Title: FD Fronts
Post by: Skifledanabit on April 01, 2009, 06:05:35 PM
Ok, on the interchangable items thread it says that FD front calipers and pads fit the FC, now, does that also mean that the discs fit as well? Would the full FD front brake swap be best choice?

only the pads and calipers fit. From what i understand its a pointless change as they don\'t improve braking as they are pretty much the same thing. The main advantage is that they are newer and less prone to seizing, you\'d be better off refurbing the standard ones

ah okay, are there any swaps that would prove effective?

Are the disks not bigger as well?
The FC disks coupled with FD calipers is a simple and cheap option and will most likely be ample enough for what the engine can produce, obviously if this is going round a track then a bit different. I do see a difference in my brakes comparing my white and orange cabs, the FD calipers on the orange one do seem to be far better even though they are very similar in sizes but I also have braided lines and vented/drilled disks which help but ebven from cold the bite is better. ( I think i am using the same pads)  Think its just the efficiency of them thats better and as stated less prone to siezing than FC ones, which they will if not looked after

Check out the EVO brake swap on the rx7club.com - both discs and calipers fit with a little work.

Having said that, a lot of people ditch the FC brake system, when all it probably needed was a good overhaul - even changing all the brake fluid an doing a proper bleed, with new pads and discs can make a massive improvement.  Go for aftermarket pads/discs and it improves again.

I run Black Diamond discs / Hawk pads and have seen a massive improvement over the stock brakes.  I\'ve also rebuilt the rear calipers - and will be doing my front\'s soon as well.

I totally agree with Prof in the overhaul of standard items, I can vouch as well that this is a massive improvement when you think that yours have not been overhauled in 20 years.  I never replaced my seals as they were ok but took the pistons out, good clean and put back together the difference with totally new fluid in the system was an outstanding difference. Think you can rebuild the fronts for about £35

I overhauled mine to and although i have just down a 2 min run down my road the difference after an overhaul, bleed and new oil is much much better, i have standard pads axxis i think with drilled and grooved discs.

Same PCD (5x114.3) - but the offsets for standard wheels are different.  So stock FD rims will catch on the calipers if not spaced I believe.

It\'s worth noting that some brake upgrades won\'t fit behind a standard 16" wheel.
