Title: Turbo fitting
Post by: jetpilot on April 05, 2009, 11:32:35 AM
I am having difficulty getting my single turbo bolted down enough to stop it blowing, any idea on how tight the nuts have to be and best ways to do it, theres just so little space to get spanners on there to make really tight!

Use some silacone sealant between each mating face and gaskets and then the nuts do have to be tight as with any exhaust. Make sure your gasket is in good shape as well as checking that the flanges your turbo bolts too are not warped in any way and that they are the correct size and shape for your turbo.

Thank you, its a brand new gasket and manifold is good and turbo new so should be no problems there. May try the sealant route although i dont fancy its intergrity at those temps?

I recently fitted a Single for some one, i had a similar problem. what i did was ran the nuts up and down the threads (with the turbo off) a few times with a bit of Copper slip on, then i cleaned the mating faces (including round the Studs) until it was spotless, fitted the gasket and wound the nuts on with my figures until they where down then finished off with a spanner (pain in the rear), best bit is it turned out to be the Waste gate gasket under the Turbo that made it sound like the Turbo :(

After i did all this i was told by a mate it proberly would have been easier to take the hot side of the Turbo, fit it then replace the turbo into the Turbine housing. But even though it would give better access to the stud/nuts i thought that may also be a royal PITA

Its definately not the wastegate as you can see the where its blowing by the gases escaping. Taking off the hotside will still leave one nut very difficult to get too, the problem one.

Just out of interest, the thin metal gasket you get has a pressed in ridge, which way should this be, ridge underside (into manifold), or ridge facing up, if you know what i mean.

I don\'t think it matters?? i fitted it with the raised part up but i wouldn\'t like to lay money on it being correct. Doesn\'t blow now though so it can\'t be that dramatic.

Some recent advise has also suggested removing metal gasket and using just silicone sealant. Knowing the temps involved how come it just doesnt melt away??

P.S Not doubting the advise as it comes from on high, just very surprised thats all.
