As an oil filter will only catch particles 20-30 microns or above, anything below this just circulates around the engine...which equals WEAR!..
For those who don\'t know Mazda in the 09 RX-8\'s (R3 for UK) re-introduced a Sump Pan magnet (inside the pan), which they last used in the FC RX-7 (same magnet). Mazda Part # F401-17-121.
I can only come to the conclusion that Metal Particles smaller than the thickness of your hair is doing damage to the RENESIS, otherwise why did Mazda re-introduce an internal sump magnet for 09\'s after an absence of 10 Years without one in ALL FD RX-7\'s and 04-08 RX-8\'s????
So I can recommend the following product...
http://www.shopfiltermag.com/ US Site..OR..
http://www.filtermag.co.uk/ UK Site/Supplier.
The SS250 Magnetic Filter to be exact....have a look at the site...you can purchase one direct or from a well known Auction site..
They are simple to install and reusable for life.
I have also order one so I can have double the Magnetic catching of metal Particles.
You can also use the STRONG Magnets that are used inside ANY old PC Hard drive, Pull one apart and you will see the two magnets inside, they are FLAT though, but should still hold on the oil filter\'s metal case.
FilterMag use Neodymium type magnets or some call them "Rare Earth Magnets".
DO NOT USE FRIDGE MAGNETS OF ANY KIND, ONE THEY COULD FALL OFF AND TWO THEY ARE NOT STRONG ENOUGH.
If cheap or weak magnet(s) fall off they will allow any caught metal particles to suddenly escape into your oil stream in one large hit...not good one would think.
I recently did an oil change & rang up my local garage RE:Worx to ask if it is worth installing a magnetic sump plug but they turned around & said that is pointless as the only metal particles that would be in your oil copper??
Im a big believer in magnets in the oil system.
I do a lot of oil changes about 50% with a sump plug magnet have metal sludge on them about the size of a marble.

Really, As my original post said, why did Mazda after 10 years add an internal sump Magnet to All 09 RX-8\'s (R3)?...
Ultra fine metal particles come off your Cast Iron side housings which can end up in the oil. Plus metal wearing off your two steel oil pump rotors and shaft, and from eccentric shaft journals.
I guess it one of those things that wouldn\'t do any harm by putting one in and could do some good :)

To be honest i agree with you, hence why i was looking into putting a magnet into the oil system some where but mearly rang up RE:Worx to ask about it & thats what they told me was very shocked whem they said that about it anyway gonna be seeing Chris who works there soon so i\'ll ask him again about it & see what he has to say about it.
Mazda parts showing Inner Sump Magnet for those who are non believers..

I also have one of these in my FD and every oil change I notice a small marble sized piece of gunk, surely it must be a good thing if the magent is catching it?
Thanks for the info :cheers
Sounds like it wouldnt do any harm. Any idea what one you would need for an FD?

Good advise, I can see a lot of us doing this with our FDs, group buy?! ;)

Sounds a good plan to me ... in fact group buy fd\'s and \'8s

Ive never been keen on this because all the small metalic particles which stick to the magnet would in turn become magnetic too. So when your next running high revs and the oil pump is at full chat, go over a bump and release a lump of magnetic swarf to stick and stay in the engine, and wont come out when you drain the oil next. How about letting the car tick over with a magnet on the filter for five minutes before the oil change, best of both worlds?. This with regular changes would be your best bet?:wiggle
Paul.
anyone know which one would be suitable for the FD?
If there is this risk then why would Mazda run them on the RX-8?

The SS250 will do if you are after the Filtermag OIL FILTER Magnet.
One point about the comment of the magnetic particles moving if you go over a bump, I can assure you the magnet is so strong it does not move at all as it has 75 LBS OF MAGNETIC PULL FORCE or 34 kilo\'s.
You leave the SS250 attached to your oil filter when renewing your Oil Filter.
Once the old oil filter is removed you take off the magnet and install on the new filter.
Just a point also...
Please Comprehend my Original Post...
So far we have covered 3 different types of oil magnets, they are Not the same devices, but do a similar job.
The internal one Mazda uses in the engine sump pan is NOT REMOVABLE.
The Sump DRAIN Plug Magnet is another removable solution.
And The OIL FILTER Magnet is also removable and reusable.
NOTE: Mazda uses the same magnet (# F401-17-121) in their Auto Transmissions (Mazda 2,3,6)

The idea is to collect the metal particles as they form and move around your engine, leaving the mag-filter on for 5 minutes when changing your oil filter is not really using the magnet to it\'s full potential.
So you would have metal floating around your engine for a year or more before you changed your filter.
I have a magnetic sump bolt in my classic mini, you do get a lot of rubbish in the oil lol well worth it for a high performance engine
I just received my SS250 FilterMag Today in the Post...only 7 days from the USA guys...pretty good.
Anyway, I will install magnet over this weekend, so it will get use for 2000 KMS (1200 Miles) until my 10,000 KM (6,000 Miles) Service with Oil Filter renewal.
I tried the SS250 on a new Oil Filter I have in my stock, it clamps on really well and holds tight.
I hope I have enough clearance with the SS250 on my cars Oil Filter Body, I have the 09 Series II RX-8 with the 180 degree (approx) alloy flange that is in the way, I may have to shave or cut some of the Black Plastic Frame that holds the 8 magnets together.
Will let you know the outcome...
Series I (04-08) RX-8 owners (any other RX Models in fact) will have NO trouble in clicking on the SS250 Oil Filter Magnet...easy as cleaning your teeth!

i use one of those and it does catch some bits, makes you wonder......
Speaking to our Toyota guy at work who looks after all the trucks. Asked him what he thought and said very good idea these trucks each have 4 strong magnets in the oil systems...
The Filtermag SS250 fits perfectly on the new designed oil filter in all 2009~ RX-8\'s and R3\'s, I have about another 1000km before I do an oil and filter change, I hope to post a picture of the results...

Ordered a SS250 yesturday from Blue Diamond Endineering arrived today while i was at work. They look sweet and took 30 seconds to install. i Can Highly recomend the service i got from them.
looking in the Filtermag website it seams that they can be used on fule filters also, has anybody tried this?
How Ironic..I changed my oil filter yesterday after having the SS250 on for 1000 Miles.
Here are the results, and remember my 09 has a Factory Sump Magnet, Series I RX-8\'s have NO magnet...
What is said is all true, not that I doubted the manufacturer.
In my case I had to remove the magnet to remove the oil filter as it is in a different position on 09\'s, so some of the metal moved, but you can see ALL the ultra fine metal picked up by magnet.
When you wipe off the metal it is like ultra fine black tooth paste!.
Brilliant!!!
Hmm looks Nasty!!! i take it the outline of the magnets on the inside of the filter can has been made from metal filings and stuff collected by the magnets?
Glad i got mine now.
Yep, I would have put it on sooner if I knew about them when I bought my car in November.
bought and fitted mine about 4 months back now.
now does anybody know if the magnetic sump plug from the new R3 engone will fit the 1st gen 8 engines?
Sorry for the late reply.
The Series II RX-8 (R3) does not have a standard "Factory" Magnetic Sump Plug (Drain), Yes they have changed though, the sump plug is a recessed type (flat) and uses an 8mm HEX Key or Allan Key to remove it. The drain Plugs are totally different between the two series RX-8\'s.
The Series II does have a Magnet located inside the sump pan which is installed by the factory, the Series I does not...another reason why I highly recommend some form of magnetic catcher for metallic engine debris.
well i have already installed my SS250 several months back so i guess now its a case of an after market plug.
Yep, it will help
