Hi guys. Can someone give me a quick rundown of the best/easiest way to pull the engine out? I have the service manuals, and that says to remove the transmission first. I want to know if I need to follow the service manual to the book or if there\'s an easier way, bearing in mind it will be on my driveway.
thanks,
Carl
No, leave the transmission in the car when removing the engine.
Remove all ancillaries, and bits and bobs. Undo the necassary bolts and undo the clutch from the flywheel. Then unbolt the two nuts for the engine mounts. With an engine crane attached to the engine jack it up a bit. Then put a jack under the gearbox and support that. Keep doing this until the gearbox is touching the top of the transmission tunnel. Ensure the gearbox is fully supported by the jack, and now you can remove the engine. Once the engine is removed, let the jack down and chock the gearbox with a bit of wood between the gearbox and the engine sub-frame.
Thank you very much, that sounds like just what I was after.
I see a lot of people are pulling the main wiring harness with the engine. Is it necessary for me to do this? I\'d rather just leave as much alone as possible.
thanks
It\'s not necessary....but makes life a lot easier if you pull it through into the engine bay.

OK. So that would mean I just lift out the whole engine with all the wires still attached? I can see how that would make it easier.. cool. I\'ll do that then.
Yep, that\'s it
Any chance of a little more help with regard to the "ancillaries and bits and bobs" part ?
Here\'s where I\'m up to so far:

Do I remove the throttle body or whatever that is that I\'ve marked as A next, and then the manifold which I\'ve marked as B ?
Any other tips ? I\'m finding myself unplugging plugs from sensors and things and then wondering if I am doing the wrong thing, especially as the loom is going to be coming out with the engine..
thanks very much,
Carl
No, you need the Upper inlet on as this has the engine "hook" on it.
From the photo it looks like you still need to do the following:-
Remove the brake servo pipe
remove the oil lines
remove the water hoses
remove the power steering (i\'ve always found removing the whole bracket easier rather than the pipes as it gets messy otherwise)
boost sensor pipe
The engine wiring harness you need to pull through is below the ABS unit and goes into the passenger footwell. You\'ll need to disconnect the ECU (you\'ll see what\'s in the loom) and then push it through (you wont really be able to pull it out properly until you start to lift the engine, just be careful
Just make sure everything is disconnected and make notes where necessary and be carefull when lifting, you\'ll soon notice if somethings connected
Have a look at my strip down thread mate, did it over christmas and may help you :)

Thanks very much. I\'m going to look at your thread now. What\'s the upper inlet? Is that the thing I\'ve marked as A ?
a = throttlebody
B= uim
Ah, interesting. I just looked at your photos. So the engine comes out with turbos, manifold etc. still attached. I was thinking my next job was to take the turbos and manifold off from inside the engine bay..
I guess I have to unbolt the first CAT or downpipe or whatever from under the car then.
I could also do with knowing easiest/best way to drain fluids. Can you tell I\'m an amateur? :-)

OK I get that now.. upper inlet manifold, so I was half-way there ;)
thanks.
There\'s a drain plug on the bottom of the radiator to remove the coolant. There is also a bolt in the centre plate to completely drain the block underneath the spark plugs and would recommend doing this...
Oil i assume you\'re ok with?
You will need to remove the downpipe yes b4 taking the engine out, for this you\'ll also prob need to disconnect and move out the way the steering rod link... I had to

Yep no problem with the oil. I do routine maintenance on the Supra so I can drain oil, just never done coolant before and not sure about drain plugs on engine block, but I know they\'re there somewhere. OK. I\'m probably asking far more questions than I need do and should probably just have a go. I\'m just trying to build my confidence beforehand :)
Thanks for your help. I did a bit tonight and might have a proper bash at the weekend unless it\'s nice and sunny tomorrow evening.
Gonna be sunny all day tomorrow matey lol :D
No worries, all here to help, and all had to start somewhere too :)
And don\'t forget to undo the oil lines to the oil rad. There are little metal circlip type things that lock the lines to the lines on the engine - these just pry out, and then the hoses and be pulled apart. Don\'t lose the circlips! (And catch the oil too!)
