the mesh, or on to the oil cooler itself?

Jono
Title: Oil cooler fans?
Post by: ashc on August 25, 2009, 06:10:46 PM
it stands about 5cm from the side of the bumper, sucking air across the back of the cooler, and ducted up to the mesh i made where the light was. I\'ve replaced the light unit on the other side with mesh too, but havent put a fan in yet.

what did you use for the mesh matey as it looks alot better than those horid amber jobs!!
Title: Oil cooler fans?
Post by: ashc on August 26, 2009, 07:07:57 AM
i made a quick mold of the original light in wood, and bent the mesh over it using a rubber hammer. If you leave a tab a couple of inches wide and perhaps three inches long on each long edge, you can fold it round the inside of the bumper (if you get what i mean!) and it stays there solidly without any other attachments. I expect youre well capable of making a mold but i could send you mine if you want?

how about something like these:

radicalrc.com ducted fans (http://www.radicalrc.com/shop/?cart=3033499&cat=119&)
eBay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GWS-Electric-Ducted-Fan-EDF40H-Six-Blades_W0QQitemZ120423265033QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN?hash=item1c09c93309&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14)

i was thinking of building a shroud to go on the rear of my intercooler and sticking two or three of these on to suck air through.

Title: how to fit an oil cooler fan
Post by: Jono FD3 on August 30, 2009, 11:19:54 AM
Well, not quite as straight forward as I was hopeing and I still have to wire it up (hopefuly today!)
Anyway, here are some pics of what I used & how I fitted it!

The fan is a cooling fan of an aprilia superbike (not sure what one!) Basicaly I took a gamble on the size & for once I blagged it!! Here\'s a pic of the fan:

Next was to make the mounting brackets..... I opted for a through cooler mounting system. all you need is a few cable ties Spongey foam & some plastic!

Now you need to cut the zippy bits off a few ties to make the securing bits:

Now you need to strip the inner arch back so you can see the cooler (on which ever size ou want) I opted for the driverside on mine, so I had to unmount the header tank for the coolant system!

I also had to unbolt the lower mount for the oil cooler & take it out to allow me enough space to get the fan in!!

Now you need to feed the cable ties through the cooler fins (spongey bit between the fan & cooler on each mount point)

Now put the secureing zippy bits on the outer side/ (again foamy bit, then plastic, then zippy bit)

Pull them tight:

Now cut the excess off:

Hay presto, fan mounted... now wire it up & rebuild the inner wing ;)

great job as always Jono.

Where did you get the fans from and how much?  Instaed of using the plastic tie ups i would use very small bolts using same method.  The fan bound to move and with flex/ rubbing + heat it will move the plastic tie up or may even break. just my 2p :)

The bigger issue may be fatigue on the braze joints from the twisting motion of the fan. I destroyed an aluminium rad with a 16in fan !

Don\'t take this the wrong way - kudos for trying something new, but looking at those oil coolers - the bent fins aren\'t going to be helping, I would have used a pair of tweezers to straighten them out, get air flowing through the cooler before adding a fan.

it looks a bit like a pc fan, but it is fully waterproof and industrially-rated, but probably not as tough as jonos bike fan.

stills seems to be helpful, certainly drops the oil temps by a average of 5 degrees when i switch it on. I also left it on all night a week or so ago, forgot to turn it off - and didn\'t seem to drain the batt at all.

good point about the bent fins, i spent ages with a stanley knife blade straightening them as best as i could!

Sorry to bring an old thread back, but just thought I\'d report my findings from this mod!!

Awesome.... Totaly worth doing! why mazda didn\'t do it from factory & have not got a clue!! Basicaly I fired mine up the other day & left it idle in the drive (as it\'s parked in by the old mans 24 foot boat :( ) and let everything come up to temp. anyway, I came back to it & saw the oil temp was creeping over the 80c (at the filter housing) so I thought.... don\'t realy want it to be that high & then I rememberd about the mod LOL!! flicked the switch and within 3 mins the oil temp was down to 65c & oil pressur came up.....

If you haven\'t done this mod, it\'s worth thinking about doing it... specialy the drift boys when your high RPM with little air flow!
