i still have a long list of parts i want to get which includes:
single turbo conversion
new wheels
a few c/f goodies
polishing a few engine bits
and a few small bits and pieces
but unfortunately im strapped for cash at the moment
anyways let me know what you guys think and all comments/suggestions welcome.
nice bro i want to go single aswell as soon as my twins blow up ill get it also i dont no if its me but i prefer the 92 fd bumper to the 99spec but thats just me i am half blind anyway lol
Yeah, I agree on the 99 spec nose. Just did not like the molded in license plate bracket. So I stuck with the original nose. Nice car though, it is interesting when taking pictures from the front of how low and widt the cars look. Amazing.
im liking it. 99 spec nose all the way! all you need is a 99 spec rear wing and you got it sorted:Thumbsup!
Really great looking FD, love the gauges!
very nice looking good! :Thumbs-up
thanks guys
theres still more to come eventually.
im not sure about the 99 spec spoiler i like the way the old shape one curves with the back of the ca. that said i do like the 99 spec ones too but cant decide
holy thread revival batman. but seriously ive been busy on the car since this update so here comes another one.
right since the last update there has been some movement. the engine went bang last summer due to detonation and im still trying to sort this. time and money havnt really been the problem as such more luck. ive gotten a few parts that just were not what i was looking for. eg i got a clutch master cylinder in the states. i asked for a new one and i got a second hand one. seriously ....ed off with that one still. this rebuild has been nothing but bad luck really however ive been soldiering on and trying my hardest to get the car back on the road.
the engine went bang despite me taking a good few precautions. before it went bang it was running like a dream and never missed a beat. it went bang about 5 miles down the road one morning after i filled up with petrol so ive a funny feeling i got some dodgy petrol but proving that and then trying to get compensation especially this far on would be next to impossible.
a few months before engine went bang i got my work 3 piece wheels reconditioned. lips polished and centers sprayed a gun metal greyish colour.
i was well pleased with the way they came out and as i got it done as part of a group buy i saved some money too.

before the engine went bang i bought these for the car.
had some issues, the exhaust wouldnt fit so had to cut out a small section that stuck up so it sits better.
as it sits now the diffuser is very low on the drivers side so i may have to fabricate a bracket to help raise it up a bit. as you can see from the above image its far too low.
the engine went while these were in transit to me so i fitted them to the car to keep my moral up. i was contemplating selling it but i just could justify selling after all the work and money from the last rebuild.
once i decided to rebuild the engine again i bought an atkins rotary master rebuild kit to begin with while i waited to hear back if the housings or anything were damaged.
i decided to buy a water injection kit to help eliminate detonation.
its an aquamist hsf-3 kit iirc.
next up was a converter for the omp to run a seperate 2 stroke injection system.
i also bought this 1 ltr oil catch can as a storage container for the 2 stroke injection.
next was to fit the previously purchased feed style slim carbon fibre side skirts.
after a bit of a mix up with delivery from the source company and about 2 weeks later i got my carbon vortex generators. i fitted them the next day.
after a bit of inspecting i found my clutch plate was knackered so i bought a replacement clutch disc which wasnt too badly price i might add. i got lucky as i didnt need to replace the whole clutch unit.
the leaky old master cylinder might be to blame for the above.
i bought a new higher speed air temp sensor. this was cheap too and as it was recommended i said id pick it up.
after we stripped the engine we noticed i needed a replacement rotor.
the old one was damaged but the apex seal only split into 3 pieces, two large bits that stayed in the apex groove in the rotor and one very small bit that has gotten somewhere.

