Title: Headlight Positions
Post by: Skifledanabit on March 26, 2009, 02:46:37 PM
I was watching a video where the sidelights next to the indicators are on but the headlights themselves aren\'t up, also, where can I find a how to or something on how to turn the lights on without the headlights popping up?

well to do it legally... buy an import

though i was looking into doing this, i looked at the circuit diagrams in the haynes manual and its actually pretty simple, so my dad says. Not sure on light regulations an if it would pass as mot though so i left it.

edit: also they stay down if you dont have the engine running i think

hmm.... well, from what I can gather, when you flash the main beams (pull the indicator lever back) they flash through the covers between the lights and front indicators, sooooo... shouldnt you be able to bypass the motor from the main light control on the dash, and just use the manual control above the main one? I hope I\'ve made myself clear on this.

oh so you want the head light motors to be controlled separately to the lights? Sounds like an idea. Though i think theres a chance you could run into problems with heat if you have the lights on dipped beam with the headlights down. I think it would be more simple to get the lights to stay down when the sidelights are on. Though at the end of the day it depends what you want. I wanted it so i could have the dash lights on without the headlights up, as im sure they slow the car down a lot for motorway driving. Though mr2\'s look awesome with the headlights down and the lights on

I guess, well you know the switch above the main headlight switch? you can put the lights up and down without actually switching them on? maybe use that switch just for putting them up and down and the main light switch just for turning them on, so you can drive along with your headlights on through the front lenses... so yeah, basically a motor control switch I guess

The headlights come on when the sidelights are selected only when the ignition switch is on - this is the so called \'dip dim\' circuit that was put in for European model cars.

Defeating that circuit is fairly simple - you need to locate a small grey relay under the glovebox - it has about 6 connections going to it - unplug it - and voila - sidelights selected on the switch will not raise the headlights any more.

As for controlling the headlight motors seperately to the lights - a bit more difficult as both are controlled by the headlight switch.  You could mess with the wiring at the front - there is a relay to control headlight motors, and also two that work the headlights / main beam.  On UK cars, when you flash main beam the headlight motors don\'t operate and the headlights shine through the \'Flash to Pass\' or FTP lenses.  Import moels don\'t have this function.

If you want to put the headlights on without raising the motors just for show - I wouldn\'t recommend driving like that - then remove the \'Retractor\' 30A fuse from the engine bay fuse box - it\'s the one on the end - before putting on the lights.  You can also use the manual winders under the car to get a sleepy eye look if you must - but don\'t operate those knobs with the fuse in - or you\'ll lose skin for sure !! :2eek

After just flashing over the thread the \'sleepy eye\' mod will allow this

means you can lock the lights wherever you want, but they will still operate as normal

depends how you want it to work.

my TII has shorter headlight arms, or you can buy a kit so you can set it all up differently, or you can use some electronic trickery

I would like to be able to set it up in 3 different positions, so shortening the arms wouldnt work, what electronic gadgetry can i do?

if you wanna set different positions (you mean different heights right?) your best best is getting one of these kits off the bay. There was a thread a few months back about one. Though i think you have to reset it each time, but you could set the lights to any height which i presume includes beeing all the way down with the lights on. Don\'t know about the connecter im afraid

anyone got any ideas where this grey connector is? i looked under and behind the glovebox and couldn\'t find anything...? got any pictures?

It\'s not the connector that\'s grey - just the relay it plugs into.

It\'s about 2"x1" by 2" high - and has a clip on it - don\'t know where it clips onto, as mine was just dangling - but the wiring seems to come from behind the glovebox.

I will see if I can find my old relay unit that I took off and pop a piccy up.

I found my notes on the dip-dim relay, but fogot to take the picture of the wire harness behind the glove box.

The dip-dim relay has 6 connectors - labelled a,b,c,d,f and g.  a and g are on one row with 2 gaps in the centre, and b-f are in line in the other row:

a - - g
b c d f

The wires colours / pin / function is as follows:

(a)  Black  -  Ground wire
(b)  Black/Green - Headlights - this pin is at 12 Volts until the light switch is fully on
(c)  Red / Black - Sidelights - this pin is at 12 Volts when the lights swtch is set to either position
(d)  Black/Red - Ignition - this is at 12 Volts when ingition is on
(f)  Yellow/Green - Retractor - This pin is connected to ground via a diode and relay and connects to the retractor relay at the front of the car - it drives the relay on and also powers the dip-dim relay to connect the headlights to 12 Volts via the resistor on the drivers side on the wheel arch in front of the shock tower (under standard air filter)
(g)  Yellow/Green - Lights - This pin is also connected to ground via another diode and the same relay as above - it\'s isolated from the (f) pin by the diodes - I haven\'t the foggiest what this does.

So what can you do with this info ?

(d) is a source of 12v power switched via the ignition key - that might be useful.
(c) is on when lights are on
(b) is grounded when headlights are on
(f) is perhaps the most useful of these - if you connect this wire to the ground then you will raise the headlights and they will also come on dimly - if you want to just raise them and not have them come on - then you need to disconnect the dip-dim resistor.  However, that function is already provided by the maintenance switch on the light switch cluster.

okay, thanks for the info so far, but i want to keep the headlights down whilst the sidelights are on as well as the engine... will this dip/dim connector/relay removal achieve this?

Yep - just unplug it and the main lights will stay down and off when sidelights only are selected
