Title: engine rebuilds
Post by: Adam fc on February 15, 2009, 09:48:24 AM
Hi,
1.i recently had a compression test done on my 88 fc egi 90.000  and it came out with 6.6 with even compression on all chambers and im hoping it wil last to the end of the year till i can afford to have a rebuild, im looking to have it rebuilt with new seals pumps tips and any other general wearing parts and im interested in having a street port done whilst its apart.
Ive heard though that the emissions will be greatly affected?? just wondering if anyone has had there emissions to high to pass the MOT??

2.one more thing what should i expect to pay for a rebuild with pumps seals tips etc?? Ive had a qoute from a local performance garage at £1700??im ot sure what the going rate is??

thanks

Hi Adam,

You really need a rotary specialist for the job! Tim at RX Motors would be closest to you, near Blandford in Dorset, or Re-worx in Portsmouth,
Bob

£1700 is a very good price i dont think there are alot that could beat that quite alot of the specialists charge £2500+

Personally i think that is false economy, And i think the total price at the end of the work may well be rather more than 1700, but then i view a rebuild as being an opprtunity to increase the value and reliability of the car for use and re-sale. and when i had mine done made sure it included new housings etc, rather than re-use the old ones, IMHO i think 2500 is good value with a guarantee from a specialist, i would not want any garage learning on my engine,

Since this is an EGI it should not cost as much as a turbo engine to rebuild.
Also porting will not affect emmisions.
6.6 bar compression is not to bad and could well last alot longer than a year if properly maintained.

just had a qoute from rx motors in dorset/blanford they qouted me a happy £1500,and a street port on top of that was and extra £300.Thought that was top dollar really.
Am i being ambitious by aiming for 200bhp from my egi? looking at vairious porting options such a streetport or maybee a half bridge port?? what sort of steps would i take too get my 200bhp lol or am i in a dream world? lol. ps dont really want to go down the forced induction route either.thanks

200bhp is possible with a street port, but you will need a full through exhaust, maybe throttle bodies, which will require some sort of ecu upgrade. I belive brett had around 190 out of his old one. Though 200 on an old street ported engine (assuming your not replacing rotor housings may not be possible, ive never heard of it. a Bridge should get you there, but you\'ll be needing to spend quite a bit on fueling and mapping. Tbh with the amount your looking at spending you might as well get a TII. Even at 200bhp it will be faster due to the added torque. Also it will be more fuel efficient.

but 6.6 isn\'t too bad for an egi, specially as its even, ive heard these cars can be run into the low 5\'s.

They \'rebuilt\' my mates 10a, and sorry i wouldn\'t recommend them! Speak to "oldone" on exil e-rotorsport.com - most of the top tuners outsource their porting to him anyway! ;)

I think every company has good and bad experiances about them, but all UK Rotary companies in the generally do very good work, its only you hear about the bad experiances , Companies cant be 100 percent all the time, mistakes will be made.
RX Motors have built the fastest RX7 in the UK so they must know how to make a good engine lol

I would argue UK tuners are really poor. Their shouldn\'t be \'bad experiences\'.

Well I can only talk about my experiances, but Reworx have only done good quality work on my car, Geff,Chris and Max have always delivered for me. So would never describe them as you say poor but very good.

In a perfect world they should never be bad experiances, but so long as mistakes rectified in the long run its all good.

If everyone thought every uk rotary tuner is poor they would go under, so who on earth would we take our rotary cars to have work done??

I agree, but some don\'t know any better. Some just keep going back time and time again and think it\'s normal for Rotaries to be like this! :WaveBye

Not true,get your facts right! I replaced 3 apex seals,that is all,hardly a rebuild at £200 +the 3 seals.

Both Tim at RX motors and myself at Hayward Rtoary do our own porting as does Rotechnics, and WGT so I am not sure where this idea of porting being outsourced by most of the top tuners comes from.
Also I think you are only really qualified to talk on a public forum about a tuner if you personally have had experience with any of them in question as opposed to hearsay from a 3rd party.

So can i just use a regular petrol engine compretion test kit (from ebay) to test my TII engine? I think it could have one foot out the door already. Prob gonna need a rebuild fairly soon.
