Title: Picking up an FD with 55k on.
Post by: ramirez on May 12, 2009, 11:29:23 PM
Hi guys,

I\'ve found a cheap FD (circa £2000) which is on its stock engine, with 55,000 miles on. I know it will need rebuilding soon, which is why i\'ve gone for it really.

I would like to attempt to give the rebuild a go myself, ideally before it goes bang.

This probably gets asked all the time, but whats the best reading material for doing this kind of work? Any DVD\'s / manuals?

I should be ok sourcing parts as I work within 2 minutes of Lindop Bro\'s in Queensferry and live not far from Northwich for WGT. I\'m not a newbie to RX7\'s, i\'ve had an EGI and Turbo II but this FD seemed like a very good deal for one which is in decent condition.

TBH with FD\'s I\'d forget the condition of the engine, look at the overall condition of the car.  A good FD body/suspension wise is now hard to find...

A lad local to me just picked up a T reg (1999) with 39,000KM (not miles!) on it for £1995.

It needs some work but nothing too major and it\'s running!

I\'d be getting a compression test on that straight away, as that sounds tooooo good to be true :o

thats a good price, even with a rebuild you wont lose anything ! compresion test it before pulling it out just to give you a idea of the engines health but its going to be alot cheaper if you rebuild it before tip faliure(i learnt the hard way :()  .atkins rotary .com  for your rebuild d.v.d

right guys, good news and bad news!

Good news :

Car is in generally good nick, nice body, respray, lowered suspension. Custom exhaust etc.

On the road it drove pretty good

Bad news :

1) Had a compression test done just a moment ago at Lindop Bros.

Results were :

Rear rotor

7.5
7.3
7.5

Front rotor:

Predicted a chipped seal, the machine said "9.5, 0, 0"

The idle is a little shakey, car still starts fine and does run ok though.

Any thoughts? This hasn\'t in anyway demotivated me, I had expected that the engine would not be perfect.

All depends really what that "chipped" tip has done to the housing and/or rotor to be honest which you wont know til you pull it apart...

But if it\'s a good shell, it\'s still a good price as others have said

Was it the white one from Brum? That supposedly just needed a new fuel pump? :D

Almost bought that myself just to learn how to build engines :D

use the info to get a better price, you wanted a rebuild project anyway, could be a good negotiation point and if its been up for 8 months he might just want rid.

8 months eh, didn\'t realise it\'d been there that long!

I\'m undeterred. I don\'t think this\'ll be a quick rebuild by any stretch of the imagination so I must remain positive :)

Be a good learning experience though i#\'m sure! I\'ve got a scoob to use meantime

Yeah I looked at that car on Ebay and Pistonheads. Even contacted the seller askin about the engine as he first advertised it as needing work. Then the advert was changed with no mention about the engine having a problem. Glad to see your back in a RX7 though bud. You\'ll have to bring it out to some meets.

hi mate....yep i hope to do so, maybe not in its current state but certainly when fixed :)  thats interesting though what you\'ve said, i\'d be a bit cheesed off if he was aware of engine issues and didn\'t disclose them..... don\'t suppose you kept any correspondance did you?

maybe i\'m a bit too trusting but he was pretty clear that the engine had been running fine for past year and half. well, the advert as well said as much.

my mate has an engine crane so i\'m expecting removing the engine to not be too big a deal.

meantime, will i be doing any extra damage continuing to drive the car as it is? since i got the test i done i\'ve been a bit concerned. no issues starting though, slightly rough idle.

i\'m afraid not mate. He did reply to me originally when he was based in Carlisle. But when I saw it re-advertised with the revised advert I got no reply once I mentioned the engine problem. He had however added the bit of the ad directing people to the youtube video of the car.
For the price I think it\'ll be a good car. Just a shame you have to rebuild it sooner rather than later thats all.

Ah well, live and learn i guess :) yeah he\'s a student up in Carlisle. Naughty of him to not disclose the probs I think.

Yep ultimately the way I see it is that i\'ve not spent massive money on a car with an engine on its way out. It\'s a nice colour, low overall miles despite the engine and will be a good project for me.
