Title: Refurbishing standard twin turbos - changing the spec.
Post by: suba on May 19, 2009, 01:06:08 PM
Has anyone on here re-furbished the standard twins on an FD3 to a hybrid spec?  I\'m thinking slightly bigger compressor wheels to get them to flow a bit more air, but keeping the sequential setup and powerband?:Thumbsup!

I don\'t think it\'s cost effective compared to the cost of the BNR or Knightsport uprated turbos. Look here http://www.bnrturbos.com/3rdGen.htm (http://www.bnrturbos.com/3rdGen.htm)

i had a quote from turbo techics about 5 years back about doing what you`ve said. price was 1700 bucks plus the vat. 2k give or take. personally i`d just get the bnr3s. they`ve spent alot of time developing them.

Thanks for that - I would have thought 7-800 quid for a refurb and change of spec on the standard twins!  I may get in touch with CR turbos and ask them for a quote as I can get trade price with them.

Any idea how much boost the BNR3\'s can safely cope with and the approximate bhp they can flow?

Have you tried Super7Autos?

He mentioned once some porting type work can be done, to help flow, making them smoother and a bit more power!?

if i was you i would look at getting a second hand single turbo kit, would prob be cheaper depending on spec and would eliminate all the problems you will get with twins, the main issue is the rats nest which has around 50 pipes and lots of solenoids, if one pipe splits or kinks or a solenoid starts playing up you will get boost issues then you have to mess around trying to work out what is causing it.  So even after you have had your turbos rebuilt you may still get issues.

Interesting - so I might be better with a small single and 400bhp from something like a T04E , which would also generate less heat under the bonnet (the car is track day\'d).:Santa

Not everyone wants a single ;)

I need to figure out what I\'m going to do about my twins as the oil seals are weeping :(

I don\'t want to loose the setup I\'ve got though - more than enough power for my needs, and next to no lag. Utterly love it.

Singles aren\'t for everyone :)

i want the apexi rx6 turbo set up, next to no lag, about 350 at the wheels and no sodding rats nest. I love the twin set up but with the probs it causes i feel that a small single turbo is a much simpler solution, more reliable and generate less heat.
The only real loss is boost from lower revs, recently i\'ve really been paying attention to my driving and what revs i am using and it\'s only really from a standing start that i use lower than 3000 rpm. So a small single that is producing boost at 3000 rpm will be perfect for me.

Just a quick update on this - I\'ve been speaking to CR turbos about re-furbishing the twins.

As long as the turbine wheels are in good shape then they think that it should be fairly straightforward, and for a complete re-furb with 360 degree bearings + installing slightly larger compressor wheels would come to about a grand tops.

An extra 20-40 bhp should be available at low boost without changing the characteristics of the standard twins too much.

Anyone know what size compressor the stock twins have or tried slightly larger ones?

Eeeek, I was hoping it wouldn\'t be that much. BNR\'s/RF420\'s it is then...

As far as I know, they dont do new ones anymore, found this out when I was looking for some myself.
I\'ve got a 99spec car, and the turbos were improved slightly over std....and the aluminium Y defiantely helps. My power curve was steady and progressive, with no dip of power on the change over on the turbos.

I know Rixio on FDuk does the BNRs for around 2000 i think

£2000 is double the price of a re-furb and spec change though.....would be far cheaper and easier to shell out for a small single conversion taking into consideration going over 400bhp is so much easier...

I\'m sure that if the specs of the BNR\'s were known they could be replicated far cheaper.

Some of the prices for jap tuning parts are just silly money - the trust IC (not FMIC) that I have retails at £1500 - which is a joke.  I could get Pro Alloy to make up the same IC and pipes for a third of the price.:2Rolleyes

Just had a look - T70 turbo.  How big is that one + how would it spool?

My mate can get hold of a GREDDY TD06-25G turbo if you are interested.
This will spool nicely.
He can also get hold of other turbos and turbo kits, let me know if you are interested.

An update on this - I\'ve order a set of BNR turbos from the US, but I may still enquire about the cost to rebuild a standard set to a similar specification by CR turbos.

If this could be done for about £1500 on an exchange basis do we think there could be a fair amount of interest from people on here?:driving
