Title: my rebuild thread
Post by: leeincivic on April 05, 2009, 12:43:19 PM
ola!!!

right after driving my car round on standard ports and and 470fwhp it has finally given up the ghost:( i knew it was coming but i hoped it would not be needed till next year,

anyways the other week i gave it some stick and when i cam to a stp it was running mega lumpy, it felt like it was a tractor basically! also i noticed the oil catch tank was full of water????

so i decided to go for a rebuild and started to strip the engine down
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/leeincivic/rx7%20pics/P1010730.jpg)

it was a cold night without a duvet!! haha
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/leeincivic/rx7%20pics/P1010780.jpg)

all i had was some old rope and when it got near to a good height to pull it out it started creaking!!!! was mega scary!!! haha
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/leeincivic/rx7%20pics/P1010783.jpg)

think i missed a bit when i painted the bay the other month!! haha anyways it ooooot!!!!

right on to the things i found when stripping the block (ps big thanks to lindop for getting the crank nut off:Thumbs-up)

i dropped the oil pan to find this lot along with alot of metal filings, i was baffled to say the least
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/leeincivic/rx7%20pics/P1010833.jpg)

then after some hunting when the block was totally stripped i found the offending item!! it has one in the other side but this pic shows the threaded hole where the oil pan find should be?????? anyone else had this problem????

and also one of my housings is mega fooooked!!!! (note the deep scrape? think this was casued by massive failure of the apex seals, 2 out of the 3 came out in bits!!!!

i also noticed that i was missing 1 corner seal spring and that the front rotor had 2 piece apex seals and the rear did not????

anyways feel free to help me figure out wtf went wrong?? ha:Laugh

negative ghost rider!! lol

Quote from: karl_tate;596655looking good mate, hope you find out what happened, could be a number of things though.

so what are the plans then?? :D

big vastness where money used to be, big ports, big boost, big grin haha

the plans at the min is that am gonna spend some time tryin to figure out what the hell happened and also clean everything up and get it all nice so i dont have to pick it up with 3 layers of gloves on! lol

am defo gonna take my time tho and get everything as i want it first time so its gonna be a long process me thinks, plus am gonna have to get bits as i get dollars, just hoping that my end plates are re-usable to keep some sort of costing down, the housings are knackered tho so will make a nice mantle piece item:Giggle

anyone have any ideas where i could get an oil nozzle for the ecc shaft? (the piece that ended up in the sump)
Title: my rebuild thread
Post by: karl_tate on April 06, 2009, 08:15:16 PM
stick it all in the dishwasher, although i got my dad to put mine through a shot blaster, i have a housing with a rotor inside it as a mantle piece but it didnt stay there for long :rollin

so are you going to be rebuilding it your self or getting some one to do it??

yeh, no point doing things twice, well thats the way i think anyway and non of this, that will do lol, i got a bit carried away with mine though

just ask some of the vendors for the nozzle.
Title: my rebuild thread
Post by: leeincivic on April 06, 2009, 08:20:45 PM
yeah your rebuild thread is awesome, gonna be doin a bit of a wire tuck but nothing as extreme as yours,

cant afford these at the minute like you can http://kalecoauto.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=4 haha

up to now am gonna rebuild it myself but am considerin what my options are i.e. renew parts and do it myself or buy built engine to my specs off hayward or dragon, wanting large streetport so not to easy to come by as a built block,

might just settle all my worries and bang a disease-al engine in it! haha
Title: my rebuild thread
Post by: karl_tate on April 06, 2009, 09:20:26 PM
cheers mate, its been quite a big project, was only going to replace the engine :Giggle

brass balls :rollin :rollin

i was going to rebuild it my self but then though, what am i thinking, its my first experience with rotaries. pistons engine, ok but i wanted piece of mind.

doesnt take long to strip the motor down though does it lol

DIEsel ftw :p
Title: my rebuild thread
Post by: leeincivic on April 13, 2009, 10:35:13 PM
no mate it dont, took about half hour to strip it after getting the uber tight shaft nut off, and also crap loadsa pics so i know how to put it back together,

takin some of your knowledge tho karl and am gonna be moving some of the fuse boxes from out of sight, not gonna go to the extremes as you tho coz am scared!! ha

well last week just consisted of me degreasing everything i have removed and getting it all semi clean to check for damage, borrowed a degreasing bath off my mate and what a handy bit of kit it is!!!!

