Title: ***TRACKDAY*** Cadwell Park 26 June
Post by: Casey on April 29, 2009, 06:38:29 PM
With the encouragement of Clive, I\'ve been looking around to organise/coordinate a trackday for club members and have found it difficult to find something at the right location/price/date. However, I think I\'ve found something :yes;

"Mazda on Track" have booked Cadwell Park for a full day\'s action on Friday 26th June. Price is £165, but they\'ve agreed a price of £149 to club members if we get 10 or more takers. In order to fill as many places as we can with rotaries, alongside other Mazdas, I\'ll be posting this on the RX8 OC forum as well.

Details can be found here;
http://www.mazdaontrack.co.uk/cadwell-park---friday-26th-june-2009---open-pitlane-3440-107-p.asp (http://www.mazdaontrack.co.uk/cadwell-park---friday-26th-june-2009---open-pitlane-3440-107-p.asp)

Those of you who took part in the Brands Hatch trackday I organised last year all seemed to enjoy yourselves :D, so how about a new challenge on this picturesque, twisty, 2.2 m circuit? No excuse now for those of you living "up t\'north" or Midlands, as this track is much easier for you to get to than Brands

Add your name to the list if you are interested. I\'ll confirm more details later. Any questions, post them on this thread or PM me.

Thanks to Malcolm for doing the leg work on this one,

You are reading £149 above if we can get 10 people but if your an MRC full club member read this as £129 as the club will donate £20 to those members who attend this,

Must admit I have never been to Cadwell and it looks a very "tehnical" enjoyable track so I just may have a go at this myself :3gears-lh

Very Interested. Looking on the site do you mean MRC member or "Mazda on track" member ??

Very cheap at £129 :D

What is the best way to order ??

Clive

Thanks for the MRC contribution. I\'d forgotten all about that! This really is a bargain now at £129 for a trackday :yes!!

Shaun

MoT have kindly offered their Club Member discount to us, if we can russle up 10+. Don\'t book on their website yet, else you will have to pay £165 :Nono!

For the moment, just add your name to the "interested" list. Once we get 10+ interested I\'ll speak with MoT to agree how people sign up to get the discounted price. Clive/Lisa usually send a cheque for the MRC contribution after you\'ve attended the event.

To get the ball rolling, based on what you\'ve both said, I\'ve added your names to the list - hope that\'s OK!

Quote from: J_T;603803Will this be suitable for all track abilities including first timers?

Sorry J T, I missed your post. It\'s for all abilities. As it\'s likely to be an all Mazda day there\'ll be plenty of people to give advice and look after you. I\'m sure one of us would be happy to go out as a passenger with you on your first outing, if you wanted.

There will be a very full briefing at the start of the day and you\'ll be able to drive your car around behind a "pace car", where the "racing lines" will be demonstrated, before the event starts.

IMHO, this is probably a better day for a newbie to lose their track virginity than advertised "public, novice" trackdays . There will be a lot of club members around, instead of a mixed group of novice strangers in all sorts of vehicles.

It\'s an "Open Pitlane" format, which means you can go out when you like, for as long as you like, at the discretion of the marshalls, who will limit the number of cars on circuit to a safe number. You\'ll find you probably won\'t be able to stay out for more than 15-20 minutes before you\'ll need to come into the pits for the brakes, your engine, and yourself to cool off.

Nearer the date I\'ll post a set of "trackday tips" we\'ve developed over a the past couple of years.

If you\'ve not been on a trackday before, this is a great opportunity to enjoy your car at speed in safety, with no cameras in sight.

Please bear in mind there is a noise limit of 105dB, so if you have a loud exhaust you may need the sound level checked. You will need a helmet, but these are available for hire on the day for around £10. There are no special clothing requirements unless driving an open-top car.

I\'m sure that would be very useful for a number of us who\'ve never been to Cadwell before, and also to those who\'ve never been on any trackday before.

What exactly can you offer? If on a commercial basis, at what cost and are Mazda on Track and Cadwell Park OK with you offering your services there?

I will post the link once this has been done.

There will be 2 options one for Full MRC members at £129.00 and one for Non members at £149.00

You are correct. If anyone you know wants to go along, simply direct them to the MoT website and they can sign up there. However, unless they sign up as a MoT club member they will pay the £165 price.

