Title: DILEMA! RX7 or Evo 6
Post by: F8L_FAZ on April 06, 2009, 06:25:38 PM
:xconfused  As the Heading suggests.. Ive never had either car before but without a doubt be purchasing one. I love the looks and the whole rotary idea about the rx7 the only thing thats holding me back is that the 7 is slower to 60 than the evo6 now iknow its not a big issue but i dont plan to carry out any mods for a while. Just wondering if i were to mod the 7 what would i need to do to say get 60 to around the 4 sec mark? also how much will it cost

My understanding is that the 0-60 time is more about gearing than it is about hp. I believe that if you kept the standard FD gearbox you\'d have to spend thousands to get close to dropping 1 second off that time.

I think if 0-60 is very important to you, you\'d be better off with an Evo.

how many times do you actually race from a standstill? straightline speed rx7 is faster than an evo, remember an evo or scooby doo loses about 80bhp through the 4 wheel drive.

you will also get more attention and respect with an rx7:Giggle

much rarer and better looking to:mmmm

Rob i definitely agree the rx7 is more rare looks MUCH better and your right even in an evo i wouldnt launch it unless i have a few clutches to spare in the boot, but i always thought the evos had more torque? obviously assuming both are completely stock

FD3S \'99-\'02 Power was 280 PS (206 kW; 276 hp), with 313.8 N·m (231 ft·lbf) of torque as per the maximum Japanese limit (source: Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_RX-7))

Evo 6 Torque was increased to 275 ft·lbf (373 N·m) at 3000 rpm. Power officially stayed the same, at 280 PS (276 hp/206 kW) as agreed by Japan\'s automotive gentlemen\'s agreement that all cars would have 276 or less hp... (source: Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_Lancer_Evolution#Evolution_VI))

So yeah the Rx7\'s torque is much much lower than the Evo 6.

torque is for tractors and American stuff that doesn\'t go round corners and still think pushrods are the pinnacle of automotive engine design excellence. :D

If you\'re worried about 0-60 times, buy an already modified RX-7 with some decent porting and a fast-spooling single.......prices are low enough right now. You\'ll beat the Evo and drive an object of beauty, not something that looks like it hit every branch of the ugly tree as it fell out.

Mudflaps, I ask ya...they\'re for trucks, too, not performance cars :rollin

i\'d agree with lee mills: you\'d get bored of owning an evo.....and then you\'d end up buying one of these anyway. if you want a fast saloon car, then buy the evo. if you want a fast sports car, then buy one of these.....

ive got an evo 4 at the moment, amazing car, but you cant compare the two.
one is a road going rally car the other is a light weight rwd racer.
it depends what you wont. im planning to get a rx as a track car and keep the evo for day to day use.

Evo\'s are just plain boring to drive, no fun at all. Look like buses and will cost more to repair than a FD. They are turning into Scooby mondeos.

You will haveto pay £££££££ to highly tune an evo

4WD are for pussies...
I have never considered getting an Evo... the only reason people drive 4WDs is because they are too scared of a high powered RWD drive.. then they come out with the excuse that they like 4WD more... please your balls aren\'t strong enough lol

lol this is a good thread, i have considered buying a evo or something like that as my next car but every time i come back to a rx7, evo\'s are nice cars but like people have said above i think i would get bored very quickly.
The way i see it is 4wd and front wheel drive are easy to drive and are very easy for anyone to corner and drive well, where rwd takes alot more skill to drive hard, if you can get it right rwd wins :yes

then the evo is for you :D my step brother had an Evo 6 that he sent to rally art and came back with 400bhp and that was an absolutly stupidly fast car round corners and straight,as a young lad i used to be really scared didnt like going out with him, but he was going through a set of tyres every 3 month and the cluch was the WORST round town it was really really poor. sort of like all or nothing.

