Title: How hard is titanium welding?
Post by: Nik da Greek on April 08, 2009, 06:34:21 PM
Anyone know exactly how specialist an operation this is? Is it the sort of thing that a good engineering firm that does ally welding and stuff would be able to do? Or is it ridiculously obscure and I\'m gonna struggle to find anyone that can do it?

The flanges on my downpipe and new midpipe are about 10mm different in doameter, and I was hoping to be able to get the flange cut off the midpipe and a bigger one welded on, but the problem is it\'s titanium. Am I dreaming, or is it possible :3Confused? Anyone know?

Cheers, Ash :Thumbs-up. It\'d be nice to know if it\'s at least possible. It may be that J can find someone local to do it, but if not I\'d like to know I\'m gonna be able to find someone who can.

It\'d be easier to weld a smaller flange onto the downpipe, but that\'d create a restriction and it\'s a PITA to take the downpipe off to do it, so the midpipe\'d be the better option if poss

Here\'s a random one: Titanium can be used to build road and time trial bicycles...you might want to see if you have any bike builders in your area (may be a bit of a long shot) who would do it for you.

If i remember correctly titanium is easier to weld than ali. Either way you\'ll be surprised what your local metal fabricators or black smiths can do. I know a blacksmith thats got qualifications to call himself a metalologist he can weld anything. Any firm specialising in exhausts or anything vehicle specific will rip you off.

I think titanium can be a nightmare to weld. The actual welding isnt the difficult part, but I think it reacts badly with atmospheric gases so precautions have to be taken to avoid contamination. I think they use argon fixtures to purge the area on the weld and behind it. Also I think surfaces need to be clinically clean to avoid problems.

Thanks for all the help and advice, guys, especially Ash and Stu for trying to sort me out with getting it done. I spoke to Jason who\'s doing the work and he\'s come up with what should be a clever solution that should avoid having to cut or weld anything, so hopefully I may not have to get it welded now. Of course, if it doesn\'t work I may well be begging help off you, Stu :).

Thanks again, guys :god
