Title: Hello! New to RX-7s
Post by: loomx on March 21, 2009, 10:54:08 AM
Hi all,

Just wanted to say Hi, im completely new to Rx\'s.

Im looking at buying one to replace my current car, some guy in a black ford focus forced me off the road and its not in the best of states (It was a Audi S4 outputting 497.5 bhp)

I have always had a BIG soft spot for FD\'s I think the looks are just timeless. I have never been in one myself though, I was wondering if there are any mini meets in the oxfordshire area, or anyone in this area would be willing to take me out for a passenger ride.

What sort of power output should I be aiming for in an FD to get a similar pull as I did in the S4 (S4 weighed in at around 1600kg) and I managed a 0-60 of 3.8 seconds.

Think you would be looking single turbo and about 400bhp to get the same kick. might get away with a little less, but not 100% don\'t forget it\'s all to the happy end of the car, so things will be a little scetchy compaird to the 4x4 audi on initial take off ;)

dam, that audi sounds like a barge. You\'re going to love the FD.

Think jono is right, 400 sounds about right, though you may struggle with that 0-60 time as the audi is 4wd, but should be pretty similar afterwards :D

Welcome along Loomx. Seen your car a few times on the Audi forums. I still run my MTM\'d RS6 but am also building a RX7 for some trackday fun. Good luck with your search.

Yeh im thinking I might try and fix the S4, and the save up and get an RX7 for some track day fun too. All depends on how the engine is in the S4.

Im going to look at an RX7 on friday! its a single turbo :)

Any major things I need to look out for, Im pretty sure I have an idea on what to look out for now, check for easy start up on cold and warm starts, usual stuff like smoke, sludge and so on.
Im assuming because its a single turbo vacuum hoses and the like will be less complicated so easier to look at.
Is there any links on how to perform the champaign test?
Is it worth getting a compression check done also, where abouts in birmingham can I get one done?

champagne test is easy! just start it up with the coolant filler cap off and watch for bubbles. there are a couple of good example vids on YouTube.

if it\'s a cold day don\'t be put off by a little smoke, they tend to belch out a thick white cloud when the weather is chilly. as long as it stops after a few minutes it\'s fine.

compression test is well worth it as it will let you know the overall health of the engine, there\'s a way of doing it yourself with a standard compression tester, you just need to pull a valve off somewhere (someone who has actually done this can probably be a bit more useful!). alternatively there\'s the quick and dirty pull all the plugs out, turn it over and listen for the three "phttt"s method!

Cool, the car has a rebuild done about 2000 miles ago by WGT, so all should be okay, I think i will try and get a compression test done anyway, is it okay to get a mazda dealer to do this, or should even this only be entrusted to the specialist. How much does it usually cost?

Im getting all excited now lol.