I\'ve arranged for a guaranteed 10 places to be available for MRC members (guest or full) at £149 for GUEST members and £129 for FULL MRC members. Please thank the MRC for the additional £20 reduction for FULL membership.  This is not restricted to make of car, although the more rotaries the better, as this is what the club is all about!

Watch this space as there will be an announcement by Lisa shortly about how to purchase a place via the club shop. The first 10 who sign up are guaranteed a place at the above prices, provided we get 10 to sign up. Once we have the first 10 paid up, I\'ll be talking to MoT about reserving further places at these prices.

But to ensure you get your place, SIGN UP as soon as the announcement is made here!!

Not having been on a trackday before, what are the rules with regard to the wearing of crash helmets (assuming a fixed top car) and in-car fire extinguishers etc?
Title: ***TRACKDAY*** Cadwell Park 26 June
Post by: shaunwil on May 11, 2009, 08:12:18 AM
You must wear a crash helmet but they can provide one at a fee if you don\'t own your own. I\'ve never had an in-car extinguisher on any of the previous tracdays. Usually there are plenty of marshall stations with proper kit around the track.

Shaunwil is correct. Any road legal car is OK on track, no special requirements on fire extinguishers or seatbelts, etc. Crash helmets are usually £10 to hire for the day. Qualified race instructors are should be available for 20 minute sessions throughout the day at £25/session. You might want to book an early session in the day to get some tips.

Cheers for the advice. My main concern is whether I have enough head room in the FD to wear a crash helmet, as my head pretty much touches the roof normally. I do have an old motorcycle crash helmet in the loft so will get it down and give it a go, maybe need to recline the seat a bit or something.

Quote from: probedb;606834Anyone know what to do about insurance?

Your normal insurance won\'t cover you so your options are;
1. Talk to your insurers and see if they will cover you for the day for a fee. This is probably a wate of time, as normal insurers simply aren\'t interested in trackday insurance.
2. Go without any cover - I know a lot of people who do this.
3. Get cover from one of the specialist trackday insurers. I\'ve used http://www.moris.co.uk (http://www.moris.co.uk) for trackdays, costs around £75 for cover with around £750 excess and £8000 cover. The reason I use this company is that I know a guy who had to claim and they paid out, no hassle. You might get cheaper, but check whether they have a good history of paying out!

We are guaranteed 10 places, and we need to fill those ten places to get the discounted prices we\'re paying. Once the ten are filled I\'ll be looking to see what extra demand there might be, whether any places are left, and what price we can get tham at, if there are any left.

Best advice is to sign up and pay up for one of the remaining 5 places at the discounted prices as I can\'t guarantee what will happen once the ten places are taken.

I did Cadwell last year in my FD, it was fantastic, my favourite track so far bar Silverstone GP (which is a lot more expensive!)

The noise limit is a static test at ~50% revs, so you will need a pretty noisy exhaust to trip it (unlike Donington\'s 98db drive-by!) They test at the start of the day and give you a "passed" sticker. Mine was only 92db! Although my exhaust was very quiet and passed Donington\'s test easily too.

The track is great, actually suited the FD quite well, although as usual there is the odd corner where gearing is annoying (i.e. shift up and immediately back down) and a couple of the hairpins saw the lighter cars through faster. It\'s not too hard on brakes either, although you will need to haul yourself down when you come through the "forest" and at the end of the main straight, which is pretty quick (think I got around 130mph, but my speedo was well dodgy, so who knows!)

I\'m there in my DC5 on 10th June this year, hoping the weather holds again - I wouldn\'t fancy the forest section with over-hanging trees on a wet day!

I hope you can sort you day off in time!

A towing eye is requested (front or rear, not normally both), but a lot of people with bodykits can\'t fit them, so they normally aren\'t 100% compulsory. In case you should have an "off" (hopfully not!) then just be aware of where a recovery strap/rope could be attached to a secure bit of chassis. That way you can tell the recovery guys to save time. In reality, I expect those guys are quite used to finding somewhere anyway, but you might want to protect any bodykit from being ripped off :Giggle

Just tell your boss your suffering from stress and that this is the ideal way of stress relief. Then add if they would like to contribute to a team/workforce stress relief day then it would be nice.