started off like this
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/leeincivic/rx7%20pics/P1010993.jpg)

and finished like this after 10 mins of cleanin with a brush:chat
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/leeincivic/rx7%20pics/P1010995.jpg)

and then i have started this weekend with stripping down the engine harness coz all the old sheething (spell???) was falling to bits in my hands

started off looking like this, all covered in oil with plastic covering just snappin off
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/leeincivic/rx7%20pics/P1020001.jpg)

and ended up with this :xconfused not as bad as it looks, also removed the unused connectors from going single turbo, anyone see any connectors av left on by mistake?

oh and this is the mass of crappy oem conduit and tape etc etc that took 4 hours to rip off:Laugh

looking good mate.

what did you use to degrease everything?? has come up really well.

it goes all brittle and just falls off doesnt it, crappy stuff, i found it easier to get them all plugged in the ones i needed and then just chopped the rest out but having the loom laid out would of been an easier approach lol

haha yeah it is really crappy stuff when ya start pickin it out eh!! i was however to stupid and keen to rip the engine out that i forgot to mark everything up that was not connected! haha

as for the degreaser i got it off me mate and it was already full so unsure what he filled it with, it does however smell very very similar to that gunk engine degreaser:yes

i used a company with good recommendation from karl on his rebuild thread^^^^ (cheers matey :Giggle)

http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/sleeving/sleeving.php#conv

its got absolutely everything that you could possibly need, i am just gonna use the flexible convoluted tubing as hopefully once its all back in it will never ever come back out thus never notice problems caused by heat lol

Post by: leeincivic on April 18, 2009, 07:42:06 PM
yeah sods law innit, ha

well i had a lil go at removing the 2ndry butterflies then ran out of dremel bits so got it to this point! haha

from this
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/leeincivic/rx7%20pics/P1020018.jpg)

to this :evillaugh
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/leeincivic/rx7%20pics/P1020024.jpg)

then on thursday i recieved a nice package full of the sheething to finish my engine loom up, did not know how much of each size i needed so i order 2 meters of every size! haha

now the loom looks like this:) just need to go over the lot with insulation tape and its done, all chopped and wrapped neatly but will see if i have to butcher it again when it goes back onto the engine, bound to of not done it right first time, its not in my nature!  think the injector resistors look ace so got them out the conduit to show em off a bit! ha

still little by little doin a bit everyday, might be on hold for couple weeks now tho coz am sortin the side of the house up to get a carport built up so i can work on it whenever i want and not jus when the weather is good and its daylight

oh and big thanks to kash for the dragon gearbox mount when it comes:god
Title: my rebuild thread

few more things done today:p

give some parts to a bloke with a nickname of \'god\'!! and tell ya what a spot on bloke and good and fast at welding, said he would fab up anythin i want too so keep him in mind, had him weld up all various things like the old coolant and vacuum nipples from when i have gone single, looked cack with pipes everywhere with bolts stuck in em to blank em!! pics show how i got them off him but av since blended everything in, good old dremel!!

anyways heres the pics

blanked coolant holes
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/leeincivic/rx7%20pics/P1020052.jpg)

lim were it used to have vacuum nipples
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/leeincivic/rx7%20pics/P1020054.jpg)

uim, used to be vacuum nipples there so there did:Giggle
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/leeincivic/rx7%20pics/P1020056.jpg)

also notice on this housing that i have butchered it and cut off the bracket that the air pump used to bolt to, i remember the big tub sitting very very close to this so off with its head!!! ha
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/leeincivic/rx7%20pics/P1020060.jpg)

uim with the holes welded up where the 2ndry butterflies used to be and also give it a quick clean up to smooth it all out nice,
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/leeincivic/rx7%20pics/P1020064.jpg)

just dunno what to do next!! bit stuck at the minute with lack of funds to start rebuilding the block so think i may jump in the engine bay and sort the wiring out and tuck it like a pre op tranny!!! lol:Thumbsup!

Hey lee you could help us with mine lol, Like the idea of getting rid of the bits that you dont need in the bay. i was thinking of sawing off the air pump bracket too. I have just had some guy weld up a massive crack in my oil feed, wonder if its the same guy.

