Anyone know what level of boost on a rotary is safe??
My car is very highly modded so can handle more than most, but does anyone have a level they think is safe??
I thought it was ~14 psi unless you had some serious engine work (dowelling, ceramic seals) done. I mgiht be wrong thoguh and that might be the limits of the stock turbos.
hello
the higher your boost levels, the more fuel you need to get in so i\'d have a chat with a specialist before upping the boost and running lean!:)
tom
The amount of boost all depends on the build and the state of tune.
You can run very high boost on a very HIGHLY MODDED ROTARY ENGINE but it must be very well tuned and the more you run the less time it will last.
Kind regards
Carl
It all comes down to the person mapping it. Make sure that they know what they are doing, otherwise leave it stock.

Thanks for the replies guys, basically the cars pretty well modded to say the least, the engine is street ported running a T-78 turbo with upgraded radiator/intercooler , hard pipe system and so forth, you say 14psi, whats that on the bar system ie:1.1bar??
1 bar is 14.7 psi.
That means that the engine if it is running that air pressure is in actuality running at around 28 PSI of boost including natural air pressure,so the 14.7 psi is 14.7 psi over natural air pressure.
The zero on most boost guages shows where natural air pressure is.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards
Carl
not forgetting the power FC Gurj

What fuel system do you have Gurj? what injectors and pump? What boost do you run?

No idea:confused:
Normally i dont run more than 0.9bar just to be safe:(
Carl,
you mentioned that 1 bar is 14.7, i have always heard conflicting stories, my profec instructions state 1 bar is 14.2 psi, but i have heard others say it 14.7, can you clear this up once and for all please.........

tony
14.2 is measured in kilogram/centimeter2
the above measurement is what most jap boost gauges and boost controllers are reading in which is very close to measurements in bar but not the same.
cheers for that brian, if that is the case, does the apexi commander read in bar or kilogram/centimeter2?
Power FC is the same; reads kg/cm2.
does anyone have a conversion table of some kind that they could post with Bar, psi and kg/cm2?
it would make life a lot easier when i\'m trying to work out what boost i am actually running.
regards
tony
1 bar is 14.5 psi under boost.
1 bar atmosphere is 14.7psi
1kg/mm is 14.22psi.;)
Try this....

1 bar on standard turbo\'s correctly mapped is about the limit - before you run into problems with boost spike\'s, creep etc.
A larger turbo is able to produce a larger volume of air, so a T78 on 1bar will produce more power, hence you need more fuel and more stress is caused to the engine i.e. dowelling is a good idea.
Mapping is very important - along with many other things to make it all work and stay together.

Oh - and to answer the question directly, only your engine builder/tuner can answer this question. If they are all bolt ons to even a modified engine you won\'t get anywere unless you have someone with the skills to tune it to a high but safe level.
Your car has to have the correct: fuel system requirements, ECU, mapping (with the proper tools/equipment), apex seals, etc. I wouldn\'t even think about increasing the boost until you had those things in place. And the obvious - once these things are in place get it to a RR, spend lots of time tuning it correctly as per above.
Rotaries can run up to 45psi of boost with large turbo\'s producing amazing amounts of power, but only with the right goodies and knowledge in doing it all.
heres a good site for future boost pressure conversions

hundreds of others too:)

And the right fuel, often the really hi HP engines are running methanol.

Thanks for all info guys really appreciate it:)
I dont actually intend to race the car or anything but like to know the limitations just in case, so far ran the car at 1.0bar just to see and it seems fine at that running to 7000rpm\'s also been checking the knock reading so far not moved off 1, so thats pretty good unless its not working:rollin :rollin
But thanks for all the info:wave
