Title: speedo converter: any good?
Post by: jas_hall on March 04, 2009, 06:26:45 PM
Hi all,
can you please tell me: are these Ebay type Electronic Speedo Converters any good and do they have any adverse effects on the car? All I want to do is convert the digital odometer readout from kilometers to miles. As far as I know the speedo is working in mph but does that effect the odometer or not? These converters also promise to de-limit the speed (which I\'m not intresed in) so where do you wire it and how does it work and can I use it only on the odometer?

any help would be appreciated.

cheers

jason

I got mine off ebay not long after I got mine rx7. it works great got pip @ WGT to fit it as he knew a better place to fit it so the clocks did not have to be removed. Here is the one I got click here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAZDA-RX7-BONGO-FAMILIA-SPEEDO-CONVERTER-DELIMITER-CHIP_W0QQitemZ120384214504QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item120384214504&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1689%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318) hope this helps.

All the converter does is slow the clocks down, so when your doing 100kph it shows 60kph. The odometer is also slowed down, it doesn\'t change the reading but it starts counting up slower(in mph) The 180kph limit is still there but you would have to be doing 180mph for it to kick in.
Ebay one\'s are fine

Hope this helps Phil

Does this mean that it might already have a converter on it? If the speedo is runnig in MPH doesn\'t that mean that the odometer is ALSO in MPH? Does the same cable control both the speedo and the odometer?

Its not a cable its an electrical signal from the vehicle speed sensor which is on the gearbox. But if your speedo is in mph your odometer will be to. unless someone has changed the speedo face which is unlikely.

thanks for clearing that up. is there any way that I can alter the odometer to show the current milage. i.e. 41000 miles instead of 67000 kilometers. but, is this paramount to "clocking" and therfore frowned upon by "the authorities"!

is there really any point when if I ever part with the car it will only be to another \'7 enthusiast who will know all about the kilometer/mile problem with imports anyway?

I looked in to this myself when I had the chip fitted got a quote for £120 to change the reading to miles!!!!! I just kept the paper work to show when the conversion chip was fitted then all other records are in miles after.
