Title: Losing water...
Post by: mark-ashley on May 01, 2009, 10:34:21 AM
Hello all...

Haven\'t been on here for a while, i trust you are all well !

Developed an annoying fault on my FD, basically, it seems near enough everytime i start the car from leaving it overnight i have to top up the water.

Whilst driving it, all is well, then i park up and have to repeat the above the next time i drive it if i have left it over night...

Easy i hear you say, you have a split pipe...

Well, the strange thing is, it doesn\'t always happen plus, on more than one occasion and now more so as i check everytime, when i park the car up after a decent run, on most occasions it looks like all the water is leaking out once the engine is shut off as opposed to leaking out over a period of time...

On one occasion, i parked up in the Shell garage in Balahm, went in to get some smokes and came out and there was a water leak trail from my car at least 6 foot in length...

Is there a thermostat or something that might be causing the cooling system to dump out all the water ?

I\'m heading down to my mates garage tomorrow to put it on the ramp and check the pipe work, any thoughts on what else it might be ?

Hi

Where abouts are you topping up the water?  Only, if you top up at either of the front two caps (the AST or the overflow) you will over-fill the water, and the excess will get dumped...

The main top-up point is near the middle of the engine (iirc)...

I\'m topping up in the right place, the cap has a 0.9 bar marking on it if memory serves me right, it also has the level sensor on the neck...

Definately not putting it in the AST or the overflow !

Sounds simple, but do you have a hole in the overflow system.

Doesn\'t water get drawn into here under vacuum when the engine is shut-off?

I had a similar thing on my RX7 it was silicon hoses not tight enough, was fine when water was going through it, but when it was shut off water came out.

a common problem is a leaky cap, the cap has a pressure and a return valve (the small silver disc), the disc getts crud building up under it and prevents a good seal, then as the water expands it seeps past. Try gently lifting the return valve and cleaning any debris off.

Sounds like waterseal failure. Do you get lots of steam out the exhaust in the morning?