The only time I was checked for a towing eye was at Rockingham, thankfully on the one occasion I had one fitted! It wasn\'t looked at when I was at Cadwell last year.

However, they will pull you out any old way if you\'re in the kitty litter and that can bend things and damage bodywork, so be advised of where to attach a pull rope in the event! Places NOT to put it - the tie-down hoops at the corners of the chassis (these can\'t support the full weight of the car and will bend) and a strut bar, because that will bend under the full weight of the car too!

**Most regretably Hypothermia (Ian) had a serious incident in his car on the way to Japfest last weekend. I\'m very relieved to report that Ian is absolutely fine, but his car isn\'t - a lot of body panel damage, back suspension and radiator shot. By the time the insurance people have done their bit, the parts are sourced (some custom bits to import) and the repair is done, it\'s highly unlikely Ian will be able to take part. However, he had already booked the day off for Cadwell, so he\'s thinking of coming along anyway, sans RX-8. Ian\'s very handy with his Nikon camera and he\'s most welcome as a passenger in my car.

It\'s in Louth, about 7 miles from Cadwell. Single rooms at £40 B&B seemed a reasonable deal. They\'ve still got some rooms available if anyone else is still looking for an overnight room.

Sorry about the late reply, only just seen this,

If any guest joins MRC they are immediately entitled to any benefits the club has on offer,

As this great day out needs a bit of a kick up the pants and not many have subscribed we will increase the club donation to £30 per member attending, so you will now get this for just £119 which must now be a bigger carrot to get people out on to this event,

Time and time again our members have complained that everything is down South, this one isn\'t so come and have a great day, remember you can wander around at your pace on these type of track days and just have fun,

So come on people come and have fun in your car with no fear of losing your license.

Not sure if I can get my car ready in time but I will pay for a space tonight.

^^^^That\'s brilliant Clive. No excuses now, get your credit cards out and get over to the MRC shop! this is an unbelievable bargain at £119 for a full trackday. Motorsportvision charges £119 for a half-day or evening session, so we\'re getting two sessions for the price of one!

As Clive said, I\'ve especially chosen Cadwell Park as a better venue to reach for those in the Midlands and the North, knowing Brands Hatch was always a trek for those the wrong side of London. If we don\'t get a better response than this, it\'s back to Brands next time (which is easier for me!) - we got 17 of us at BH last year at almost the same time of year and had a fantastic day out. Only 6 takers here so far :3Confused

^^^Well done Clive!

In case there are any trackday virgins out there who are considering this event, I was asked a few questions by an RX8OC member, so it\'s probably worth posting the same information here....

"In answer to your queries and concerns, there will be qualified instructors available throughout the day, at extra cost, typically £25 for a 20 minute session. You can book as many sessions as you like. Additionally, Ian (Hypothermia) is coming along, sans car, as photographer and has said he\'d be happy to go out as a passenger as well. Equally, when my car is cooling down, I\'d be more than happy to go out with you as a passenger to give advice, and/or you can passenger in my car. I\'m no expert, but I\'ve done 5 trackdays now (Brands Hatch and Thruxton). I\'ve not driven Cadwell Park before, but it\'s run by the same outfit (MotorSportVision) who run Brands Hatch, so I\'m expecting the format of the day to be very similar.

Typically the the day will run something like this;
1. Safety briefing. It is compulsory to attend this and each person will get a wristband to confirm attendance. No wristband, no entry to the circuit as these are checked by marshalls at the exit of the pitlane. The briefing will cover the lines around the circuit, overtaking etiquette (strictly by invitatiojn only) marshall\'s flags and other items. If you\'ve watched any F1 or BTCC racing on TV, the flags are exactly the same.
2. Everyone will have to go out in their car for 2-3 laps in small groups behind a pace car. At "sedate" speed the racing lines around the circuit will be demonstrated.
3. The track is opened up for the morning session of around 3 hours. You can go out as often as you like, for as long as you like ("open pitlane"), but the marshalls may hold you back at the pitlane exit if they consider there are too many cars on circuit at one time. Given that most cars/people will only be able to stay out for 15-20 minutes at a time before the car and they need a rest, then this isn\'t much of a problem. You\'ll find the car will need at least the same amount of time in the pits to cool off as on track.
4. They\'ll be a break for lunch of about an hour, which may also entail a trip to top up fuel.
5. The afternoon session of around 3 hours.
6. Chequered flag waved to signify end of the day!