Can i buy some of that spare wire surround off you?

long time no post:Laugh

been well busy lately sorting some stuff out so have not even touched the car, bit gutting like but i have made it a new home so i can finally get some work done whether night or rain :)

so work begins today in theory haha

going to start pulling the engine bay loom tomorrow to start re wrapping it as its an absolute mess and also got another towing loop from driftworks that i am goin to fit to the rear,

anyways here is my recent handy work, not bad cost considering what i have done, paint the house, pvc fascias, soffits, guttering, cladding, weld/build and put up carport and roof, fit day makers in the roofline all for no more than £500, bargain!!! haha

bit of a random post but all adds up to more rebuild working time! woop woop!!:Giggle

damn karl_tate haha reading his build thread has given me a big kick up the a-hole to get mine done haha
Title: my rebuild thread
Post by: karl_tate on June 16, 2009, 09:36:37 PM

Title: my rebuild thread
Post by: leeincivic on June 16, 2009, 10:40:26 PM
gonna get the bay painted better and also look at tuckin a few relays/fuse boxes, nothin as extreme as yours coz i simply dont have the balls haha, but before i do that am trying to find some r-magic style headlights so i know where exactly i can tuck everythin, anyone have any?

then av got loadsa ideas like atomic rex pedal set so that will get rid of the brake master cyclinder and also few other bits and bobs then its a case of the engine then, just waiting on the job situation at the minute before i go mad and blow all my money on it, :Thumbsup!
Title: my rebuild thread
Post by: leeincivic on June 20, 2009, 08:09:39 PM
well av been bored so done a few bits, painted behind where the lights are gonna sit (could see slight bit of red down the bonnet gaps) and also fitted a driftworks tow loop to match the front as i have never trusted them tiny loops they come with as stock, also made all new brackets under the car for the diffuser to lift it up more coz now and then it would scrape the floor and am wantin to lower it a bit more too, took ages to do them but lifted it up a good 1.5 inch so well chuffed:Laugh

lets face it when its all finished and i get it to a track day am bound to ditch it in the gravel and need towing out haha

yeah karl its a mare alright, went through nearly 3 rolls of maskin tape lol i feel your pain on painting the bay haha

dropped my lights off at the paintshop todsay to get painted so said they should be done for next week coz he is uber busy,

news on the engine is still a static one, took it all out the cardboard boxes as i noticed a small bit of surface rust coz i degreased the lot, so bought i big plastic storagethingy and flad the lot in wd40 :D

i am dying to get it back on the road tbh but funds are stoppin me at the min, yet again why dont no rotary boys do finance? haha, am still unsure what can be re-used etc so need to start lookin into it, also i kinda forgot i need a new clutch and flywheel so gotta start lookin for the way to go??

also i have been looking at the exedy hyper twin clutch but is the os giken the best/cheaper option to go for or looking around the same cost?

regards to trotter i cant really see it looking nice with the lights stayin that colour, it looks like an after thought i reckon, like dame edna lighting haha

fitted a dragon gearbox brace so av managed to get rid of the bit of wood holding it up haha i did notice while i was under the car the adjustable arms are totally different on each side???? could this of been a cause of my car tramlining over bumps, white lines etc? clearly needs setting up tho,

anybody used these guys heard they are ace? http://www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk/

made up some new brake and clutch lines at the weekend which am made up with :)

Hey lee car looks really nice, just missing an engine, haha. I believe your gonna give us a hand removing my abs,  in a few weeks? And if you think of upgrading your brakes to bigger ones, i\'ll be intrested in purchasing yours.

hnmmm im sure there are plenty of people who would argue about brens niceness...

coming from having a 200sx and falling four buying his cheap quality products then having them ALL fail...

anyway back on topic, your car looks stunning and really makes me want to strip mine and do the same but i need a garage first lol! and a second car...

yeah not a problem mate, just dont offer any warranty against my work haha, kav did mention about the brakes, might just look for 356mm disks and brackets for the min but will keep my options open, cheers dude

he is one of the biggest sellers for 200sx stuff, however problem is he buys all of his "apex performance" stuff from cheap factories in china, which at the end of the day isnt a huge problem however he then slags off other companies that sell exactly the same product for less money and says "well they are cheap chinese coppies" when i had my 200 i got fooled and purchased stuff off of him, and quickly learnt how stupid i was, exhaust system (turbo back) coilovers, god knows what else, which i then had to replace over and over, because they were so bad!

