Title: Single or Twin?
Post by: Chachi on February 20, 2009, 01:09:24 PM
I have a 92 3rd Gen Rex.. I\'m about to replace the damaged twin turbo unit that was in it. Do I replace this with a twin turbo unit or a single? I\'ve heard possitives about both but never really had feedback. In you opinions which way should I go? advantages/dsadvantages?

Many Thanks!

are you running an apexi pfc already ??

or a front mount / decatted exhaust etc..

if you decide to go the single route - you might spend a fortune on all the other supporting mods ?

well a single is going to be better if you want more power in the future however it costs alot more, you can prob buy a set of second hand twins for around £150-300.  If you are pretty standard at mo to go to a single you need:
1.ecu - apexi power fc
2.bigger injectors and fuel pump
3.intercooler

these depend on how much power you want, if you want to go 300+bhp you will need other things like a uprated clutch etc etc etc

I have IC, exhaust, decat, downpipe, Induction kit, larger injectors, Fuel pump, FPR, Apexi PFC and I\'m still on twins.

They have been set to run in parellel with all the rats nest removed etc - such a difference over a stock car.

I\'m more or less set to go single without much more expense.

yes im the same i got to that stage where i had everything done and the twins were maxed out, i think the most you can get out of twins is roughly around 400bhp

I rehosed my whole vacuum system yesterday, the difference is astonishing, the car boosts perfectly and feels so much smoother and quicker, the turbos respond so well when you drop a gear and floor it, it was well worth the 8 hours it took me todo it.

Keep the twins, when they work they are awesome!

Personally, I\'d recommend getting a replacement twin turbo pack, and then trying out how/if you like the feel of it running non-sequentially (as per a small single).

A number of places will perform this mod for you (and I think Haywood will reverse it for free if you don\'t get on with it - unless you go the permanent non-seq conversion obviously - but don\'t hold me to that!).

As mentioned, you\'ll be definitely needing an Apexi PFC or similar to do this, but would work out a cheaper option to start with to check if you actually enjoyed the feel of the car running single.

^^^^ This.

How much power do you want?

I\'m running 343 on stock twins and just about to go in for mapping with new fuelling to see where that gets me. I love the stock twin setup - pickup is immense, power is there when you need it, and next to no lag, it\'s brilliant. I\'m hoping for around 360/370, which is adequate for a lot of people.

I spent £310 on buying new solenoids in the rack and gave the 1 way valves a good clean and then araldited the joins to make sure they have the longest lifetime possible.

Had a little tussle with my friends 02 3.2 Boxster S and it was dead even, im completely stock except for an Apexi dual intake and HKS ignition Amp.

depending on budget i would go single for simplicity, power and sound but you will see more lag my t04 is on full boost at 4000rpm but this can be helped with porting, but tbh it makes me smile everytime i drive it and thats priceless

At the moment I\'m running the Apexi PFC and my exhaust is a de-cat. I\'ve got no front mount but my intercooler is a HKS. Where could I find twin turbo units for so cheap?? I\'ve been hunting high and low but I\'ve had no luck. Also you mentioned the rats nest, I\'ve had a look at websites saying how to get rid of \'em. Easy job or leave it to WGT? Personally I enjoy the twin turbo, the lack of lag is top! I imagined the single turbo to feel a bit horrible after having the twin.

You can\'t ditch the rat\'s nest if you want the sequential twins - You can trim a large part of it, but you can\'t ditch it altogether as you need several of the solenoids for the sequential switching operations.

Learning so much here! I\'ll look into getting rid of what I can, most likely leave it to WGT. I\'m not sure what mines running at bhp wise, I was told it was around the 340+bhp mark.. Had myself a tussle a week into having it with a Ferrari 360. To my suprise I stuck with it all the way!...whether or not the Ferrari driver was trying or nots a different question but it must of looked great to all the patrons watching in the local beer gardens.