If you drive at the speed you feel confortable with, follow the safety and marshall instructions, and don\'t stay out longer than 20 minutes then there really is minimal chance of any damage. Trackdays are not races, the purpose is for everyone to enjoy their cars at speed in a safe environment. I\'ve been very impressed by the safety aspects at all the trackdays I\'ve attended. Should any driver be seen to be driving unsafely, he/she is quickly "black flagged" and spoken to (but this is very rare!!).

Helmets are compulsory and are available for hire for ~£10 for the day. No special clothing is required.

If anyone has any queries, then please post them here (or PM me) and I\'ll do my best to answer them"

One other thing to remember when the car is cooling down don\'t put the handbrake on. The heat and clampling force will warp the discs !

Can\'t wait. Need some better brake fluid and pads though !

UPDATED LIST - THREE PLACES LEFT AT DISCOUNTED PRICES

^^^^^ Thx Lisa; that\'ll be at least 3 of us propping up the bar the night before then :)

Updating with latest position.

Only 6 takers here so far :3Confused

i have also managed to get another member to renew their membership and will be booking once its processed,     that should leave 1 place.

looking forward to it but not the 3.5 hour drive towing the car.  Early start for me!,  dont think i\'m going to stay over night,  i\'d be paranoid that someone would hook up the trailer and bugger off the with the kit car and the trailer!  Unless of course you guys could all block me in:)

Google maps gives 2 options, the A14 and the M11, (although both involve the M11) the A14 route looks a little more direct and is 9 miles shorter but the roads looks a little twisty.  The route shown as M11 looks less complicated.  I\'ll just listen to Tom Tom i think

The last time I did an MoT event it was effectively a "Badged" MSV event, so I\'m 99% expecting the timings to be exactly the same as that on the MSV website. I will 100% confirm that with the MoT people nearer the date.

AA routeplanner is telling me I have a 3.5hour journey to Cadwell as well, so I\'m staying overnight :Snoring to be fresh the next day:driving!

It looks as though the bookings are going quite slowly for this event (still 16 places left after our 10 and other bookings), so we might be able to grab a few more slots once our allocated 10 are filled, BUT we need to fill the 10 first, as the current price we\'re paying depends on it!

The car is called a stylus, it\'s a sylva based kit car with a 13b turbo engine and gearbox from a turbo II  :)

My cousin dave will be bringing his 20b fd for a shakedown, it\'s not really a track car but has huge brakes and 600 plus bhp so should be fun, it\'s being mapped next week, fingers crossed it will survive!

HELMET ANYONE?
If anyone needs a full face helmet for the day (if you don\'t have your own), the good news is Crissy has a spare full face, medium size one available.

The bad news? It\'s black with pink dragons on; so maybe good for those with tinted windows?

Seriously, if anyone wants to borrow it, first to yell here gets it. If it doesn\'t fit on the day then you can always drop back to the helmet hire option.

Warning though, you might be a serious photography target on the day :D

TRACKDAY TIPS

Crissy also found this http://www.driving-days.co.uk/track-day-preparation.php (http://www.driving-days.co.uk/track-day-preparation.php). Quite a useful checklist for those who\'ve not been on a trackday before. I\'ll post up another checklist later, one that\'s been added to by various people over the past 2 years, and with RX\'s specifically in mind.

HOTELS

I checked with the Beaumont Hotel today and they said;

"We have 2 single rooms @ £40 available. I also have one twin @ £55 and I have a couple of doubles left. I can give you the doubles on SO rate for £50. If you would like to make any more reservations please fill in the attached form and return to me ASAP as our rooms do book up quite quickly".

You will NOT find these rooms available vai the hotel website booking service!

Rather than fill out the form, the contact details for the hotel are;

Jennifer Tymlin
Reservations Manager
Tel: +44 (1) 1229 432378
Fax: +44 (1) 131 2258022
Email: jennifer@magnusproperties.co.u

Just mention my name, Malcolm Case, when making the booking, so they can match it to the email they sent with the offer.

