We are working on a 20B cosmo engine transplant into an FD, thought i would post some pics forr those who are interested. A lot of you will probably find this very dull.
Started with an imported 92 FD with a blown engine.
stripped the engine bay completely.
Took the whole front end off, wheels, suspension, subframe and steering.
Fitted a Cosmo complete front end so it would take the 20b with its strange shaped sump, also its a lot more robust.
Slotted the engine and AUTO gearbox in, yes Auto, some of you may wonder why auto, but those of you that have driven a cosmo will appreciate how good the gearbox is. We managed to get our cosmo down to 5.5 seconds 0-60 without touching boost, we just removed that cats and put an airfilter on.
We have stripped the block completely and thrown the twin turbos away, we have a hugh Vortec V2 SQ supercharger now bolted on the front.
The intercooler is two cosmo intercoolers welded together.
We still have a long way to go.....
Pic of the cosmo subframe in the FD.
it will be a veilside when its finished.
Great, keep us upto date, this is interesting, to me anyway.
Well done. Would love to have the skills.
i would love to have the time. And a bit more skill would come in handy, might take the trial error out of things!
Is this the car Ross will be running at rotorstock??
If so running out of time guys.
No this is nothing to do with Ross\'s car. I have seen it and is totally different to look at and Tony is a million miles away from Ross. And I should hope that Ross is much closer to completion than this.
no, this is nothing to do with dragon. he is 250 miles away. we just play about, were not in the business.
Nice looking project :)
Do you have a realistic target date in mind to have it running? I\'d love to have a good look at it when it\'s near completion!
What ECU have you opted for? And can it control the gearbox?
Regards
Max
we will probably go for a microtec, as for controlling the gearbox, thats a bridge that needs crossing, as i said above, there is a lot of trial and error, and thats one of the things we will have to sort out once it is running, unless of course you can give some much needed info. Time is a valuable thing unfortunately, its only weekends and when the wife will let meso it wont be done for rotorstock 04 but should be done for TOTB 04 fingers crossed.
I was impressed with your figures. Do you map yours using the datalogit, if so, on the rollers or the M3? You temps are also excellent, do you think they had a lot to do with the massive power?
Look forward to seeing you at the 1/4 mile. I am trying to go next weekend in my 13b FD, and i think tim is trying aswell. Would be good to get an idea of whats times we will be getting at Rotorpop.
regards
tony
Auto gearbox is a problem that one or two people have had some problems with when going to an aftermarket ecu, but I\'m not sure what the cures have been - OJ has had this problem for one.
Yes, I\'ve mapped mine with datalogit on the road, along with a Motec PLM for tuning the fuel maps. I am blessed with a beautiful straight two mile long / no junctions section of B road near my house that allows pulls up to about 160 mph, even the Police just leave me to it, they know what I\'m up to!!
In fact they use the same stretch of road for their own VASCAR training about once a week. Just as well I know them!
My intake temps always seem low, I think because the Garrett is working in its efficiency band, pre intercooler temps must be relatively low, at least compared to the stock twins. You\'ll probably find the same with your huge snail!
Hopefully I can get my act together and do Pod next Sunday, I just hope that the weather is better than today.
Regards
Max
is your GT35 turbo, a ball bearing turbo? most seem to go for the 35/40, is this anything like yours?
Mine is only a TO4e with a 0.60 on the comp side, but people have said it looks quite big, it was only 200 quid brand new so i cant complain. It has 1.10 ar on the hot side.
Once mine is mapped for 1 bar, i would like to get a power run on the rollers, who did you go to and where are they?
regards
tony
Mine is the GT35/40 (ball bearing), I think sideways Steve Cleary has a GT35.
Only just noticed that the snail in your engine bay is a supercharger!
The T04e is in your other black FD right? Gary still runs an FD with a T04e, does a very good job as well :)
Rolling roads that get mentioned quite a bit are:
G-Force, Aylesbury
CPL Racing, Sheerness
Abbey Motorsport, Oxted
I have gone to the first two, both use Dyno Dynamics rollers, Abbey use a Dynapack, which bolts onto the hubs.