engine after disassembly
(http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt330/bernardcon/my%20car/2011-01-29122615.jpg)
main engine block
(http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt330/bernardcon/my%20car/2011-01-29133847.jpg)
we inspected the rest of the engine further and everything seems to be ok to re use so i dodged a bullet there. the turbos have no damage so where the tiny piece got too i will never know. im seriously thinking im haunted because the tiny bit must have gone through the engine, out the turbo and not hit anything.
next purchase was these
burnout rear arches, used but workable. i must say they do look nicer than the pictures ive seen. the curve and straight side isnt as sharp as i thought it would be.
shine auto 3 piece adjustable front undertray. should fit the 99 spec bumper and splitter perfectly but if not only small trimmings will be needed. should look good when fitted.
they havnt been fitted yet but will do as soon as its back.
the next thing was we gave all the engine a damn good clean and got everything ready for the rebuild. however upon cleaning the 3rd replacement rotor we inspected the tolerances between the apex seal and the rotor and they are too large. so im still trying to sort out a 4th replacement rotor with the guy i purchased the last rotor off. despite buying numerous rotors i havnt taken too big a hit to justify getting a new one but i am tempted. unfortunately it would mean a big hit on my finances.
to keep myself sane and as i have them off the car with the rebuild i decided to tackle my intake piping, manifold and intercooler. ive been wanting to spray these for some time now to match the colour of the wheels. so out came the rattle cans.
i got started by stripping bits off of the parts and giving them a damn good clean.
i started to file down the welds on one of the pipes to try and make it look a bit better. im not too worried about how it looks tbh as it hits the bonnet so im gonna replace it at a later date but i still dont want massive welds on it either.
heres a pic of how it looked
(http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt330/bernardcon/my%20car/2011-04-14194314.jpg)
after that i gave the parts two coats of primer
(http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt330/bernardcon/my%20car/2011-04-14194259.jpg)

if you look closely you can see i filed down the massive casting mark on the side of the manifold
(http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt330/bernardcon/my%20car/2011-04-14194224.jpg)
its still visable but .... it my hands were destroyed. wish i had a grinder.
i gave my samco piping a good clean and they look like new again :)
if you look closely on the curved pipe you can still see the welds i filed down but they are alot less noticeable so im happy. still that pipe will be replaced later on.
heres what it will look like with the red samco hosing
(http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt330/bernardcon/my%20car/2011-04-15173901.jpg)
i chose Peugeot steel grey to spray the parts with.
heres a few pics with clear coat and masking tape removed. also fitted any pipes and parts that had to be removed.

i went to halfords to try and get more paint to finish the intake. anyway long story short they didnt have it. it would be over a week before id have the correct colour paint. so i trawled through the paint isle and found ford mercury grey which looked very similar. so i bought it and went about spraying.
i got the intake manifold and throttle body finished and i gave the intercooler a very light few coats of colour and one coat of clear to protect the finish. all in all the intercooler has a very thin layer of paint as i didnt use primer.
the colour isnt a proper match but it is close enough.

how the mani looks around the filled down cast marks. its not obvious but you can still see the marks.

lastly a few pics of the old colour and the new colour side by side. the pics show it a bit more clearly, to the eye its not as obvious but the new colour is lighter looking.

as i said to the eye its not as obvious as it is in the pics and whens its under the bonnet it will be hard to tell even while looking at the engine.
lastly i took these pics of the sprayed parts today while they wait to go back on. heres what they will look like all together and a very quick photoshop to show you what the engine bay may look like when the rebuilds done and all goes back in.