which is why with my rx7 im saving before i buy stuff, i learnt buy cheap buy twice... unless your getting a bargain on stuff like i just did with a power fc lol! and i can understand things like buying xs power intercoolers to make your own vmounts out of... and i will go that route i just dont like brens attitude and the way he works...

fair enough i will take your word for it, never dealt with him before but know he is big in the 200 world so thought he was the person to go to, when i went up there to get the lights his stock is massive so yeah he prob does buy it all from china otherwise the unit would be full of millions of pounds worth of gear,

my only quarm with him is that i asked if he could get an exedy clutch and flywheel cheaper than the £1100 i have seen them for and he said he would email me a price, the email he sent me said that he could not and offered me carbonetics one at £1500 plus vat, i did ask for a CHEAPER price than the exedy haha

still happy with the lights he gave me but will take your words on board :Thumbsup!

screamer exits just behind the front drivers wheel matey, mine at the minute was only around 5 inches long and pointed straight towards the ground, hopefully there will be enough room to get it exiting out of a hole in the skirts :p

yeah i wanted a stand out colour but could not find one so i got the red, score!! haha, just waiting for a vht clear lacquer to turn up to get it nice and smooth and fingers crosser easier to clean if i need to, :3Confused

now to figure out where to mount the swirl pot and pump, ideas???
Title: my rebuild thread
Post by: karl_tate on September 13, 2009, 11:06:56 PM
looks good and i know people do put them in the boot etc but the only place i would put another pump and a swirl pot is under the car. if you get the car in the air and have a look next to where the fuel filter is mounted, on the passengers side, there is a charcoal canister. great place to mount but its just there is little room to work.

btw where did you get the carpet from, looks cool.
Title: my rebuild thread
Post by: leeincivic on September 14, 2009, 11:10:34 PM
yeah i have seen a few there, dont reworx make a tank to sit under ther??? whats the purpose of the charcoal canister anyways??

yeah the only reason i am going for the boot is for ease and also i am going to get another pump now too so would be harder to stash 2 pumps! haha

the carpet is good old halfrauds acoustic cloth, dont make the mistake i did and buy just their black cloth coz when i got home i realised it was different to the acoustic stuff i covered around the battery in, plus its fluffy haha

lee ada7 is the guy to talk to about polishing, you need a polishing kit with abbrasive mops, that will get out all the casting marks first.... then you polish to get a mirror finish...

i got my bench grinder from some little hardware shop it was like 27quid lol, really is worth it, but it is a messy dirty job... oh and wear a mask, i know it seems like a pointless exercise but i my nose was burning and didnt know why lol, alloy particles up your nose hurts and burns and comes out black when u blow it lol!

Cheapest place to get a bench grinder from is to \'borrow\' one from a guy at work and hope he forgets for a while :rollin Failing that have a look on ebay for a 2nd hand one or Machine Mart (other companies are avalible :p)
If you get that kit Malice has put the link to then just follow the steps and take as much time as you can. For hard to get to areas you have to either use a dremmel or get you hands really dirty and use sandpaper. Starting at the low number and working up. Then polish the hell out of it :D

Dont really use it that much in winter:(
Forced myself to use it the other night to test my new lights and almost lost the back end:o bit to eager in damp conditions so will have to wait until spring

I think im right in saying it spools the turbo quicker aswell. Im now seeing full boost by 4400 rpm.

What you going to be using the car for? and what boost you planning to run it at?
Title: my rebuild thread
Post by: leeincivic on November 16, 2009, 10:45:01 PM
mainly road but the occasional track/drag blast, unsure of what boost i am goin to be running yet coz got loads to sort till it comes to that, i am puttin the best i can on in every way so i can handle higher boost if needed during mapping, know what i mean?

end of the day last thing i need is to pt my foot down on the street and end up backwards round a roundabout haha

if you polish the mani\'s etc up nice take it to a powdercoat place they can do clear powdercoat and will leave it looking mega shiney, the powdercoat gives it an extra deep shine too.