Regards
Max
The gt35r and gt35/40 are both the same turbo, thats what i was told by universal turbos in ringwood,dorset/garrett dealer. Also this american company-The 35R is a 35/40 I wrote along winded version about how this came to be in another post. Garretts in house designation for the 35/40 is 35R. When I needed to order new parts for the 35/40\'s it was always cross-referenced with 35R part numbers.

Well, its coming along slowly......
The car now has a complete cosmo front end, subframe, shocks etc. This made mounting the engine a lot easier as it uses stock mounting points.
This is the new suspension turret, hand made to take the cosmo\'s bigger shocks.
the cosmo track is 15mm wider each side so even the stock wheels come right to the edge of the arches now.....
now we just have to sort out where all these wires go?????, we managed to fit the two stock FD oil coolers back which will hopefully be man enough for the job.
the fuel tank is in, this is now in the middle of the car so will allow for two silencers, one each side of the car...., you can see the two fuel pumps, just to make sure we have enough fuel, this is ali so is much lighter than the stock one.
Does anyone know if a cosmo has a gear box oil cooler, if so, how big is it, cos we have to find something to do the job as we dont have one, i have found the two pipes that come out of the gearbox which i am assuming go to an oil cooler of some kind.. .......... help please..
does anyone know when ten of the best is this year? we are aming for it to be running by then.......also how do we enter or book a place...
1st August, not sure about how you get entry i know the FDUK lot were trying to work out who\'d take their spaces as i recall....
Si
if I recall regs state that the car must have run under a certain time at a recognised raceway/event before 1st July but not sure what. check out this link: http://www.japmobiles.com/japukmeets/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2981 may be of use.
Nice project ... a lot of new ideas going on in that car :)
Are the brakes staying standard or are you going to try and refit the FD ones ? the Cosmo ones don\'t look too good in comparison.
brakes will hopefully be somekind of AP big kit with custom made bells and caliper brackets. the hubs are totally different than FD ones.
Yes the Cosmo does have a gearbox oil cooler its mounted below the o/s headlamp with its own air duct it looks to be about 10 x 14 inch but i cant say for sure without removing all the ducting and panels around it
thanks for that, got to find some where to fit an oil cooler now!!!!, running out of room now!!!
a lot of race/rally cars run oil coolers in the rear of the car with air ducted to them or even using an electric fan. might be an (extreme?) solution if you are short of space
we were thinking of running a flat coil of copper pipe towards the back of the car an back to the gearbox, its gonna be a case of suck it see, but if the stock car has a 10 x 14 cooler thats quite large
here ar few more, we are desperately trying to get this ready for TOTB. It now has an oil cooler for the gearbox attached to the front of the car. its not an optical illusion, the car is end on. It was easier to run the fuel pipes and the exhaust. We were hoping to get it running last weekend but it didnt happen, but not for the want of trying.
side on. with the exhaust which did not want to fit! not enough room for two 3 inch pipes. flow not as smooth as we would like but its sooo big it shouldnt matter.
just before you ask, the piece of wood is not holding the car up, just the exhaust, and the yellow drippy stuff is fixafoam behind the veilside side skirts. Just to give them some support should they get wacked!
I think you might have trouble with those mitred bends at the back, a short radius elbow would be miles better and should fit in the same space.
Looks f**king awsome, can\'t wait for a free weekend to come and have a look!
Is this a fun project or do you do things for others........sorry a bit away from the subject.
this is just a hobby, i dont mind doing bits and pieces, i could more but i dont want the responsibilty. I know what a headache the engine builders have. I am happy to make any one off custom bits and pieces and help out where i can. I made some bits for carlos and then he went a blew it up. Nothing to do with my heat shield though:D
If there is anything you think you might need pm me and i will let you know.
01245477911 il give dean a call then :P
not on that number you wont! that is a cossie tuner i know! and my name isnt dean
it would impliy that the number is of someone called dean lol thats what am on bout js havin a gigle :S
i know!:rollin
the number was written in the dirt to remind us to order the super charger belts from Dean as she is being fired up on saturday, all being well. Then its, MOT and mapping time. If its still working, then totb here were come.
i might jsut come down to t0tb but might be in rome :S what ecu are u runing and who is remaping it?
micro tec and not sure yet, not many people who can.
wow that thing looks rocking!!