sorry for the very long post but alot has happened since i updated this thread.
lastly i hope this whole thing makes sense as i copied and pasted most of it from a different forum.
comments welcome.
future plans are:
finish the rebuild
buy burnout front arches
respray the car
new 18 inch wheels to fill the arches
mapping after the engines run in
i may pick up soon a 99 spec rear wing that i can get on the cheap but i have to wait to see about the replacement rotor first.
other smaller plans are some diy bits. im planning on polishing a few bits under the engine that didnt get paint eg the alternator.
doing an led mod for the back of the instrument cluster as the redish orange colour dosent match the white defi gauges so im gonna try and modify them to glow bright white.
99 spec rear light conversion is planned too.
some of these may take me a while to save up for but they are the plan for now.
Wow... Some hard work, hard earned money invested and what a result. That is what they call the dogs fdukin ........! You must be pleased with it, I bed it will drive like a dream and it really looks good. Great work mate!
I am glad to see people like you are now a days, when the engine pops on an FD, it normally straight goes to breakers yard. We need people like you to keep FDs running the Show. Great work there mate, and nice looking FD..
Good Luck
Syed
thanks guys.
ive had this car now over 4 years and its slowly getting to where i want it. however with it taking 4 years other factors often pop up that need to be addressed and that eats into the mods budget. for example the paint on the car atm is in a dire state. it needs a full respray and theres no getting away from it as some of the paint has started to peal off.
im pretty sure the car got a cheap respray before it was put up on the jap auctions and now im paying for it.
i hope i can afford to keep this car for a very long time as i dont see myself driving anything else haha.
ill try and keep this thread updated with more bits as the car progresses. hopefully there will be a good few updates over the summer if all things go well.
mini update part 1
was out with the car today while im waiting on my rotor to get here (hopefully next week).
arrived out and i must admit the car was in a sorry state and looked a mess.
the grass had grown up around the car
(http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt330/bernardcon/my%20car/2011-05-19123045.jpg)
nom nom nom tasty grass, i think my rx7 may be a vegetarian :D:D:D
(http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt330/bernardcon/my%20car/2011-05-19122948.jpg)
so first job was to remove the car from the meadow that had built up. we pulled it out and fiachra set about cutting the grass while i had a look over the car. after an inspection the paint is worse than i thought it was.
so im looking into getting some sort of loan to pay for a full respray. will have to sort something out.
the inside had a load of small bits of hey and grass that had gotten into it somehow. also under the bonnet and rear door hatch was some. a damn good clean of the interior will be needed before i put it back on the road.
at this point i felt a little upset, to see my pride and joy in such a bad state even after all the hard work and money gone into it. i popped the bonnet to get started on another job and seeing no engine in the bay which i knew wasnt there but it still really hit home to me. the car really is in a bad state atm and it really upset me. after a few mins feeling like .... i copped the .... on got to the work i went out to do. after thinking about it i realised it needed a spray anyway so its not too bad, the interior will just need a days cleaning and freshing up and it will be like new again. the engine is a work in progress and with the extra mods coming should run sweeter and safer than ever.
anyway i removed the rear lights so i could do a 99 spec conversion on them over the next few days.
next was the engine bay. i removed some parts that i could easily and moved some around that could but couldnt remove. bay before i started.
i proceeded to do this.
i then took a short break and then finished the main part of the masking of the engine bay. next i gave it a good clean in preperation for whats happening hopefully tomorrow.
tomorrows plans are to finish cleaning and then mask the underneath of the bonnet, the windscreen and window tray, the wings and front slam panel.
then its a few coats of primer and a few coats of paint and laquer to freshen the bay up in time to receive the new engine with all the painted and soon to be polished goodies when i get my polishing kit :cool:
despite initially feeling ....ty im happy with the days progress and after tomorrow i should be well pleased.
hopefully next week will see the arrival of my rotor and it will be fine fingers crossed and we can finally get started on the long overdue final assembly.
part 2
BAM
a few hours later and these were born
(http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt330/bernardcon/my%20car/2011-05-19215609.jpg)
btw the stuff on the bottom right that looks like dirt is actually the reflection of my bed clothes lol. now thats shine.
this is a better picture to show you the arrangement of the circles.
2x80 mill circles for the lights and brake lights and a 75 mill circle for the indicator. i arranged them by eye and i must say they actually came damn close to a guideline template that was in the how to i used. im bang on in a few spots and the rest are only 1 to 2 mill out.
well pleased with them and they should be on the car tomorrow. only problem is there is no battery in the car atm so wont be able to see what they look like lit up just yet :(
hopefully the weather holds up tomorrow and ill get started on spraying the engine bay and refitting the rear lights
todays update
first up today i put back on the 99 spec lights
(http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt330/bernardcon/my%20car/2011-05-20120939.jpg)
masked up the rest of the car
(http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt330/bernardcon/my%20car/2011-05-20115658.jpg)
got some primer on
(http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt330/bernardcon/my%20car/2011-05-20120900.jpg)
next up was 2 coats of black
(http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt330/bernardcon/my%20car/2011-05-20123242.jpg)
then came 2 coats of clear
(http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt330/bernardcon/my%20car/2011-05-20130948.jpg)
finished with all masking removed and parts put back
(http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt330/bernardcon/my%20car/2011-05-20141949.jpg)
the area on the left thats still red wont be seen and would have been a pain in the hole to mask so i just left it.
looks good in the flesh but there are a couple of small areas that need some touch ups from where the paint couldnt get for one reason or another.
under the weather strip is a very thin layer of red still visible as seen here
(http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt330/bernardcon/my%20car/2011-05-20134709.jpg)
ill touch all these up another day.
before leaving today i took this pic
(http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt330/bernardcon/my%20car/2011-05-20142224.jpg)
for some reason i kinda like it haha
Looking good - keep up the good work :Thumbs-up
Keep up the good work man, getting through all the hard times will be worth it when you get it going again:driving

started today with a check of the rotors to see if all the seals we installed were still correct.
next up was a quick rinse of the main engine parts to get any last bit of dust or dirt that may have gotten on since our last day.
next was to sort out a few of the seals.

