Title: White smoke
Post by: ashwhite on March 07, 2009, 08:33:21 PM
Eventually got my fd3 started after it being flooded, took out spark plugs, removed the edi fuse and turned it over for about 15 seconds.I then cleaned the spark plugs and replaced them, and it started fine. Took it for a long drive, and then went home. I left it for half hour and i tried starting it again. I had trouble starting it again, but it went eventually, but this was then followed by lots of white smoke (and i mean lots) out of the exhaust. Does anyone know what this could be?

Sounds like waterseal failure = Engine rebuild Get a video up on youtube or photobucket

yeah. How much is a lot?

When mine went it had flooded as well. When started, the smoke was pouring out the rear! Heaps of the stuff!! A lot more than the normal cold morning kind of smoke.

A few mins later the coolant was being forced out the expansion bottle.

Does sound like waterseal failure. Smell the exhaust smoke, if it smells sweet, it\'s not a good sign.

On a plus note, I rebuilt mine only spending £300 or so.

more smoke than I\'ve ever seen come oh of an exhaust, it filled the road with smoke. Don\'t seem to be losing water though.

Water seal failure looks like this:

Though that wasn\'t water seal failure, one of the castings had broken and was letting water onto the rotors. Same symptoms, different cause. Didn\'t seem to be losing much water either, and could create a nice smokescreen when it fired.

Will be hard to start, but then run fine, sometimes even better than normal oddly enough on the motorway etc.

i had same prob and same smoke as FDAsh and mine is rebuild time.
maybe worth trying k-seal in it, depending where the leak is it might work.

If the engine is low mileage and the hard seals are ok (sideseals, apex seals) they can all be reused along with the springs. The only thing you *Have* to replace is the soft seals which cost about £130 for the set and a few other things like gaskets, main oil seals etc

Wheels are changing soon I think, possibly exhaust too. Oh, and new rear bumper is being picked up on Thursday, no more foglight abortion