Alternative accommodation, not far from the Beaumont, acn be found here http://www.royaloaksplash.co.uk/ (http://www.royaloaksplash.co.uk/) with reasonable room rates, and rooms available when I checked. Crissy is booked in there (and paid a deposit) as the Beaumont website claimed today, wrongly, that they had no rooms less than £55/night.

So, if you are still thinking about coming along to have some SERIOUS fun, then get your name down quick so I know how many to secure

**CONVOY SUGGESTION** Those driving up from South * South East
Crissy & I are travelling up on Thursday afternoon and could take the A14 route from Colchester, then A1 to Peterborough. I can\'t see anywhere to rendezvous on that A1 stretch, but there is a huge "Serpentine Green" Shopping Centre on the outskirts of Peterborough, on our route, just off the A16 at PE7 8BE. There\'s a Tesco Cafe where we could hang around for everyone to meet before convoying on from there. It\'s about 70 miles, almost all on the A16, to Louth, so around an hour and a bit from there. I\'m flexible on meeting time, but wouldn\'t mind getting to Louth before the traffic builds up, so, "starter for 10", propose leaving the Serpentine around 3.00pm, but could be persuaded to shift that time either way to fit in with others.

What do others think that are travelling in that direction?

Can the people on the list who haven\'t yet paid plse PM me (thx Najiru, I have your PM) or email me at cadwell@casecomputers.co.uk to confirm whether you are still intending coming along or not - thx

Quote from: clive;611798Sorry about the late reply, only just seen this,

Hi Clive,

superb, many thanks for your reply, i would be traveling up from Hampshire, but the track looks worth it.

Will be talking with Tim on Monday to see how the car is going?

Hi Najiru

Please pay via the shop asap. Lisa is due to send the bulk payment for us all to MazdaOnTrack around about now, so if you get your payment in quickly it\'ll be a lot easier to secure your place.

I\'ll contact Lisa to let her know you will be putting your payment through and to hold fire until later today, if she hasn\'t already done the bulk payment.

Even if she has, no problem, I\'ll just have to contact MoT direct and ensure they reserve another place for you.

^^^^^Great stuff, looks like 11 rotary powered cars then :mmmm.

Most of the other cars will be MX-5\'s, but some of them are heavily modded with turbos and track suspension setups, so should be a good day.

Najiru, if you missed it, look at the previous page for my "TRACKDAY ADVICE" post. It\'s a basic check and run-though of what to do before the day, and what will happen on the day.

Cheers

i wont be getting there until about 10 so it will just be a night cap for me.   I have just fitted a huge silencer and it seems to have made a lot of difference, its not pretty but as long as it works i dont care. She was 104 ish db with the old one which was tiny,  i just need the wife to come home so i can noise test it, fingers crossed i will be under 102.....

Had mine checked the other day by a mate as he works as a sound engineer so borrowed a fancy meter from work. Came out at 101db(A) at 5k so I should be fine, seemed a bit close though :D

Post by: antnicuk on June 19, 2009, 08:27:44 AM
what exhaust do you have?  105 limit is quite loud.  depending on your exhuast, you could get a bung, the only option is to have some kind of baffle made up that clamps on to your tail pipe.

Make sure you car is warm before you do the test,  they are quieter when warm

Quote from: TiddlesRX7;617898Im starting to worry about how loud mine is now. What can I do to quiten it down a touch if need be?

Remember that noise level measurements in dB is on a logarithmic scale, not linear. 0dB represents the threshold of human hearing, and each 10db increase represents a perceived doubling of the level of sound to the human ear. So, at 95dB the sound level would be at 50% of the permitted max of 105dB (not 105/2=52.5dB as normal "linear" maths would imply). 55dB is likened to a low volume radio at 1 metre. 105dB is likened to a F1 car at 40 metres, typical close trackside viewing distance. I haven\'t been to live F1 for a few years, but I found the level of noise to be such that a lot of people viewing trackside wore ear defenders, as do all the pitlane people.

One problem with all this is the "A" bit in dB(A). The "A" refers to the "weighting" factor given to various frequencies in a sound. The idea is to try and measure in the way a human ear perceives sound, which is very frequency specific. So the frequencies present in your exhuast "note" will have an impact on the measurement. That\'s why it\'s so difficult to know how "loud" your exhuast is by simple perception, a proper noise measurement is the only way to know for sure.