all bolted up and torqued to mazda spec. we checked if the rotors moved freely and they did. then we checked the horizontal movement of the shaft to see how much play was there and everything was within tolerances.
last thing we did was install the oil pump assembly, oil pressure reg, oil pick up. would have had the sump on too but ran out of sealant.

Comming along nicely mate, keep at it deffinatly going to be worth the wait
may i ask where u got your battery box from? i have the same one but my mate wants to get one too
i got a kit from rhdjapan as i had some credits left and with the good conversion rates a few years back it worked out very cheap.
unfortunately the conversion rates are gone and i think they dont do credits anymore.
bit of a delay in posting this here but better late than never.
just under 2 weeks ago this happened.

ITS ALIVE
well fiachra really did do alot of work over the last week or so and got the engine in, running and all setup. he installed the 2 stroke injection system and started fitting the water injection. he also adjusted the diffuser so it sits properly now and not just by cable ties for test fitting.
heres a vid of the idle.

i did clean the paste off from between the roof and boot lid after i saw it in this pic.
car still needs a respray but its looking soooooooo much better.
wheels need a good clean and polish so may do that over the next few days.
i also sorted out some help for the car to get into the drive.
works like a charm.
great car mate.. I want it too your intercooler kit of Rx7Store :) how do you think? which temperatures detect in Air Intake on Power FC?
tell me in terms of the open road or in city traffic please :)
holy crap ive let this slide lol.
right since my last post ive done the periodic oil and filter change.
ive raised the coilovers to get the car through the nct (irish mot).
i tied back the wheel arch liners which were rubbing on the tyre on full lock.
i temporarily put in the exhaust bung for the nct.
tidied up some wires for the water injection in prep for the test.
so i put the car through the nct and it failed on the headlight allignment which i was kinda expecting as i only did it on my drive against the wall.
while i was waiting for the nct retest i got the headlights adjusted properly but the ast sprung a leak. i think the first tester leant on the bracket holding the ast and bent it slightly towards the pulley and it rubbed. it was only a very small hole but was leaking none the less. i got some metal epoxy and filled the hole and its been a few weeks now with no leaks or problems so sorted atm until i learn to weld and ill sort it properly then. im hoping to learn basic welding over the winter.
so the car went in for the retest and passed so im now fully legally allowed to be on the road lol.
since its passed i took off the exhaust bung as it made the car too quite for me.
since then there wasnt too much as work done as weather has been crap and ive had very little time and money.
however this weekend i got some work done.
ive been meaning to try fix the fubbered tacho on my car. basically the problem is the needle would bounce all over the place and sometimes stay at 0 or random figures. had the needle sitting at 9k rpm at one stage with the ignition off and key out.
so first thing first was to take out the instrument cluster which was easier than i expected.
after it was out i removed the tacho and disassembled it so all i was left with was a circuit board with the electric motor on it.
i resoldered the joints on the circuit board and put everything back together. sorted working as good as new now so well chuffed with that cheap and easy fix.
on the test drive however i never put the steering cowl back properly and broke the switch for the horn and indicator turn off thingy doh
so i got my old :censored::censored::censored::censored:ed switch column thingy out of the shed and disassembled it and disassembled the broken one on my car and made one good one out of two bad ones. very quick and easy fix and now alls well.
also yesterday myself and fiachra moved around the ast and 2 stroke reservoir to make some room and avoid the ast hitting a pulley again. a little fiddling around and thinking later and we got some space and a stronger bracket so alls good there too.
we also took readings off the water injection control unit and fiachra will be sending them off to the manufacturer to see if its a problem with our wiring or their unit that is causing the system not to work correctly. no harm atm as the car isnt ready for mapping so wont need the water injection.
if i have time during the week i may try and reinstall the hid\'s even though i have a wiring loom from a different kit so might need to adjust a few things to get it to work properly.
