Title: Relocation reloctaion relocation
Post by: Ada7 on February 23, 2009, 12:55:36 PM
I\'ve been having problems with my battery since the bad weather we had a while back and now i think it\'s finally completely knackered. It just wont hold a charge anymore.
So, i\'m now thinking of relocating it to the boot. the only thing is a dont like the idea of having an ugly box in the boot (unless it\'s very small) and so thought of putting it in the spare wheel well.
Where\'s the best place to get a decent small battery from and what else would i need for both the box and wheel well ideas?

someone on here had the great idea of making a foam insert for the spare wheel well with a cut-out for a dry battery to lie down sideways.

i can\'t remember the OP\'s name to credit them! saves buying a box and finding somewhere to bolt it down.

Been told these are good batteries but which would be the right size?

They look pretty high spec and possibly more than you need in terms of their impact resistance. Then again it\'s never going to hurt :D Not too sure but assuming they\'re bascially high spec sealed lead acid batteries then the capacity you\'ll need will be probably be mainly driven by how long you leave the car between runs as they might discharge fairly rapidly (though someone might correct me here). So if you only use the car once a month you\'ll need a bigger capacity one to ensure you have enough charge left to turn the car over.

That and making sure it can produce enough current would size the battery I think, but not knowing the requirements of the FD I can\'t help much further.

red top batteries you have to be careful with. They don\'t hold their charge for long (As they are small batteries) and if they go flat and are need charging up, then you actually reduce the life of the battery.

Hi,

Me and my brother use the Odyssey PC680 battery. It\'s small and very good, I think it\'s 7kg or something close to. I would compare it to normal battery for cranking strength and length of time, I run a normal set up, alarm car stereo and usual electrics, no probs and I have left it sat for a few weeks with no probs. I would say longer than a month and I tend to disconnect the battery caus the alarm will drain it eventually.

That\'s where I got mine.

Hope that helps

feelio - Do you know what capacity (Ah) your battery is and what peak current it produces?

Here is the specification from the website.....don\'t really know that much about it myself except that it does the job very well for such a small battery. I\'ve got pics of my engine bay if you want an idea of size.

Looks almost identical to the redtop 25 battery. It\'s interesting that the spec mentions the hawker genesis batteries as I\'ve heard good things about them in the past. Sounds like this one has been built for higher vibration (as in military aircraft vibration!).

You still planning on doing this Adam?

Even if you put it in the spare wheel well in foam, you still need to fix it down, unless you want a battery in the back of your neck in a prang.

Its going to be in a bracket and rivited to the bulkhead under the rear seats so its not going to go anywhere once in. :D