Be warned that they can be quite strict on these tests, so a noise test or some means of quietening on the day might be wise. Just "be nice" to the guy doing the tests in the morning, and try and find a spot in your rev range that seems quieter, and hit that spot if possible during the test. They ask you to run at half revs during the test, but they won\'t (usually) check exactly on this point!

Post by: TiddlesRX7 on June 19, 2009, 11:20:52 AM
Well on Shauns metre it was 104.5 at around 4.5k-4.7k so hopefully it\'ll be ok as half revs can be seen as 3.5k-4k.
The exhaust is made by a company called Motoria (think thats correct spelling). It was on the car when I got it and the car has been used as a track car/ time trial/ hill climb car in the past so I hope it will be ok.
Although I might bring a box of toffies to offer as a bribe just incase!

Anyone knows if my 180km/h limiter is going to be a problem on the main straight?

I\'m bringing a bung as well just to be sure although I really don\'t want to have to use it. 101db seemed pretty loud to me!

Yes, the limiter will be a problem. 180km/h=112mph; I\'d be expecting to exceed that at Cadwell in my RX-8, based on the fact my terminal speed on the shorter main straight at Brands Hatch was typically 115mph. I know that Clive spoke about removing the 112mph limiter from his imported RX-8 as he also knew it would be a problem.

BTW, is there anyone who needs a helmet on the day, size M (58cm), as CrissyUK has a spare one she can bring along (would save the £10 hire fee)?

^^^^^^C\'mon, there must be someone who\'s itching to do a trackday and can take up the place that probedb unfortunately can\'t now use?

NOISE;
Just got this "official" statement of noise mesurement. Note, noise measured at 3/4 max revs....

"Noise Limits

All vehicles participating in track days at Cadwell Park must conform to the noise limit, on a static test, of 105 dB(A). Noise checks to establish adherence to the relevant limit will be conducted in accordance with current measuring methods as defined by the MSA. Essentially this means that the noise test shall be measured from a position 0.5m behind the exhaust at a 45 degree angle, with the engine running at ¾ maximum revs"

good news and bad news.

I noise tested the kit car today,  the new silencer has brought it down from 104 to 96 :)

The 20b FD is playing  around, the coils look like they are giving up and Dave has work commitments and cant get it sorted in time so there is another place up for sale :(

I have also reserved a twin room which i will be staying in but there will be a spare bed if any of you have passengers that need a room,  bargain of £27 for B&B

I will be trying a few friends to see if they want it but as Probedb pulled out first his place should sell first on here.

Ian.

Yeah, I recall at Brands Hatch that an RX-7 owner with a loud exhaust only revved to about 4000rpm for the test. In any other car that would have been about 3/4, and unless the tester is very knowledeable, it might work if you are concerned you are at the edge on noise;)

***LESS THAN THREE DAYS TO GO***

Ok, I hope everyone is nearly ready! Please make sure you\'ve read the "guide" I posted further up this thread, especially if this is your first trackday.

Make sureb you\'ve read the legal stuff here;
http://www.motorsportvision.co.uk/cadwell-park/trackdays/trackdaytermscp_c.asp (http://www.motorsportvision.co.uk/cadwell-park/trackdays/trackdaytermscp_c.asp)

Essential things on the day;
License; both parts if you have them
Suitable clothing
Spare oil, water, other fluids
Pump for tyres and pressure gauge (although I\'ll have mine with me)
Money for helmets, instructors, food, drinks, etc

Weather is looking pretty good, just the risk of a few thundery showers, but otherwise hot an dry.

As you may have seen from above, we have only 9 cars now, as David Stephanou and probedb can unfortunately no longer make it.

If anyone hasn\'t insurance sorted, and still wants to, I\'ve gone with these people today;

Motorsport Insurance Services (MIS)
Contact: Anthony Yeung
Direct Dial: 01943 883 420
Fax: 01943 877 400
//www.raceinsurance.co.uk

Cost for me was £80 for the day (£9000 cover, £900 excess). Very simple "over the phone" process, with very little info needed to get the quote.

