Post by: lewisneale on April 27, 2009, 11:24:01 PM
right first proper day of fixing and playing around..

safety first
(http://www.postimage.org/gx29tlmS.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=gx29tlmS) jack it up(http://www.postimage.org/PqqAnFA.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=PqqAnFA) secure on axle stands
(http://www.postimage.org/aVljmm0.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aVljmm0)tools and equipment ready

first job to tackle was changing the exhaust manifold gasket because it appeared to have a a bit of a blow
all the nuts were easy to remove after a spray of some "rust off ice" only a little bit of force was needed to seperate the exhaust from the studs
(http://www.postimage.org/aVljGj9.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aVljGj9)this is the old gasket
i forgot to take a photo of the new gasket before putting it on so here it is in position(http://www.postimage.org/aVloI5i.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aVloI5i)
put all the nuts back on nice and tight..... no bashed knuckles:wiggle

not a hard job at all.

right next up was to sort out my window squirters, I found that the t-piece under the grill at the base of the windscreen had crumbled! (http://www.postimage.org/aVlq2U9.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aVlq2U9)
a quick visit to my local motor spares shop and i had a new t-piece similar to the original one, easy fix.

Have you got a Cat 1 alarm fitted?  Cos I had a switch like that fitted to my car as part of getting a new alarm - it allowed for (very slow) entry of a reset code...

And nice work on the tidy-up - looks in good condition (and its always impressive the different a quick clean up and a lick of pint can make :Thumbsup! )

Deffo running rich from the smell of it when you left, dude. Still not sure if car carbs have a pilot jet like bikes do, but I\'d investigate whether it\'s them blocking up with old petrol varnish giving you that nasty throttle transition at low revs pickup. Exactly what my last carbed bike used to do, that.

Good photos, top car!

the drive home was a bit smelly, something is not right somewhere.
going to really get stuck in though and get it running well and i have a few other ideas, i don\'t need to drive it as i have a daily driver so it will take as little or as long as it needs.

nice to meet you, i will still come to meets even if mine is not working, i can always jump in with adam if he lets me after that photo............

Might be worth just starting off with some sort of rotary-friendly carb/engine flush, dude, if there is such a thing. Might be a real quick and easy fix, you never know.

I\'m not used to people saying it was good to meet me, usually I have the opposite effect :rollinSeriously, though, always good to meet a fellow Leeds sufferer, er I mean supporter :)

if leeds make the playoff final, would you want a ticket? as i can prob get a couple.
Title: my FB work in progress updates
Post by: Nik da Greek on April 30, 2009, 08:31:47 PM
I guess it\'d depend on the date, dude. I\'ve already used my leave allocation for the year....though it\'d be rather tempting to take a sickie over something like that :D...though then I\'d need to take another to get over the inevitable crushing defeat :(. I\'d have to check in me diary

How wude!...like I said, dude, I\'ve got a nice li\'l League Champions 91-92 badge on my work bag to remind Man Utd fans that football wasn\'t just invented 15 years ago like they seem to think it was :D. Who did we beat to the title that year? hmmm, wouldn\'t have been Man Utd would it :p
Title: my FB work in progress updates
Post by: Ada7 on April 30, 2009, 11:25:51 PM
Oh yes it was and well done to you. But dont think that us United fans think football has only been around for 15 years just because we\'ve been the most successful club in that time :p
I do believe we the first English club to win the European cup many moons back :DAnyway, this thread isn\'t about football (or whatever Leeds United think they play :p) but lewis\'s project :D

You\'re right :yes. Well, I reckon carb cleaner of flush is the first thing to try, so long as it\'s safe for all the rotary seals and stuff. I think I remember a thread about fuel treatments being bad for water seals and that once, but hopefully someone who knows what they\'re talking about (clearly not me :o) will confirm or deny that?

Maybe that and a new set of plugs and make sure all the right holes are blocked off form the air pump being disconnected. Will all make a change i\'m sure :D

Air Filter to check.
Also if the car has not had a new fuel tank it will most likely leak at the top seam behind the fill point when you fill up. New tanks were still available a couple of years ago.

did some more bits to the FB this week,
seen as they was no belt to it I removed the air pump, and associated parts...... i think ! :?

i have got a blanking plate coming thanks..mpk490p
i take it it goes here ? or do i take more off or put some back on, i will find out i suppose when the plate arrives...

i also noticed this bit broken when i was in the engine bay ..... some kind of vacum part i believe... am i right ?
being dumb here but i don\'t know what it does...

right this pipe that is circled do i block it off ? its part of the air pump bits and bobs right ??
(http://www.postimage.org/aVHp9zS.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aVHp9zS)

shall i leave it connected to the part at the top ?

i am thinking of removing this big waste of space and power eater ...........
(http://www.postimage.org/PqTkboi.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=PqTkboi)

and then putting these 2 little beauty\'s on....... good idea or not ??
do they need to suck or blow and in which direction ?
(http://www.postimage.org/PqTkMOr.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=PqTkMOr)
Title: my FB work in progress updates

i also removed the rear spoiler to see what its like without it.... it was only held on with 2 nuts 1!!
not sure to keep it on or off, i can\'t be bothered with having to fill all the holes and try and colour match the paint etc, i could put in little black blanking circles but there would be a few cos of lots of holes.
(http://www.postimage.org/gxjvLVA.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=gxjvLVA)(http://www.postimage.org/aVHrigA.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aVHrigA)
it does look good from the side though !

or does anyone know if you can get special spray paint that can go onto rubber and look good ?

more on that switch that was behind the centre console.....
it has 2 black wires coming off it one to here which is prob earth !
(http://www.postimage.org/gxjxqGA.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=gxjxqGA)

and the other is to one of the coils here..... dodgy pic..

(http://www.postimage.org/aVHteuA.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aVHteuA)

there is no connection to power or anything else and the car starts, runs and does everything the same which ever way the switch is turned !
except the battery voltage goes up or down if you switch it on or off.... which ever way that is  :?  and the warning lights on the dash go brighter or dimmer like wise..
strange

Morning Lewis, Been away for a couple of days. Attached are some guides to swopping the exhaust from the Mazda original which include the blanking off details. One set is Janspeed literature, the other is Double \'S\'. They both say really the same thing. Hope they help.

Alters the choke valve angle in the carb barrel when you pull the choke out, depending on temperature (there is a bimetal element) and vacuum (there is a vac pipe to the bottom flange). A feature I think designed to reduce overchoking problems in warmer weather.
Can be adjusted with the little nut on the end of the rod. The adjustment needs  various temperature measurements to get an exact factory setting - might be best changing the broken diaphragm unit and setting it as near back to where the adjust nut was as possible.
