Title: Charge coolers ??
Post by: neil_jdmr on March 01, 2009, 11:36:10 PM
Why dont any of the rotary community use chargecoolers instead of intercoolers???

I read up a report on chargecoolers recently and on paper they seemed perfectly suited to our application as cooling a rotary is difficult enough anyway so an air to air cooler with a water jacket maybe just the key.

Opinions please ?

dont have oppinions on why people dont make them, but a fair few big power supras run them... only prob would be cooling the water quick and good enough.

There are plenty of rotaries running charge coolers in the UK

there are a few rx\'s running the charge cooling setup in the UK, its not a bad thought really but perhaps comes down to cost of getting everything done ?

I did have the thoughts of getting my old purple fd done with a CC but after talking with a few people the general thought was if you are not going to be doing track action but just usual road driving theres no point.

Kev in York( I think) runs a charge cooler on his twin turbot cosmo, the only problem I can see from running a charge cooler is the length of the hose pipe from the tap!

i have a charge cooler on my gt4, and the only problem is heat soak, granted it is placed on top of the engine and not ideal, but on an rx7 you would probably have really bad heat soak (using on the roads/traffic jams) due to how hot the bays can get. The only way i could see around this would be to have a large capacity water system and a pump which would pump the water quickly enough. Also a vented bonnet to try to keep the heat rising out, just my thoughts, nothing proven or tested.

What inlet temps are normal for charge cooling? We\'ve just put a front mounted intercooler on Grants car and the temps are around 18-20c at the moment.

I was under the impression charge coolers were only used when there\'s a lack of space. It\'s less efficient to have air to water to air cooling than it is to have air to air.
