Title: A little help needed please ... 99\'spec lights
Post by: SleepyDude on May 01, 2009, 09:46:44 AM
I am thinking about getting hold of some old style rear lights and converting them to the new 99\' look

This is the first time I have tried something like this so if there is a guide or someone can give me some pointers i would be grateful.

Thanks

It is pretty straightforward to do, matey. I did indeed just bung a How To on it on FDUK a couple of weeks back, if you\'re on there?

Yep easy peasy. Basically remove the screws, heat the lights to soften the glue that holds them together (i used a bucket and the kettle), take out the lenses, spray them with a satin spray, put it all back together, after resealing the lights, i used sticks like sh.t (most people call it sealant). Done.

What is the exact size of the circles on the 99\' spec lights? i have seen 70mm on this thread in FDUK
http://www.fduk.org/forum/showthread.php?t=13231

I cant find this how to but i still don\'t think they have made me a member yet as i still cant see the member only areas, just empty.

Anyone have the link to this guide? I now have a set of old style RX7 lights, (Bargain at £30 including delivery)

And what to get on with the conversion.  Cheers

Just recently done mine and found it much easier to put on the middle shelf of the oven on gas mark 1 for about 2-3 mins and keeping checking the temp of the light so i didn\'t melt anything lol :D

Did all my "circles" at 76mm

is that safe? Any warping or melting?

Do you have a pic of your lights so I can see what the size looks like :)

Cheers

Well obv you dont want to get it too hot, just warm enough to melt, the glue.  You can take it out as many times as you want and keep checking to see whether the glue is soft enough but it\'s up to you and what you are comfortable with.  I\'ve done this many times with lights over the years so used to it...

This is what mine looks like with all the lights on:-

they look good though I think I will make the circles slighty smaller.

So now need to choose which method;

Hair dryer, Bucket of hot water or warm oven

Unless there is a better method?

I tried 70mm first but they just looked too small to be honest, the original 99spec are 80mm...

originals are 2 diff sizes, inners are 80 and the indicator is 76mm i think

Yeah, don\'t make the circles too small. I have seen so many people do this and it just looks absolute ....e IMO. Trust me, the best sizes are in that guide i linked to. It says 80mm for the red, and 75mm for the orange. Old pic of mine from 5 years ago

you have undone the screws first haven\'t you lol :)

It will take time to heat the sealant evenly, all i can say is that when i did mine, middle shelf of the pre-heated oven on gas mark 1 to 2 ish leave it in there for a couple of mins and check and keep doing it.

The thing with the oven is it heats it up evenly and the whole thing remains warm so you can just pull the lens off. When i did mine the glue was runny when it did come off.... and was reasonably warm to the touch (40 degrees ish) just dont overdo it, the more you check the less chance of going wrong, you will know instinctively if it\'s getting too hot...

Yea skrews off LOL and had in the oven a while taking it in and out to avoid melting, got so warm it was getting hot to hold and NO movement at all in the glue????

They are old lights I brought second hand but dam this is impossible??? Did you have to lever it off? Or just through pulling?

My 2ps worth is that 80mm circles will be too large and they\'ll blur into each other when they\'re on and viewed from any distance. I made that mistake with the first set I converted, and they looked shlt from anything over a few paces away, just wobbly-edged blobs. I made the second set with a good deal smaller circles and they look much better imho

Well both off now and I choose to do my circles at 76mm for the red and 70mm for the orange. Just have to wait and see how they look.

First coat is on the lences and stick a few more coats make sure it\'s thick enough. Then ill put them on and see how they came out.

Just gotta wait to get my car back from carl at Haywards :)
