Title: Suddenly have an interest in single turbos - some questions:
Post by: M@r]{ on April 26, 2009, 11:41:14 PM
Weighing up the pros and cons of doing this and seeing that my engine has to come out and eventually get mapped I figure the most cost effective way of going single would be to do it now!  So, i\'ve got a few questions.  I know just about squat about the single turbo set up so bare with me

External Wastegate?  I love the noise but is there a way of quickly making it internal again to quiten it down?  Ie for when you want to go on track?

I really like that high pitched warble when you back off the throttle?  The alternative to a BOV whoosh, what is that exactly?  A re-circulating valve of some sort?  What are the pros and cons of it over a BOV?

Ball-bearing turbo?  Benefits?

Rebuild costs?  Is there a variance turbo to turbo?

Porting?  How does that effect the turbo?  Ie how early or late it will come in?

Cheers guys

Mark

This is simply a case of routing the screamer pipe back into the exhaust system a easy job but you\'ll need access to the underside of the car. It could be done automatically with a diverter valve though.

This is the unused boost pressure reversing its flow over the turbo blades it can have a detrimental effect on turbo life though. Another alternative is a ported shroud turbo.
QuoteBall-bearing turbo? Benefits?
Ball bearing turbo\'s tend to be of a later design more efficient with quicker spool.
QuoteRebuild costs? Is there a variance turbo to turbo?
Journal bearing turbo\'s are cheaper to buy initially and much cheaper to rebuild than ball bearing versions.
QuotePorting? How does that effect the turbo? Ie how early or late it will come in?
Porting effects the VE of the engine increasing gas flow and the more flow you have the quicker and lower you will spool your turbo. Its all down to getting the correct combination of port and turbo size which your engine builder should be able to advise on. The ECU map will also effect spool point as will exhaust, inlet etc etc your engine is only as efficient as its weakest link.
