Title: New here. My FC arriving on Wed. Few questions...
Post by: StavFC on May 18, 2009, 02:57:04 PM
Hi, new here, having bought an FC from Japan a couple of months back, and its being delivered to me (hopefully!) Wednesday 9am, cant wait, always wanted an RX7, driven or been passenger in countless big power ones over the years, but never actually owned one till now.

Soon as it arrives im going to give it a full service (suitable engine oil/filter/plugs already ordered and will be collected today), but I have a couple of questions...

Gearbox and diff oil capacities, is it same as an FD, ie 2.5litre and 1.3litre, or?

2stroke and oil injection- Ive seen some RX7s with the oil injection setups removed, and as my FC is highly modded it may well have had this done. BUT as im new to RX ownership I wouldnt know what to look at in the bay to know if it has or not.
What am I looking at to check? And if so, how much 2stroke should I use? TBH I would prefer to use a bit of 2stroke anyhow as a safety measure, but I expect they need more with oil injection removed.
I can post an enginebay pic if need be.

Cheers :)

Pics as above, and dont worry about the rear end too much, been driving 400bhp+ RWDs for about 9yrs now, so well used to knowing where and when is safe to use the power! :)

And yes, its a highly tasteful and subtle sleeper, lol :D

Thanks all, glad you guys appreciate it, as it does indeed have a lot of special/rare parts on it, and it stands out, thats for sure :)

Here is a pure cut and paste of the spec, until I see it in the flesh I dont know any more...

ENGINE:

SUSPENSION / BRAKES / WHEELS / DRIVE

BODY / EXTERIOR:

INTERIOR

From what I understand, in 2006 this was its results...
3rd- Nikko TSUINDORI Tournament
4th- Grand Prix drift SUGO
5th- D1SL EAST
1st- ROTARY FESTIVAL
1st- Nikko TSUINDORI
2nd- MSC team drift event
5th- D1SL
1st- D1SL EAST
1st- Dunlop & FALKEN Drift Festival

I have a DVD at home from the round of D1SL where it came 5th, and qualified 1st.
Heres a lower quality video of some parts of the DVD...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bh8Wx1Uze68

Only real plans for the car is basic stuff, keeping the car as good condition as poss (while using it for what its made for, so that wont be cheap, but nor was the car!), and fitting water injection as an additional safety measure (well, as well as the NGK10\'s going in the minute it gets here, lol).
And of course, enjoy it!

oh its you... haha

Thats one very nice FC.

Chances are that with a uprated ECU they\'ve ditched the OMP and are running a pre-mix, i have no way of telling though. Probably best to at least put a bit of 2 stroke in till you know what its actually running.

Welcome :Thumbs-up

Yeah im presuming they are doing that, how much 2stroke do I add per litre when its been binned?
Also, where do I physically look in the bay to see if the oil injection/metering stuff has been binned? As im not even going to start it till its all serviced, so I should be able to spot it by then!

Sounds like the car has gone to a good home

"Dependant on setup.

No OMP - 150:1 any fully synthetic 2 stroke. The Millers KB2T is a good choice.

With OMP - 400:1 ie 100ml to 40lt fuel. Premixing in conjunction with the omp results in cleaner rotors and housings.

Be aware though, premixing lowers the effective octane rating of the fuel. You should be using the highest octane fuel available anyway, but with winter coming up it is more prudent anyway.

John"

Kalispera! Nice to see the mainstream performance car press finally showing rotaries the respect they deserve. Saw your FC pics in the mag this month and thought "at last" and it looks like a bit of a thing to be fair. Hopefully now you lot\'ll stop franchising Kandy sprayed abortions from the states with bloody awful Toyota lumps in them and look to some of the awesome home-grown talent in the UK!

Welcome to the club, though, matey :D

Out of interest, how do you go about finding a car like this for sale and then import it?

The oil metering pump is on the left hand side - near the bottom of the front of the engine - it bolts onto the front cover (The lower pulley set is in the centre of the front cover).  It has 4 plastic pipes attached to it, and 2 wires which connect to a pair of white electical connectors near the alternator.  I can see these connectors in one of your photo\'s so it looks like you may still have it connected.

Prof- Cheers for the info on the oil injection business, ill check soon as it arrives!

L18M- It wont have mega power, just a T04E on a ported engine, so 350-375 I reckon, in the D1 DVDs it says 350, but they usually put conservative numbers, so will be at least that.

Everyone- Cheers for the replies/info/etc etc, much appreciated :)

Another question for you...

