Title: Sounds like side seal failure...
Post by: fly on May 02, 2009, 12:17:11 AM
Pulled up outside my workplace this morning after my usual 40 mile trip around the A406/M11/M25 and i immediately noticed my idle was rouch and lumpy and far to braap braap compared to usual. On the way to work i put my foot down on the motorway and for no apparent reason it overboosted to 1.2 bar (car is non seq,big fuel system, fmic, pfc, mapped by jaydee, rebuild by jimmys), so i immediately backed off and thought i would investigate after work. The turbo gauge was flickering on negative vacuum and the engine felt as if was running on one rotor.

After work i decided to check the plugs, which were fairly black but i wasnt surprised as they have done about 2.5k. It made little differewnce but it seemed to be a bit less "chuggy". For some reason i decided to deny the inevitable and assume it was ignition/vac related. I checked all the hoses, swapped the MAP, changed the coil packs and leads and tried again. Same symptoms but seemed slightly better at idle, still chugging though.

Had to drive home or face being fairly stranded for the evening, car felt fine at motorway speeds if a little noisy, when i got home i can definitely hear a "chh chh chh" noise coming from the rear rotor, there was also a bit of smoke when coming on boost a little during the drive back.

Have had a search on here and it sounds like a chipped tip/stuck side seal, so my car is now going to be parked on my drive and it seems ready to gobble up at least £1000 in bits for me to rebuild, always knew my 2nd rotary experience would end up the same way as the first....engine failure.

Its a shame as i only just had it mapped 1000 miles ago and it felt so fast before the pain started (again).

Should never have sold the DC5 :(
