Title: Failed MOT :(
Post by: GaseJo on May 23, 2009, 09:50:13 AM
Just went to get her MOT\'ed

Failed on a few things....

Side lights Blue bulbs not white!!
Frog eye lights No beam pattern!!
Would not bother me but gone through 2 previous MOT\'s with out comment on these.

Rear number plate lights one bulb not working!!

Does not sound to bad does it :)

Until you reach the EMISSIONS

Engine speed 2350 - 2650

CO        should be <0.30%              actual 7.48%
HC        should be <200 ppm           actual  476ppm
funny little sign :)     0.970 - 1.600  actual  0.802

Seconf fast idle test just as bad

Good news is natural idle test passed

CO         should be <50%                 actual 0.01%

So my question is.... Will the changing settings on the commander reduce the readings enough to get her to pass the retest???

Cheers Garith.

Was the MOT taken by a \'understanding\' garage? If they are nitpicking on the sidelights and other small bits then I think they will penalise you if you not perfect. I think it would be hard to get to the prop figures you need.

No to be honest he was very helpfull, He was not worried at all about the headlights but put them on the failure sheet just because it failed anyway because of the emissions.. & he has said when i go back for the retest i can do the commander settings to reduce the emissions before he switches on the sniffer, so basically do some dummy runs until he can adjust things his end to get it to pass.. But my concern is that the figures are so high that the commander thing might not reduce it enough. He kind of sid if i can get it down to about 1% then he can fiddle something to get it right..

wouldnt worry about it....

CO should be <0.30% actual 7.48% mine was 8.9 or so
HC should be <200 ppm actual 476ppm ~2500
funny little sign  0.970 - 1.600 actual 0.802 failed completely as i dont have a lambda (funny sign) sensor

and Pip got it to pass ;)

PS: make sure you have the right emissions test done, pre-93 cars don\'t need a cat and also only have to pass 3.5% CO and 1000ppm hydrocarbons

Mines a 1995 and has no cat! I assume that wont matter though as it passed last MOT and did not have one then either.

Sooooo,

Just got back from the MOT retest...

& well...

according to him there is no such things as a pre 95 import rule.... Unless

You just happen to have a letter from the manufacturers with the enigne number on stating that the car would not have passed the emissions test on date of first registration..

So did not even bother trying the PFC thing to try to get it down from 7.48 to 0.30

I\'m not very happy & not really any clue what i can do..

Garith..

Just looking through my paper work & when i first got the car & had to MOT it to register it in this country...guess what!!!!

Tested on a 3.5% co & 1200ppm which if i\'m not mistaken is the non cat test..  That was in 2006 so has the rules changed in 2 1/2 years or is this bloke being a right ....????

Rant over Garith.

As per FDUK, mate, the tester\'s talking utter toss! Yours should have the pre-cat test. Give him some grief, he\'s obviously a t0sser!

Thanks mate..  Not sure what to do really.. He had his little book out & i\'ve just been on mot uk testing website & read through the mot manual. It actually backs the bloke up but it does say there are flow charts that need to be used carefully to see what test the car should have but they do not show them on the website.. So still none the wiser..

Anyone else from southcoast maybe tell me where they get their\'s tested so i can find a friendly ;) MOT station....

Well, like Kevin said, I\'m sure the pre-cat test is for imports without a model report from before mid-1995. Certainly mine has always been MOT\'ed under those guidelines, though it\'s a \'93. I can\'t remember the exact thread, but there was one not so long ago where someone scanned the relevant passages from the MOT manual to prove it.

As for friendly MOT testers nearby, well I get Super 7 to put mine through at a local Truck and van station :3Confused who are a bit sympathetic about it :Giggle. I guess RE:Worx are a good bit nearer to you though, they must know of someone nearby who\'s tolerant of RX-7s ...er ..special needs :D

Yeah,, i had mine tuned at Re-worx a few weeks back & Max did mention somewhere in reading i think.. but cant remember because i did not think it would be a problem, as i still believe it should go on a non cat test which only needs to be tested on tick over & results of 3.5% & 1200ppm which mine achieved..

Someone mentioned super 7 to me on FDUK...

Yep... anything younger than 95 goes through as a non cat test ;) my MOT man told me this when I put the car through 2 years ago ;) also happens to be a mate, which helps alot with a fettled rex!

Thanks mate I used that to show him but he was still not interested.. He told me dont bother showing me something you found on the internet as he is the tester & knows what he is talking about... :) LOL

But as per my next post you can see he obviously does not know what he is talking about..

Cheers Garith..

A friend of mine did some detective work for me today  LOL

So straight from the horses mouth.. That horse being VOSA..

As per VOSA 14 Edition of the ISEE SFRV

Any RX-7 FD3S With the 4 - 9 digits of the vin Matching FD13B2 needs to have a CAT test

Anything other than these digits then it is a Non CAT Test

& The Non CAT test is on Natural Idle only (No Reving)

& As you all know it is co 3.5% & hc 1200ppm

So mine should have passed the Emissions test first time & no need for playing round with the Commander..

Now just neeed to get it booked in for yet ANOTHER MOT

Thanks for reading & hope this info helps oithers.....

Result! Glad you got it straightened out, i\'d take it back to the same garage and get them to test it correctly for free.

I think it would end up being more hassle to take it back to rub his face in it.. Just think how many little things he could find just to be a prat.. I\'m just going to report it to VOSA & leave it up to them to sort it out.. Hopefully i should get the fee back which would be a bonus..

Garith.

On a retest I\'m prety sure they can only check the points the car faild on initialy, or they are going to drop themselves in the .... with vosa for not picking up on them in the first place ;)

SSSSoooooooooooo,

Managed to get her booked in for a MOT & get time off work today (at long last) Took her to KWIK FIT ;) left her there at 12:00 by 1:20 i had a phone call.................

PASSED with out a hitch :) :) :) a couple of advisors which i will get to in a minute but How pleased am i. Years MOT straight to the post office for a years tax (well it would be rude not to for £125 :) )

Now the Advisories...

No 1.. The head lights a note of caution The Frog eye type are NOT road legal as they have no beam pattern, But seen as i have some lights coming hopefully Friday then he let it slide :)

No 2. I have some tein struts on the car & the front two have worn rubber bush... Does anyone know if these bushes are replacable or is it new struts i need :(

Cheers Garith..

did you manage to get your fee back from the other garage mate? seeing as he failed you twice for things that wouldn\'t fail normally?

Post by: GaseJo on June 10, 2009, 06:32:19 PM
Hi mate,

to be honest i have not even tried, The MOT tester today even told me i should report the other tester. But seen as the lights failed the first time then he could just say that it would have failed anyway even without the emissions.. So dont think there is much chance of getting the fee back.