I took over 240 pictures during the day, with Malcolm helping taking a stint while Shaun took me around in his FD. A nice mixture of 5\'s, 7\'s, 8\'s with a smattering of exotica.

For those interested in the camera: a Nikon D60 with a AF-s Nikkor 55-200mm lens, plus a circular polarizer to help reduce the amount of windscreen reflection.

What a absolutely fantastic day; the track, the people, the cars, the weather, and did I mention the track:Thumbs-up:InLove:Laugh:mmmm:yes lovely to drive, loads of challenges and set in an absolutely stunning setting.

A BIG thankyou to everyone who came along and made this a truely memorable and fun event. Everyone I spoke to on the day, whether RX8OC, MRC, MoT or just a driver in the pits were all so friendly. That followed through onto the track where I experienced near perfect etiquette re passing (sadly not always the case on trackdays!!).

Tony - a awesome car you have there :god, so sorry you had problems and had to "retire" so early in the day. I hope you get it fixed soon and I can see it in action, as I didn\'t see you on track! Enjoy Abbeville, allbeit if it\'s in the BMW:).

Overboost - sorry I didn\'t realise you were there until I spoke to Clive late in the day and he told you of your problems - gutted for you:(. I hope the enforced "accelerated" upgrade to the car is some compensation.

Clive, glad Lisa persuaded you that you should join us. Hope you will decide to come along to more!

Ian - HUGE thanks for coming along with the "support" vehicle (secure storage and specialist stylus towing car) and recording the day\'s events.

Shaun, Adrian, Martin, Neil and Matt. Lovely to meet you all too and experience the event alongside you. I hope I see you all at another one soon!

First and foremost, many thanks to Malcolm for organising this for us all to enjoy,

Most of us met up and had a nice pleasant relaxed evening at the Beaumont hotel in Louth , a hotel which turned out to be clean comfortable and served excellently prepared food, but best of all Malcolm had found this nice little place at a cost considerably less that the cattle market Premier lodges and the like,

Dealing with the bad stuff first, I was sad to see Tony\'s (antnicuk) Rotary powered "Racing car" sidelined early on in only his second run with what I sincerely hope proves to be no more than electrical gremlins so we can all see Tony\'s hard work in the flesh, I watched him out on track and the car sounded awesome and it would have been interesting to see how the cars speed would have progressed through out the day.

Next up was Tiddles who fought water problems off and on all day and Najiru who sprung a water leak from a chafing intercooler hose, but worse of all was Overboost who arrived at the circuit and before he got on track his cars engine  blew a water seal big time after giving no previous signs at all resulting in the car being recovered away :o

Mind you it could have been worse as one, track only MX-5 totaled it by spinning backward into the barrier and then head first just to make sure it fitted nicely into a carrier bag to take it home, most importantly though after talking to the guys inside they were fine :Thumbs-up

Some of you know that yes I raced cars  back in the days of steam but this was my first "Track-day" and also I had never ever been to Cadwell and did look forward to experiencing such an undulating track, indeed one of the reasons this track was picked was because it was "technical" with no long straights and we figured this would give some parity between RX-7\'s and RX-8\'s, however what I didn\'t count on was that this would also considerably help the MX-5\'s, mind you most had fully sorted suspension and tyres and a lot were Super charged or Turbo charged with some running 300bhp which explained why they kept up with our cars!

As the day progressed it was great to see all of of you not only enjoying the day which ultimately is what it\'s all about but also all of you becoming progressively quicker as the day went on,

Overall it took me a lot of years to even consider a track day but I am now pleased that I fully know the limits of the RX-8, limits that I defy anyone to be able to find on the road and so track days are something I would encourage you all to at least consider if only one to enable you to be able to become much more at home with your RX, whatever model you may own,

Lastly many thanks to Ian (Hypothermia) for being service barge and camera man,

A little search around has revealed a you tube link from the day we were there however one of the best bits of the circuit has been left out which is the series of corners at the top of the circuit past the club house, corners that once a nice flow through them was sorted was very satisfying .

I went out with a guy in a stripped out porsche 944 with around 100bhp. He was quite local and knew the track quite really well. The lines and car control he had was amazing and I starting using his lines more through the flowing corners to try and get more pace.

Looking on the MoT site they are doing Oulton in November. Are we considering doing the same as this ?

