With the new £2000 scrappage allowance coming in shortly, many RX7\'s will be booking appointments with the crusher, bad news for spares in the future.
Why bother to sell a rex needing work on ebay for £500,when you could get £2000 for it ,if you want & can afford a new car?

Same thought had crossed my mind. I\'ve seen no details as yet for the scheme but does the old car have to be a runner? If it\'s like Germany you have to have owned the old car for a year? Is that correct?
Hope everyone will do the decent thing and tell me when they\'re scrapping so I can transfer them from the \'Living\' part of my register to the \'Dead Pool\'. Selfish aren\'t I.

Motorists to get £2,000 to scrap old cars under 2009 Budget

Motorists will be given £2,000 towards the cost of a new car if they scrap a 10-year old model, under plans announced by the Chancellor to revive the motoring industry.

(http://www.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01389/scrapyard_1389437c.jpg) Car scrappage plans have proved highly successful elsewhere in Europe Photo: Heathcliff O\'Malley

The "scrappage" scheme, costing the Government £300 million, is intended not only to boost the ailing car industry, but to take some of the most environmentally unfriendly vehicles off the road.
It will start next month and run until March 2010 and follows the introduction of a similar scheme in Germany, which triggered a 40 per cent rise in car sales last month.

Alistair Darling - who delivered his Budget  (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/budget)yesterday - believes the scheme will result in at least 300,000 new cars being bought in Britain by the time the scheme finishes and will kick-start an industry which was bracing itself for its worst year for new registrations since the recession of the early 1990s.
Full details of the scheme, which will also apply to vans, will be announced by Lord Mandelson\'s Department of Business within the next few weeks.
It will entail the Government putting in £1,000 towards the cost of a new car, with the amount being matched by the car maker.
Somebody wanting to participate in the scheme would begin negotiations for a new car at the dealership by providing proof of the car\'s age and the fact that they have owned the vehicle for at least a year.
This would prevent somebody buying a very cheap car from a scrapyard and using it to claim the discount.
The car would also have to be inspected, either by the dealer of an official Authorised Treatment Facility. Once these formalities have been completed, a certificate would be presented which would enable the motorist to buy a new model.
Manufacturers participating in the scrappage scheme will be obliged to make their entire range of cars available, including their very cheapest models, often costing less than £6,000.
Privately some industry observers fear that dealers will use the scrappage scheme to withdraw discounts they would otherwise have offered to clinch a deal.
Nevertheless the car industry, which has suffered months of redundancies and production cutbacks, welcomed the Government\'s decision to adopt the scheme they have spent months campaigning for.
\'This will boost the new car market and get consumers to get back into car showrooms," said Paul Williams, chairman of the Retail Motor Industry Federation. "This will make further lay offs at car plants and dealerships much less likely".
It was also welcomed by Paul Everitt, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. "This is good news for consumers and will get people back into showrooms, kick-starting demand in the market. The scheme recognises the economic value of the motor industry and we are determined to make it a success."
Edmund King, the AA\'s president, also hailed the introduction of the scheme. "A £2000 incentive from Government and manufacturers will help the economy, environment and employment. Cleaner, greener and safer cars will replace some of the older gross polluters," he said.
But the "green" credentials of the scheme were questioned by some of the Government\'s own environmental advisers, including Phillip Selwood, chief executive of the Energy Saving Trust.
"The government\'s announcement on scrappage contradicts the carbon friendly announcements in the budget such as money for electric vehicles, CO2 related Company Car tax and the increase in fuel duty," he said.
"This policy will increase car purchase regardless of CO2 emissions and the government has missed a significant opportunity by spending public money to incentivise any car upgrade when they could have incentivised the lowest carbon emission cars."

Sorry about that, moderator delete above post if u wish,i did\'nt realise it would take up that much room!:spank

You have to own an old banger for a year & the car must be 10 years or older.
Gov gives £1000
Manufacturer gives £1000

Scheme only runs until march 2010!not long.

Looks like you can purchase any new car with the £2000 allowance.

if you scrapped the banger you had for a year then got the £2000 cash back from the dealers and the gouvernement to get a car.. could u buy the car and sell it £1000 cheaper on the market as brand new. then make urself a nice quick wage and buy another banger then wait till next year untill this scheme comes back in again if it works. lol :P

Haha,
Everyone working out how they can benefit from this inc me!
All 2nd hand cars over 10 years old are entitled to the £2000 allowance, providing the owner has had it for a year.
New vehicles purchased do not have to have low c02 emissions, you could if you wanted & could afford, trade in your banger & get say £2000 off an RX8!!!!
Only a few 1st gens go for over £2000 subject to condition etc,i would guess 70% of 1st gens in this recession would sell for far less than that, making them vulnerable to the crusher.

