Post by: bobmac on March 07, 2009, 04:35:38 PM
Hi guys hope someone can help coming home last week, and the car seemed to lose all coolant from under the bonnet, stopped it straight away and when i lifted the bonnet no rad cap ( well the top bit but no rubber seal type thingy) rang a mate who popped down with an old Nissan rad cap ( rated 0.9 bar) since then the car seems to run @ 90 instead of 80 as it did previously,( running a g reddy temp gauge) do i have the wrong rated top, if so what  what should it be ? any hel[p much appreciated in advance guys :cool

hey mate are we talking fd or fc? fd main filler cap isn\'t spring loaded, only the ast cap is (rated at 0.9bar on fd). maybe a faulty cap? try a new cap specifically for yourt car.

On the FD you can run a spring loaded cap on both filling point & AST if you want to, as the filler neck on the thermastat housing doesn\'t have anywhere for the water to go when it opens at .9 bar ;) but if it threw water out, then quite possibly you have a slight air lock in the system as a result & it it throwing your temps up a touch.

cheers for the quick replies guys. forgot to say its on a FD, so 0.9 bar rating is OK, if i run the engine up to operating temp without the cap on would this help to bleed out the possible air lock ?:)

No what you need to do is take the small water pipe to the throttle body off by the bulkhead, then fill it up till water starts to trickle out of the undone pipe, then wack it back on & it should be all good ;)

do you mean top up into the throttle body until water appears from the pipe, sorry for being so dumb mate:) is the coolant pipe at the throttle body on the right hand side of the engine as your looking from the front, near where the top intercooler pipe goes into it?:)

Nearly matey.... pop the bonnet up, & stand by the front left wheel. infront of you you (working towards you) will have the UIM, throttle body, then the intake elbow. on the right hand side coming out of the throttle body you will see a ruber pipe about 12mm diamiter, undo the pipe clamp & pop the pipe off the throttle body. now take the rad cap off the thrmostat housing (just to the left of the aulternator) and simply top up the coolant there untill it starts to trickle out the pipt you took of the throttle body. might be worth over filling it a little allowing about 1/4 litre to come out of the throttle body pipe, just to make sure ;)