I\'ve had 2 x RX7s and 1 x Evo 6.5 Tommi Makinen. I returned to a RX7 from the Evo for a number of reasons. Firstly the 7 is undeniably the most beautiful car to have come out of Japan - how many other 17 year old car designs have stood up to that test of time ? Secondly, the Evo is too much like driving a car simulator or a console game - yes, it\'s fast, but it doesn\'t feel as fast as the 7, cornering requires no skill, getting the best out of it just requires you to plant your foot and that\'s it. Lastly the Evo just attracts a different crowd of people than the 7 - no disrespect intended, but you get the all the hoodies and Nova brigade "bigging you up" all the time, whereas the 7 attracts anywhere between genuine enthusiasts and generic admirers (that half the time don\'t even know what the car is).

My 2p...

I have a few mods done to my rx7, front mount, alloy rad, apexi + pfc downpipe etc and i also have a blob eye impreza. i use the scooby as the daily driver because its comfortable and practicle and the 4 wheel drive is great for when your half alseep in the morning and late for work!! but getting into the rx7 is a total different experience.put the foot down in the rx and its all out mahem!!!
i forgot what the moral of this story is but i have both so i dont need to choose!!!:Thumbsup!

would pick the rx7 on looks and fun factor hands down though!!

The RX7 will cost less then the EVO to get it going really quick.

This has been discussed loads of times before on here so i\'ll go through the basics again.

Buy the evo if you....

Want a car thats easy to live with.
Easy to get in & out of
Easy to drive fast in the wet and dry
Something the missis would like to drive.

Buy the FD if you...

like the smell of petrol
You don\'t mind dislocating your hip to get out the car in a busy car park
Can live with hard suspension
Don\'t want Your missis to drive it

They are completely different cars. Only thing they have in common is they are both fast and handle well. Evo feels like your sitting on the car instead of in it, FD feels like your ass is 2" off the ground.

Evo makes a fantastic multi purpose car. The FD makes a fantastic track car. IT depends on what your looking for.

Practicality = Evo
Fun = FD

There is a big thread on the ameican site here

this flies in the face of what most people will say is \'common\' sense, but i\'d be willing to bet that a well looked after FD will make more reliable power than a similarly treated Evo.

i\'ve not really got any experience with Evos, but boosting a little 2.0 litre four-pot engine that much rarely seems like a good idea.

ive got a friend (evoray on here - name says it all) who was always into evos. his dream car was an evo 6 tommi mak. he ordered one from japan but wanted something to fill the gap so he bought a lightly tuned rx7. the evo has arrived. the evo is for sale...

Just how heavy is an evo ?? The FD only weighs 1250kg with full trim. You could get that down a long way without an interior and buckets because the back seats arn\'t a huge amount of use.

I\'ve never been in an EVO so can\'t really say what its like as a driver but the FD is huge fun. Just look at the number of people who have single turbo Fd\'s and go off and buy something else only to be drawn back in when they can\'t get the same buzz.

How hard is it to get good power out of an evo ? How highly strung are they before they get tuned ?

wiki weight says 1,250–1,360 kg so similar to the FD on the bottom end.

Better off just trying to have a ride in both and making your mind up really !

Just think if you want the power it will cost £££ times as much in an evo to a FD

You want 400 atw in a FD it will cost round 3k mark. In an evo i dread to think lol. I have driven a Evo 6 Tommy edition and not impressed is an understatement. It felt like a taxi

I had a standardish FD until water seals failed.  I then went single turbo and when i sold it was running about 485bhp.  I did absolutely love it and it was blisteringly quick.  Be it the fact it blew up 3 times in 12 months (elec fault that didnt get found until the end)

I have since owned a mint red Tommi Mak evo 6, and then a white gsr that i bought with a dead engine and had norris designs fit a fully forged engine, ralli art ecu, running 1.5 bar etc.  I wacked a later evo 8 MR turbo on it to

They are completely different cars, it depends what you want it for.  I got a little bored of the evo as it was just too good a car.  It is rapid, handles very well, is so easy to drive, can take 5 people all day long and get over speed bumps still.  requires no exterior modification as it is what it is.  I dont think much could have kept with me on country roads, and i def couldnt have cornered in a rear wheel drive like i did in the evo, all year round.

