Title: Oil cooler time!
Post by: A R on February 27, 2009, 01:32:16 AM
Oh well I started the car this morning and there was oil in the same area as before ( by the oil cooler lines ) and more so. After cleaning the area with acetone, I was able to see the hairline crack on the top one. I tightened it a little to see if it was a crack or a casting defect, it was crak. I tried to epoxy the crack and upon starting the engine oil was flowing like crazy and that was even with the area fully covered by the epoxy???

I am starting to think that all the crud that came out of the oil cooler was sealing the leak!!!

BTW I only epoxied it as the big nut at the bottom was already epoxied at some point and impossible to remove.

Is it worth it repairing the oil cooler? I\'ve seen a few one in the US and they are quite dear new.

I read this post but it did not say which cooler the OP was using:

Any help in figuring out a way out of this appreciated.

Tim at RX Motors in Dorset might have S/Hand bits, also he was the guy that Baz 7 found with the S/H stainless exhaust. Jimmys over near Kings Lynn is another place.
Rotechnics in Reading  should be a good contact for new parts also WGT in Cheshire, but generally WGT don\'t return e mails. Don\'t understand that.

The Series 2 cooler sits under the rad as you know but on the Series 3 there was a bit of a mod and the cooler is a smaller unit in a better location atop the engine, a bigger water cooling radiator then takes up the space in front.

this is the write up i followed as i have a s3 with no oil cooler as stock, you should only need to make up some brackets to hold a gen 2 cooler

You should have asked around dude, would have saved yourself a few quid and a few miles. Good luck with Tim - you\'ll probably get there and find it\'s on a car that burried 5 deep in darkness:rollin

JB Weld may be able to help in the meantime - I\'ve heard and seen some good results with it, when used correctly.

Ary, I\'ve noted a Scrapyard in Newcastle (Tyne) that is breaking a yellow series 2. I saw an S2 wheel and the end of an exhaust poking out.
Backworth Autos, NE27 0HZ. 0191 268 5382
Don\'t know anything about them though.
