Title: LED\\Dash lights
Post by: a.tapos on March 12, 2009, 09:36:36 PM
Just curious to see if anybody else has led dash lights, mine come with a seperate button to trigger them and they light up brilliantly.
quite temperamental though.

Had them on my first car, were ok sometimes, bitch to see others.

Red\'s about the best colour, blue the worst tbh. And the light is more focused with LEDs than bulbs so you get brightspots.

i had leds and indiglow dials but the speedo gave up the ghost a few months back so i put a new set of 97 clocks in, without the indiglo dials. They will be put on ebay soon.
You can get wide angle diffuse 12v leds specifically for dials that reduce hotspots, check out ebay sellers.

hi mate,
Any luck with the pics? I\'m quite keen to do something to brighten up my dash while it\'s off. Does anyone have a link for the wide angle LEDs?

Cheers,
Mark

i have used this ebay seller three or four times, always has the newest wierd leds. Very rapid delivery, but you might be able to find them cheaper. If you want red ones, i have a load you can buy off me if you want? I\'ve gone green!

same as these but red

The 1W wedge jobs are super-bright, great for replacing the interior lights (and exterior ones!!)but might get a bit warm for the dash i think

So do the red ones actually illuminate the dash alright? Red sounds good but i don\'t know if it will be bright enough tbh. And will it have \'hotspots\' if it\'s not wide angled?
Is it just the 4 x main wedge LEDs that you replace?

i replaced the main four with those red ones and it was better, but still not super-bright, thats why i put the indiglo dials in instead. I was a definite cheap improvement though

Right ive finally got pics of the dials apart, the feed and earth go directly into the face of the dials, how cool is this, think an aussie ebay company does a similar thing

Any body got any more info?
It has a small relay/resistor pack with it i think that may be the reason they dont work:3Confused

oh and im after a standard cluster if anybodies got one

Post by: ashc on April 16, 2009, 11:18:36 PM
your indiglos look like the same as mine i think.
i have a cluster spare but the speedo is broken and the rev counter is a bit intermittent. i was going to use it for a project replacing the dials with defi eqivalents but don\'t want to spend the money on it at the mo, is that sort of what you\'re after?

Yes i think thats them,do you know where there from?
well i just want the black covers which are easy to change,it would save me mucking about, would you want to sell the covers or the cluster im quite happy to have either if you still want to keep the guages themselves id only throw the rest anyway,it would be easier to post the covers too, thanks, andy

i have the same dials, when i first installed them i ran them from the standard lamp supply, this can be dimmed by the switch lhs of steering wheel. i found that if i dipped them slightly the dials would not work or just switch off at random intervals.

Oh thats a top idea i didnt even think of that i was running around at work yesterday looking for resistors and didnt even consider using the one already on the car good work
Ill have to try it this week,i know leds are really sensitive to voltage, too much or too little and they dont work
Just out of interest can you still buy them?

i dont know if you can still buy them tbh, i was given them a while ago for doing some work to my mates car.

Wow, these are super bright! Very nice. Is this a whole new unit then? Or have you replaced the bulbs and dials?? I\'m so confused! :2Confused lol

They are, but the dimmer still works, so you can knock the brightness down.
I basically disassembled the cluster, removed the tinting, and fitted white LED\'s.
It was the biggest ballache ever :(

Oh right. I had my dash out recently for spraying so I\'m pretty dapper at getting it out now. Is it that hard? I\'m quite keen to upgrade them somehow. Would you advise agaist doing it your way then? How hard is it to remove the tinting?

there is a good thread on rx7club about it - some people sand them with 1500+ grit, others use superglue remover and peel the old one off. Best to experiment a bit!

That looks really good. I originally wanted white gauges on mine but thought it might be easier to modify the standard black ones.

How are your 3 gauges mounted near the glove box? Could you take a closer picture or two for me please? -My dash has a small rip in it above the glove box so i need to do something and really want to make something to have gauges there.

Thanks mate,
Mark

i had the same problem, someone had drilled some hole\'s above my glove box and i didn\'t want any dials on top of the dash or on the pillar so came up with the idea. i got the guy who works on the car to make it up.....
i dont have the car at the moment as im away, but heres another one for you....
there angled so i can see them from my driving position easier

Nice work mate. Looks good. I\'m currently trying to fabricate a dual gauge holder to go in place of the centre dash vent. I\'ll let you know how it goes!
I\'ll probably get onto the ones above the glove box after that. What are your gauge holders made of?

Just noticed that you\'ve got the same gear knob as me. Although my lights have decided to only come on when you push the top down! If it\'s not one thing it\'s another!! lol :)

yeah, i unplugged the light for my gear knob as it was to bright. the only adjustment is on the dash and if i dim it, the dials are a bit to dark...annoying!
the actual casing\'s are made out of aluminum and then covered in suede.
why the center dash vent, are you going to use the car for track or something?