But with all this in mind it didnt excited me everytime i drove it like the rex.
Think it goes down to what you are using it for, 2nd car, only car etc
where you live etc

Saying all this as i regularly drive back roads and have a kid on the way, i would love another evo as it is such a practical car.

Although neither of these cars are as fun as my R32 drift car with 2 way diff etc, that is most def the most fun car i have ever driven.

If you are not going to look after an FD then there is no point getting it mate... but I tell you that there is no comparison... i have been in Evos and they feel nothing like a Rex which is why i bought one.

When I was looking for mine, one guy was trying to flog me an Evo, going on about how you can "brake mid corner" etc... And that\'s exactly what is wrong with these cars. Anyone can get in and drive it quickly.

If you drive an RX7 well, and quickly, it\'s because YOU are doing it. Far more satisfying.

And if you get a standard twin turbo, the extra kick at 4500rpm is like cocaine.

I would enjoy any evo - they are fantastic no question.

but i would never be able to better the satisfaction of the rx7.

id sell my daily for a evo perhaps but never the rx7.

I have been in so many 4WD cars and it feels soulless... and that includes my mates Evo 6 on 1.5 bar of boost... he can\'t touch Kash\'s car he doesn\'t even bother racing Kash... in fact none of my mates do they just let him pass lol. And that\'s just on 1 bar.

in my mind there are 3 main jap supercars

Supra
RX7
Skyline

nsx is too expensive and the others are somewhat tame.

supra - sledgehammer
Rx7 - Scalpel
Skyline - in between simply but fantastic because of that

the others

300zx - too complex and costly too fix but underated
GTO - cruiser - same as 300 but looks like a wedge
sx\'s all tame - tunable but tame
evo\'s & scoobies i class in the category as they dont excite me although i think they are massive fun. Capable but tame due to lack of driver control. almost drives itself.

I think you will agree that the rx7 against all these is the clear winner looks wise & head turning capability.

although i love the rumble outta my scooby, its music to anyones ears!
but rx7 definitely the most exciting car you can drive!
but like has already been said, different car for different circumstances.
windy back road 4wd will always win but for a second car or a fun or track car youcant go wrong with a good oul rex!!

got a fd3 great fun favourite car of all time i always wanted one and am glad to say its lived up to all expectations
it all depends where your going to be driving the only thing found a lot different is driving down bad b roads the scooby is alot easier to drive faster due to being a road going rally car

But you would need 28% more power out of a supra to match a rex just taking power to weight in to account.

Would love to test drive an nsx. Seems like the purest Japanese supercar.

As has been said you need less power in a rex to match a supra. Johnny you really don\'t seem to like the rex do you mate?
Title: DILEMA! RX7 or Evo 6
Post by: Hi RX7 on April 10, 2009, 10:35:22 AM
About a year ago I was in a similar quandary my decision was the RX7 a 34GTR Skyline or an NSX. In a furious attempt to drive all 3 within 48 hours to get a reasonable comparison I drove about 200 miles, anyway I decided on the RX7 because it just felt better. Within a few weeks my RX7 went pop and I found myself throwing large amounts of money at it which also resulted in new polybushes and Tein suspension.
Now the car is run in with all the work having been done on it the cars is three times better than when I first drove it.
I have not tried the Evo\'s but what I did find with the Skyline that its roadholding was so good I found myself thinking that within a few months I would have to drive it so fast to get a buzz whereas the RX7 feels so alive and comunicative regardless of speed. I would say that every potential RX7 owner should be aware of the fact that these cars can go pop but if you have the spare money look on it as a way of getting the car exactly as you want it then ownership becomes something that always puts a smile on your face.