It hasnt really been used in ages, not really at all in over a year barring the odd drive round the block once in a while to keep it fairly fresh, and the compression test just before I bought it.
I plan to give it a full service etc the moment I pull it out the crate, but I reckon, and correct me if im wrong, but the best bet would be change the oil and leave the brand new stock plugs in it for now, and drive it round pretty normally for a couple hundred miles, then change the oil again and put in the racing plugs, and then able to use it as normal (and by then I\'ll have fitted the water inj too, as an extra safety measure).
Im just a bit reluctant to just change the oil, pop in the racing plugs, and go for it from the off as its been sitting for a while. It will be fine on normal low/off boost use on stocko plugs wont it?
Opinions on that appreciated.

Nice car and remember seeing those pics some time ago when I was searching the net for rear spoiler pics. Really nice looking FC and will for certain have a crowd around it all the time. Its been in the drift scene for a while now so it will do her good to have a dam good service. With the ported engine and TO4E then 9\'s all round will be fine,they\'re cheap enough at the moment from Ebay. Look forward to seeing this at the shows and events.
Title: New here. My FC arriving on Wed. Few questions...
Post by: StavFC on May 19, 2009, 10:10:00 AM
Its not been on the drift scene for a long time, its just existed for a long time, lol.
It was built up and competed in 2006 only, and never used since, was put up for sale mid 07, and aside from a few trips round the block to keep it fresh, has sat in Kazama Auto and Powervehicles yards since :)

But yeah, ill be doing a full oil/plug change before even starting it, ill run it round for a bit on stock plugs and fairly gently for a couple hundred miles, then swap the plugs and oil once again, and go back to my usual driving, lol.
Regarding plugs, 9s all round may be ok in normal use, but Ross@Dragon reccomended 10s all round considering the use its going to get, so thats what I got, but they can go on once ive gave it a more gentle run back in to action. :)

That is a nice FC! I\'ve been waiting to see if you\'d pop up after reading about it in the mag.

What is the intended use (I guess lots of drifting?!), Do you have any plans for the future - adding an twin-turbo V8 perhaps ;) although that may get a few funny looks around here!
Title: New here. My FC arriving on Wed. Few questions...
Post by: StavFC on May 19, 2009, 01:42:15 PM
Intended use is fun, so yeah a lot of drifting as its main use, but just general fun, it will get a lot of miles on fast road, track, and even the odd bit of strip action I bet, I dont believe in cars that can only be good at one thing.

Future mods wont be much, the fact its like someone read my mind and built me an FC is exactly why I bought it.
Plans though...
Water injection for added safety.
A big cone filter, as its currently just an open turbo.
Some spare wheels, pink, of course!
Remove stereo, add perspex side windows and rear hatch, and ideally FRP or carbon doors, for minimal weight to improve all round performance and reduce stresses on mechanicals. Weighs slightly over 1150kg as it stands right now (Does anyone do these in the UK yet for FCs? They are available in Japan but cost a bomb).
Get it BDC/EDC legal- How close it is already I wont know till I take a look at the cage etc.
Power wise im hoping the current power plus planned weight loss should keep me happy- Im used to ridiculous power cars, so generally need around 400bhp per ton to keep me entertained/scared. Id rather not have to spend too much on power upgrades!

About the V8, well, you never know in the future, id only do it if it was the economical option after engine dying disasters, I love rotaries, and besides, this is NOT a project car, I want this car on the road the whole time, the Chaser is my project, and I hate having projects, lol.

i must advise you to stay away from piston engine tuners as rotary afrs at wot tend to be very different conventional motors

Got a call from the lorry driver who is dropping it off 2moro. He actually has it now and is only about an hour away, if I wanted I could have it this evening, but TBH im busy so it would do me no real good having it now, so the sheduled 9am drop off tomorrow will be going ahead as usual. Feels like Xmas, but less boring.

Dont worry, I dont trust tuners at the best of times, it wont be tuned by anyone but rotary specialists.
Ive known Ross@Dragon for many mannnny years now, so will be taking various trips to him no doubt.
Hopefully the current map and Optimax, along with w/i, should be safe. Hopefully...

To be fair, id wager its one of the best condition mechanically and chassis FC\'s in the UK, its ridiculously clean.

Its a shame the UK weather (ie wet) will no doubt ruin that, despite my best efforts.

As for a debut, it debuts whenever the car gets its UK plates.
I have MOT, and insurance, and even some Japanese plates on it, but if you are pulled driving an unregistered car I understand all of that is null and void and they\'d take it away like any untaxed car, so its got to stay where it is at the mo, which is frustrating.