Seriously guys if you owned a sub £2000 car it means the reason you own it is because you cant afford a brand spanking new car, say the average Eurobox cost you £12K leaving you still with 10k to find you still would keep your old car as you cash strapped at the moment.

Germans have more desposiable income then us.
In fact I can see used sub 2k car being around for a lot longer in times of recession. As people just want a cheap round around.

And if you have a classic like a 1st Gen I can see the prices of these rising.

A ....box of a Fiesta etc etc owned by an old man being traded in for brand new fiesta is the more likely sceanario for this scheme

Yep,
I think Blitzboy is right,it\'s probably only of any benefit if you have an old hatchback & could afford to buy a cheap new hatchback.
The schemes been popular in Germany & france with all new car sales benefitting.
You can get cheap new hatches from approx £6k,so if you trade in your old banger,it\'ll only cost you £4k for the new car!

very true some people will be taking out loans to buy a new car regardless of the discount given.

Really the Government should be capping the amount credit card companies can charge on interest. This will be of more benefit to people

if its only on until march next year and you have to have owned it for a year then you cant really scam it unless you genuinely own the car so no point buying up old cars.

This is bound to benefit german and france as they actually have a car making industry... we dont unless people go out and buy a noble which is unlikely!

German recycling companies apparently hate the rules as much as the car dealers love them. Recycling depots have no capacity left. Their stores are reportedly racked with spares they cannot sell and, according to a recent radio feature, they are crushing 20,000km cars because they\'ve been traded in and there\'s nowhere to put the parts if they break them.

Germany doesn\'t have a company car culture so they tend to keep their cars longer anyway and the second hand market is not full of late models like the UK\'s. Even so some Germans are complaining that the, mostly smaller, cars the subsidy encourages people to buy aren\'t made there so it does not help jobs in manufacturing, only retail and service.

Chevrolet (aka Daewoo) are doing quite well out of it it seems, which has to be good news.... :2Confused

"we" also make Nissans and Mini\'s. doesn\'t a mini have a Peugeot engine in now? Are they worth double the patriotic points?  I\'d like to do my bit and there\'s a 92 Nissan still technically registered in my name - the continued existence of which is being imperilled now that I\'ve remembered it\'s there.

it really is a load of rubbish this new scheme, it\'s been talked about for several months and what a coincidence the price of new cars have risen by a minimum of £1k since the recession started and I saw the new VW Gulf is now £21k for the basic model????????????????????????????? know one will be saving anything on buying a new car.

keep your cars as they will be worth a small fortune in a few years time. I dread to think just how many rotaries prior to the FD are actually left in the UK or even Europe !!
I have seen a massive amount of scrapping of rotaries at present and the FD has suffered massively and their prices have plummetted.  FC\'s and cars prior have faired better because they are cheaper to buy and cheaper to run and maintain but even so they are constantly being scrapped as they are worth more to do so for spares.
Me personally I would much rather pump a few more HC\'s in the air and keep my rotary regardless of what the government might offer or indeed any car dealer. What we have are classic cars and one day people will be kicking themselves for getting rid of them so cheaply.

I\'ve noticed FB\'S & FC\'s are getting scrapped at an alarming rate considering there are\'nt that many left.
Spares will become a real problem in 5 years or so,this scrappage scheme is likely to condemn even more salvagable cars to the crusher, leaving even fewer left.
FD\'s seem to be less at risk as they usually sell for more than £2k.
If numbers plummet further which they will, are the few remaining FB\'S & FC\'S likely to be worth more,i don\'t know??????
That\'s a real good point made about most car manufacturers raising their prices by at least £1k recently,so that wipes out 50% of the £2k allowance.:2Rolleyes

Thats the one reason why I am hanging onto my FC, it may not pay dividends now but in a few years time it will. You only have to look at classics like the ford capri, cortinas etc, theyare going for more than you can buy a FC for, some on the same sliding scale as the FD. if you can afford to keep a rotary then keep it,preserve it,enjoy it and in a few years time you will be the envy of the motoring world.

I\'ve been saying this for ages and boring everyone I know about how rotaries will be guaranteed copper-bottom classics soon, those that survive. Well, maybe not RX-8s, they\'re a bit too mainstream just now. The maths just don\'t add up, engine rebuilds are more expensive than ever due to Mazda\'s insane parts re-pricing, but the cars are worth less. Who\'s gonna rebuild a 3 1/2 grand FD when it may cost more than that for the rebuild? It\'s worth a grand or so in bits, so that\'s how it ends up....

The Governments\' feeble bribery scheme is such an unadulterated bucket of arse-gravy I can\'t even work up my usual anti-authority hatred enough to give it dignity it doesn\'t deserve by giving it a good rant...

I agree with keeping the FB\'s and FC\'s I plan to keep mine, even if money gets so tight, I\'ll cancel my insurance/Tax etc declare it SORN and keep it in storage... they will be worth a bucket load in the next few years, so hold onto them for as long as possible.
