Title: Need some help with the MOT
Post by: m1tch on March 06, 2009, 10:13:26 PM
Hey guys, I have my MOT for the RX this thursday, I have checked the CO levels and they are at 0.9%, so thats ok (I still have the air pump in)

The problem I have is when I checked around the car I found a rust hole :( its on the front passenger side, I have taken some photos, it seems really square so im not sure if its an issue. On the last MOT there was no advisories, and this seems to have been there for a while now.

It seems that some of the underseal has come off just there and its rusted, everywhere else on the car is fine, I have posted some photos:

(sorry they aren\'t hugly clear, its difficult to get to!)

Is this defined as \'structual\'? When my boost controller was put in we had the carpets up and there wasn\'t any hole to be seen there, must be right in one corner or something.

Where abouts is this hole - is it within 12" of A B or C pillars or seat mounts or seatbelt tie ?

It seems, when I put my finger inside its part of the box section of the Chassis rail, just part of the bottom of the box section has rusted though due to the lack of underseal, its a really square hole though, thats whats so wierd lol do you think I should conceal this for the MOT? Although, last MOT there was no advisories or any notes about it at all.

If you look at the side of the car, its a few inches behind the arrow on the front spats where the jacking point is :( I bet its going to be an MOT fail :(

I think it needs a plate welding in - you\'d be looking at no more than £200 for someone to do that - probably less as it looks smallish.

But don\'t leave it - it\'s unlikely to pass with that because of where it is.

Ok, my road tax will probably run out and I will have to SORN the RX as well until I can get it sorted :(

Is there anyway I should perhaps try and cover it over so it will pass then I will have time to sort it?

Why wasn\'t something like this on my last MOT? :(

i would take a chipping hammer and give a good hiding right back to the strong metal as i found a small hole and it ended up the whole way up the side of the chassis rail, and i would weld 1.5-2mm plater over it prime and paint it then wire brush the hole underneath and use a waxcoyl/stonechip mix(to water it down) in a spray bottle and give everything a good few coats. maybe a coat every 15mins and about 4 coats.

as colin said - if you think its a hole - then you may aswell find out :(

i started off with 5 small holes - by the time i got back to good metal - i had found that i had no inner and outer sills :(

IMHO that\'s a structural fail. As Prof (as always when he\'s bloodx well posted 1st!), a welding jobbie needs to be arranged.

thats where mine went aswell - it looks like the front jacking point

mine was soo weak - it just fell apart

welding is easy - its the prep work

carpet up - trim out - ecu protected ( not sure how close it is ) etc...

Sorry :o - was just on line at the time the post came in :Giggle

Still - advice from you or Grinder is well worth regarding in this area - glad you still posted - I know M1tch and he might think I wasn\'t giving him the full picture.

I don\'t think this is a showstopper - if he get\'s it sorted properly and soon, the car can live on for years to come.

My other half had some major welding on her zed - all 4 corners and 1 sill - and that was only £600 all in - flew through the MOT no probs.

Yip it is quite soul destroying hacking away at the inner sills and seeing the inside of the cars frame :(

whats more soul destroying is hacking the inner sill and then seeing your feet !! LOL :D

best bet mitch - get underneath with a wire brush and give it some stick

you will have a better idea then

and then give everywhere a good prod - no point sending it in for welding to find it fails the MOT on some weak stuff you have missed

Thats nothing. Just get it welded up. I have just had mine done almost the full length of the drivers side inner sill and several bits on the passenger side too. Cost me £250 all in. The hole will be bigger than you can see now, but its fixable no problem to someone who knows welding cars.

So glad I have JDM cars as none of them have any rust. Its a shame really as the UK cars really do rust, the three cabs i have scrapped were just horrendous. Preventative measures every year are always worth while and the only way is to give the car a good prod in all the usual places Mitch, I have a welder you are most welcome to borrow, its a mig welder and perfect for your job, just need to buy the gas from Halfords or similar outlet. The one thing to remember though is that if there is rust in that place then very highly likely you will have some more somewhere else,it may not be a sbad but at least you can clean it all up and coat it in waxoyle. I have sprayed my underneath with stone chip guard, works just a well but i have sprayed waxoyle in the places that are hidden and known water traps.

if you are welding it yourself make sure it is pure grinded metal your welding to, prep is at least 50% of a good weld, ensure there is no rust at all where your welding and you buff the plate up that your welding onto as metal sheets come with a grey coating which is oil based and mig welding hates oil. I will hopefully be doing a step by step for welding my sills which i will post in my project or possibly a seperate guide :)

Thanks for the suggestions there guys, I am going to ask the garage that does my MOT on thursday to do the welding before they do the MOT, the whole of the car is undersealed, there is no rust any where else, which is one of the reasons why I bought the car.

It seems that the underseal has been chipped away and it just happens to have rusted, there was no advisories on last years MOT and it doesn\'t look new, but hey, it needs sorting.

Most of that damage you see there (if you can see the bent sill) was done by Kwik Fit when they for some reason jacked up the whole car on the front sill to change the rear tyres as I know it wasn\'t that wrecked when I got it lol

Anyhow, thanks for all the advice :) I will post up the results later

Garages have a habit if jacking FC\'s on the chassis stiffening bars - they are very thin and won\'t poke up with it!

If take the car to get the tyres done, tell them it must only be jacked on the front subframe or the rear diff.  Any other method of lifting on the cars floor will result in damage.

My advice would be to get tyres done at a small independant in the future - they may not be as cheap, but as a rule they are far more competant.

Regarding the rust issue:

If I were you I would do as much of the prep work as you can, leaving just the welding for the garage to do.  You don\'t want someone damaging the interior trim etc.
The trim around the footwells comes away easily as long as you are gentle.

All of the carpets have been up on that side already when the boost controller was fitted, so they are all loose and easy to take up, just cleaned the whole car as well :)

I currently have a welder near me who is currently doing my mini for me, will let you know how he does, think I will just ask the garage to do it this time round, will chat to them thursday before the MOT to see if they can do it, but its only a patch, its the only piece of rust on my entire car lol all caused by a chipped underseal lol booo
