Title: Where to look for rust?
Post by: carl0s on May 09, 2009, 10:01:19 AM
Are there any points in particular where I should look for rust / chassis corrosion on these cars?

Anything else I should look for when buying a car, other than that the engine/turbos work as they should?

thanks,
Carl

The places i have seen Rust in order of severity

Leading edge of the sunroof (open the roof and look at mating edge of the roof skin)

Rear Arches (usually stone chips on the lips that have gone rusty)

Sill to floor pan seam (you have to raise the car then look at the inner egde of the floor where it meets the sill)

Sill seam (just under the back edge of the door there is a seam where the sill joins the quarter, that tends to rust)

Quarter seam (open the door and look at the seam where the Quarter meets the door shut)

I have also experianced some rusting on the underside but not too bad proberly due to the amount of oil there is usually all over the front of the floor :),

Have a good look round the leading edge of the rear wheel wells (i\'ve never welded one up there but there always corroded)

The two box sections that run under the foot wells, (not all go there but it has been known).

Understand i only really see the worst cases, and most of the cars i have repaired have been UK cars.
