Title: Engine strip-down questions and pics.
Post by: carl0s on May 23, 2009, 08:24:24 PM
I\'ve just started dismantling the engine. You can see all the pics here.
I have some questions though:

Firstly, are these nuts/studs supposed to come out like this (ignore the long ones).
and what about those where the stud has been left in but the nut has come off? How do I get the stud out, as in this picture, where one of the studs has sheared half way down:

Is this heatshield expensive?:

Is this connector on the alternator supposed to be connected to anything? It wasn\'t on my car, and I bought the car as a non-runner:

Where\'s the wire that connects to this thing? And what is this thing? Is it an oil temp or pressure sensor?

There was a lot of stuff like this in the ports / manifold area. Anything to worry about? :

that\'s about it. Oh, and I broke something that one of the small hoses on the UIM comes from, but I can\'t find the picture. Instead of the rubber hose coming off the nipple, it snapped the plastic neck.

hey mate,
with regards to the studs (long ones too), i has the same happen to mine, just stick the studs in the vice with some soft jaws to protect the threads and use a spanner to remove the old lock nuts. i wouldnt personally re-use the old locking nuts, get new ones but dont use ny-locs as the nylon will melt under heat.
with regards to the snapped studs, soak them in wd40 overnight and first try to lock two nuts against each other on the threaded part of the stud to get it off, or try a big pair of grips, i tried these methods with no joy. if all else fails, buy yourself a stud extractor kit. it looks like a socket but works off an accentric so the more you undo the extractor the more it grips the stud. this method removed mine first time.
also, i didnt even have a heat shield on mine! and for the alternator, a cable bolts to the stud at the top and an electrical connector goes into the middle of it.
hope to be helpful, james

Thanks buddy! I appreciate your help. The alternator might have had something plugged in there, perhaps I disconnected it before I pulled the engine. It\'s just that it looked like that connector/socket was sort of hidden inside the engine, so I figured I couldn\'t possibly have unplugged anything from it while the engine was in the car..

Here is the one that I broke.. you can\'t see the actual broken thing in the picture because the flash wouldn\'t get into there, but where the straight hose with the green/white thing (third from left in pic) connects to, the nipple/neck has snapped off:

so your saying that the black 4mm vacuum hose that comes from the one way valve and goes off somewhere has snapped? or is it snapped where it connects to either a solenoid or the rack itself? can you trace which hose it is from this diagram:

I can\'t seem to tally it up to that picture, but basically the rubber hose off of that green/white one-way valve goes into a solenoid type thing (in that diagram, they all seem to go into further metal pipes.. this thing goes straight into a solenoid). The neck/nipple has snapped off the solenoid and come away with the rubber hose.

It could be the purge control valve.

I\'m close to removing the rest of the rat\'s nest, so I might be able to get a good picture of the solenoid in question shortly.
