hi guys, i picked up my rex on saturday after a long and aganising wait, and after 2 days it\'s completely dead.
i knew the guy that i bought it off and know he\'s never had any problems, hence why i went for it.
right.... i was driving it yesterday and the pipe on the top of the ast popped off that goes to the reservoir, reconnected it and tried refilling the coolant, without knowing the correct method (which i know now) and the "add coolant light and buzzer came on) continued to drive it home (about 20 miles) and on the way the car completely died. took about half an hour to restart it, and when it did finally go, i noticed that a plume of exhaust smoke was bellowing out from under the turbo.
drove it home, and as much as i could kept it off boost, just as i got into my street the car died again and filled the interior with exhaust fumes.
left it till this morning to have a proper look, i\'ve correctly refilled the coolant and tried starting her again, but no joy, the water pressure on stert forced one of the samco hoses off, so i refitted that and tightened the jubilee clip, went for another start and the car juct completely died, no electrics, no ignition, and no alarm.
when it was running it was idling hot at about 1800rpm, and the water temp on the fc commander was reading 133 degree\'s. completely at a loss now as don\'t know quite as much about these cars as i perhaps should.

col - i also know the title should read fd3s... stupid fat fingers!
You drove it for 20 miles with the buzzer on !!!!!!!!
Unfortunately it sounds like it needs a rebuild mate
Aww, mate, what a crappy unlucky start to FD ownership. Smoke from under the turbo can\'t be a good thing... Completely died with no electrics makes me think the battery\'s been shorted or main fuse gone- which might have happened if he insulation on a wire melted through- perfectly possible if smoke was coming out by the turbo! Exhaust gas is >900 degrees at the hot side of the turbo iirc...
If coolant was at 133 degrees it was steam, so providing no effetive heat exhange at all, I\'d be astonished if the engine hasn\'t cooked itself.
had some1 look at it that knows them like the back of his hand and unfortunately it looks like a complete water seal failure.
water coming from the turbo/exhaust manifold flange, and water out of the secondary plug holes with the plugs removed on start.
great start to fd ownership!
so if any1 knows of an fd engine going????
col
Yep, sounds like you cooked the engine. Driving while the buzzer goes off is a deadly game. The buzzer is there for a reason. Probably warped the plates and/or housings.
If you are very quick Carl has a running engine fitted for £1500, which is an absolute bargain.
Check the for sale posts on here or fduk

Bad luck mate, where are you based? Maybe someone can come and give their opinion.
I know of an fd engine for sale, iirc it is completely rebuilt and a spare block but I can find out for sure.
You can mail me on; freddy__k@hotmail.com
i\'m in swindon if anyone would like to come and give their opinion.
it would be very much appreciated!

Ooooo thats bad luck mate... 133 degrees!! as above it is likely that this has warped the plates too...
Am a bit confused as the mods list in your opening thread says "new internal water seals" so i\'d be asking some questions if it were me ??
133 degrees??!!! Were you not at all fazed by the water temperature needle pointing squarely at the H mark?
Some of that spec sounds quite nice. Shame you killed it already!

thats the thing mate it wasn\'t!
the 133 was read off of the fc commander, the other water temp guage was only reading about 80 degree\'s.

The stock water gauge is, well, ..... to be honest, the middle position means the temp could be anywhere from 50 to 115 degrees or so!!!
Or is there another temp gauge on the car somewhere?
Don\'t really matter now i guess, with the symptons you describe, deffo water seal failure, but my earlier post would still apply (i.e. the spec list shows the water seals have been replaced??!!?? :2Confused)

yeah i know, as i understand it it was either done by a company down south i.e bournemouth way might be rxmotors not sure, or by the previous owner.
not impressed either way though, so think it\'s gonna go to hayward rotary to be done properly this time, as the rats nest is still all in there as well as some shoddy blanked off pipework.
whatever happens it\'ll be sweet as a nut when it\'s finished and done properly

Don\'t feel too bad. read this on the DC2 forums lol
I did an oil change last week and had picked up a tip from a mate that involed starting the engine for 20-30 secs with the oil drained out as this would get any remaining old oil out of the engine.
It did work and some more oil dripped out of the sump.
Then I was reading the owners manual last night and it said that when the Oil Pressure light was on for 10 secs (which it obviously was), serious damage could occur
Is there any chance I could have damaged anything?
you read about this on a dc2 forum?
got a link?

:2Rolleyes as long as he\'d ported the head with the well established "sand blast through the intake" method, there probably wouldn\'t be any damage.

that story sounds suspiciously like the idiot in the States who was told to flush the engine on his Mustang by filling it with water and the cranking it!!!!
Water\'s incompressible so bye-bye valve train!!!
Why would you even THINK about cranking an engine with minimal/no oil in it?
makes me feel a little better, but still bummed out.
gonna miss half the summer what with saving and then waiting for it to be rebuilt! unless i can get that engine off of carl...?