You gonna post pics of it completed, love to see the engine bay and the complete pipe work for the charger?
yea, pipe work should be in friday, ready to start it on sat, as long as i\'m not too excited and forget to take the piccys.
Well, we finally got her started last night! it sounds awsome, it has a kind of sporty V8 sound with a deep rumple. It also revs exceptionally quick. Havent driven it but it holds the water temp down while stationary which was our main concern as the rad isnt as big as we would like but time and space is an issue. Many thanks to chris who slaved over a hot soldering iron ALL day on saturday sorting the wiringout. Its a chame we could nt connect my laptop to the microtech ecu, it would have been nice to check the sensors and modify the injector sizes, but geff will have to do that when he tunes it! Heres a few pictures of the complete engine bay except for the wiring loom which was tidied up after the photos! Lets hope its fast!!
there is a hell of a lot of home made aliminium bits in there! everything was custom made, even the strut brace.
anyone fancy doing any polishing?
That\'s one awsome car you have there! I\'d love to hear those 3 rotors roar!!
Oh and I\'ll polish yours if you\'ll polish mine ha ha! :rollin
well with fingers, toes and anything else you can think of, crossed, it will be at ten of the best! dont fancy it on the circuit part though, it will handle like a whale, none of the suspension will have been uprated, the front track is wider than the rear and we havent had time to fit the front anti roll bar!! shoud be done soon after though......... hopefully! i just hope there is a lot of run off! dont mind side swiping a few cones but walls are a little harder!
Is looking excellent:bandit can\'t wait to see it in the flesh:cool and to see what sort of times it\'ll get:D
Keep up the amazing work,
Paul:)
well its still underway, and still going slow and i dont think it will ready for rsII shame but these things take time.:o
i will post some pictures, basically its all running but the 650 bhp supercharger we have fitted will only create 10 psi of boost as this pig of an engine just uses too much air.
I dont think there is a part on the car that is standard anymore. Just in the process of squeezing calipers on the huge front discs, then it will go to re worx for some basic tuning.
It is also waiting for the custom made coil overs so we can get the ride height right, they had to be custom made as the front end is Cosmo and the rear stock FD.
oh and of course it needs painting
it should stop now cos it didnt with the stock cosmo front end, the thing nearly came to end before it begun;)
these are 19" wheels and they only just over the discs
TII discs cut down make the bells
BIG
there aint a lot of room in the engine bay anymore???
anyone want some polishing to do?
while we were waiting for the wheels and discs we had to do something:p
Its only there to balance the car at the back end...... honest
because none of the stock clocks would work with the new engine gearbox, fuel tank etc etc, they were binned and replaced with auto meter everything..........
last one..................
Mental!! :cool
I\'m really liking the work you\'ve put into the car - and worth it too!:D
Well done it looks great, theres a lot of custom parts on there.
(I take it thats dean shepards number then)
Does that mean your local to me Chelmsford?(Would love to have a look if you didn\'t mind)
Had the pleasure of seeing this for my self last week..........
The b*llocks......... :eek :god :god :god :bandit
Looking outstanding mate! Did you change the exhaust in the end? I remember a few months back there was some doubt over the efficiency of the custom job that was on there? (Having said that, with the amount of grunt thats gonna put out I doubt it would matter!)
Wow, a lot of time and effort has gone into that and I sure appreciate it :) Great eye candy and I can\'t wait to see/hear it running.
mate please have it running for RSII. I\'m sure everyone on here is desperate to see it running, I know I am.
Massive respect to your dedication and skill. Seriously impressed mate.
hooooooweeeeee
thats one mean looking bast**d son of a thing....
you should call it rexmo... souns about right
cant wait to see it the shows this year... when and where are you showing/running....
ooooh to have the money and time and understanding wife and cahoooonas
well done all involved...