I would definitely use that hotel again and would love to do Cadwell again :D

Absolutely gutted to hear the water seal let go on Jasons car. He rang me in the morning to ask me what was going on?!
Clive - any ideas on what happened? Ancillary failure leading to water seal? When you say the water seal failed big time, how dyou mean? possible cracked water seal groove casting?

Personaly never known a water seal fail this badly with no warning,

He had never put water in it previously or had the buzzer on , got to the track and had the low water buzzer come on and it would not restart,

Put water in  and I started it for 1 or 2 minutes on one rotor with white smoke out the exhaust,

Turned it off undid the cap and found huge pressure and no water, game over

On a different note !,

I know from when I was racing that you use an awful lot of fuel on track so how about this for RX-8 fuel economy,

When I got to the track I pulled the battery lead off and reset my ECU which reset the trip meter,

As we left the circuit I noticed  I had done 35 miles while on track which has equated to 5.8 miles to the gallon  "SmileyCentral.com"

Not sure how much fuel I used on track. Around 3/4 of a tank to a full tank though. But saying that I only used 2 full tanks all day including the 400 mile round trip. The fuel light came on just as I left the m6 to Kendal (about 8 miles from home)

bloody hell :( thats pretty damn catastrophic. I know the buzzer did used to go off when u first started the car from cold, but i used to ignore it because it did it every single time and if u went to check the water level, itd be normal. The buzzer would go out after about 30seconds and then you could carry on as normal. I did 250 miles after and got home, let it cool down and water level was still perfect!!
If i were a betting man, id have money on a broken casting

I just wired in a speed delimiter and just wanted to make sure the ECU was reset after performing the exercise but by disconnecting the battery naturally it reset the distance trip without pushing the button

Quote from: Casey;620552What a absolutely fantastic day; the track, the people, the cars, the weather, and did I mention the track:Thumbs-up:InLove:Laugh:mmmm:yes lovely to drive, loads of challenges and set in an absolutely stunning setting.

Very big thanks to Casey for organising the day and the weather and to MRC for the members subsidy.
Great day. Second time at Cadwell and not the last. I recon I did 38 laps at 9MPG !! After picking lumps of soft squigy rubber off of the rims, I haven\'t dared to look at the state of the R888s.
Pushed Rex in the garage and shut the door. LOL.

Martin H
Martiin H

Big thanks to Casey for organising the day and the weather, and thanks to MRC for the members subsidy.

A little bit late in the day but a huge thank you to Casey for persuading me to have a go and everyone else for making this such an enjoyable day for my first proper track day experience!

Thanks Ian for the pictures, I thought I\'d send one to my parents in Italy but my dad\'s answer was that "at my age I should be sitting at home doing little crochet (uncinetto for BSE and Rei99) instead of doing track days" so perhaps it will just go on my wall of fame at home. :Giggle

Also a huge thanks to Shaun for "holding my hand" during my last stint around the circuit despite being tricked into it by Clive  hahahahahaha

I know I am repeating myself here but I really really loved that track. For me it was super challenging mostly psychologically because I had a couple of nasty accidents on similar roads in the past so to actually complete the first lap without needing my tissues or storming out of the car half way through was a huge accomplishment. the rest was just big smiles all the way. when are we going again??!!   :driving

And a warm hello goes to Michelle (and Greg): hopefully the next time we meet at a track day we\'ll get to do the girlie lap that Greg suggested. hope your one day event went well.

Finally I also wanted to say hello to Marta who I spoke to several times during the day whilst we were watching her husband go round the track in the blue MX5. I don\'t know what your forum names are so I hope you see this.

Oh yes, I haven\'t introduced myself yet: I am... err... Crissy, from the RX8OC forum. Those of you who have met me on Friday will have realised that I am clueless when it comes to all this stuff... as you talk about superchargers and ecu\'s I am thinking about Feng Shui for the car and whether my denim shirt goes well with the paint colour. But we seem to have some common ground in the fact that we all enjoyed the Cadwell Park experience.

Hope to see you all again soon!

Ciao,
Crissy

There is also an evening track session organised by MOT at the end of August at Bedford Autodrome which sounds like a superb circuit.

I am thinking about it and there is at least one other person (Ray) who wants to do it.