Quote(I take it thats dean shepards number then)
yep, i\'ve known the shepherds (all of them) for many years. We have a little banter about how good cossie\'s are and how sh*t rx7s are until my FD was doing 12.5 1/4s, which is as good as their 4wd cossies, although they are still in the lead as their 4*4 escort Van (cosworth) has done a 11.8 run with nos now.
Its a target...........................
:D
That van is v.fast and set some good times, good luck, but with time should have them.
I cant take the credit for this beast, its my cousins car that we have both worked on, he is not a computer type person but give a piece of metal and he can do anything.
All the fabrication was done in his workshop. I am the engine builder and he is the parts fabricator............... and yes we both have understanding wives but the day job gets in the way, other wise the car would have been finished a long time ago.
Here is mine, waiting for its little microtec, heavily ported and rebuilt amoung other things.
here is last years project, great car, hope she is still going strong
That strut brace is increadible!!!
Well, all the custom parts are wicked.....great , great job, cant wait to see the finnished article!
Dan!!
wow. i never saw this when it was first posted. you got to let me come and have a look at this.
ill show you mine if you show me yours :rollin
this was a great buildup so far ... kudos to you! :D
i have 2 questions though:
1. did you keep the exhaust with those sharp bends in it?
2. are you planning to have the car weighed? i\'m just curious ...
I thought i would put a little update, a lot has happened since the last updates, including several rebuilds and ditching the supercharger for the big turbo thats now fitted,
The oil system has been seriously upgraded as has the chargecooler cooling system.
The car is now silver but was sprayed very badly indeed and may change colour again. Its been mapped to 7 psi and has just been put back together roughly today, see pics, its all very dirty and needs cleaning and polishing again but its just been put back in place to make sure everything fits, it will be pulled out again tomorrow and cleaned a little before we start running it in.
Also sorted all the bushes, braces, suspension and diff. A few custom body mods have also been done.
I will update once its been fully mapped.
Sorry for the poor pics, camera phone!
very well impressed with what you`ve done m8
look slike alot of time and effort went into it so far
it seems i have started 2 threads for this car and this thread is older than the other one,
here is the newer thread http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20343
WOW, ive just dribbled:Thumbs-up
that\'s some excellent workmanship :)
That looks awesome :D
Brilliant Fabrication, seen this at Reworx glad its running again, my only criticism but its my only my personal taste is the Three point Strut Brace it does not look as pretty as the rest of it, But Im sure Ant you can work your magic on that :)
well the car has been a bit neglected over the last year or so but we rebuilt (again) and had the turbo modified to try and get more boost this time, there a few other little changes like, the fuel system, rad/charge cooler but nothing major :o.
Had a few electrical gremlins which i got sorted with some help from Geff (thanks).
Here are a couple of vids, it sounds great in the flesh. Got to run it in again when the rest of the pipe work is fitted up and hopefully it should look like this again

very nice dude :)
Looks superb !!!!!
Real pleased to hear this project is still alive as I had heard rumors that it was so beset by engine problems and noise issues, so this is great news.
I really hope we see this dramatic labour of love at R6, well done guys :Santa
You never know, we might just be able to get it done for RS6 but there are a couple of other projects ongoing at the same time. A vauxhall VX220 with a Supercharged 13b REW in the back as a track car and a 20b NA (oldskool) in a 1st gen.
Anyone got a car trailer?
I dont want to start a war, but would the vauxhall and my kit car be able to run at RS6?
Labour of love is a perfect description, just glad its not my money thats paying for it.
looks like an awesome job you guys have done there.
im just a wee bit confused about the intake. Forgive my stupidity :D
the picture above was taken when it was supercharged, its now turbo charged.
The tank with the two air filters attached and \'3 rotor\' written on it attaches to the intake of the turbo
the dump valve on the far side of the charge cooler dumps back into the tank and on the supercharged system the wastegate regulated boost but that\'s not used any more.
This picture was before the last rebuild but it looks similar to this but there have been some changes, it just needs a good clean and polish
(http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i225/Antnicuk/tripletrbo1-1.jpg)
ah thanks for that :D
:god superb! Superb! SUPERB!
