Title: Poor mans porting
Post by: Bob Monkhouse on February 13, 2009, 06:42:26 PM
:Giggle:GiggleHaving viewed and commented on pouring coke into a rotary engine, it brought to mind something about a thread I had seen on an American site somewhere about a cheap way to extrude hone(a really expensive method of porting a four stroke head) and I thought, if you can use coke or water or atf to clean a rotary engine out then you could use this American method to port the engine without stripping it. The method simply would be to take your air filters off( you could just take the elbow off the end of the plenum but you wouldn\'t get the turbine blades on the turbos polished). Then get some kiln dried sand from the builders merchants, start your engine and then get someone to slowly tip the sand into the turbos. You would have to get the engine above 3000rpm to get the turbos really spinning.I\'m told that the engine will be a bit lumpy while you\'re feeding the sand in but it will clear out and you will feel an immediate boost in power. It would be interesting to actually do this whilst running the car on a dyno and just watch those ponies climb!!!! The advantages of this method of tuning are numerous:1.You don\'t need an expensive engine rebuild to open those ports out,2. It will automatically de-coke the engine and even the exhaust system, and 3.you won\'t have the ball ache of changing the spark plugs as it will sand blast them in situ saving £40 on new ones.:Hammer:Hammer:Hammer:Hammer

sounds like a awesome idea bob i might try that!!!!!!! :cool

i guess the amount of sand you tip in would determine the size of the port you get

You are absolutely spot on there. There are different grades of sand available so if you use a coarse grit to start with and then gradually reduce the size will make sure you get a good finish on the ports, not too much of a polish though or you may get fuel puddling and incomplete combustion. (As well as the exhaust smelling of Blackpool beach, it will smell of unburnt fuel). If this happens then just go back to slightly coarser sand.

some great advice bob, i guess you have to think of it like when you are rubbing something down with wet and dry, use the coarser stuff first then finer stuff to finish off

Well, it all depends on the amount of carbon in the engine.I\'m sure it will benefit all engines but especially ones that have been run on poor quality oil and thus will have lots of carbon deposits, the process will clean all the carbon out and give better compression.
A couple of my mates used to run a stone cleaning business and they got sand delivered by the ton, so if you know any stone cleaners then you would probably get sand cheaper from them. However, all the local cats used to use the sand storage place as a .... ole so you need to bear in mind that it might need sieving to get the lumps out (they aren\'t actually baby sausages so don\'t try to put them in a sand(!!!!)wich) or the exhaust will stink of cat.....

It is important to note that sand from the beach is quite good for this.
Mazda actually found out that when they were racing at Daytona (which has a sandy beach nearby) that if they left their air filter off the cars got quicker and quicker through the 24 hour race due to the amount of sand that the engines were ingesting from the air,so that must have been due to the "Porting Effect"!!!!

Also the whole car was much more shiny at the end of the race than the beginning!

Carl

What you forgot to point out though is that the sand at Daytona is very dry, any attempt to use sand from scarborough beach or similar would result in the engine running lumpy(think peripheral porting at 10000rpm) due to the amount of dog.... on the beach. I would like to point out that the beach at Scarborough is also quite short and not really suitable for 200mph runs.

all ready been tried, cant find the thread but somone did this to an audi a3 and poured it in, started making funny sounds, then smoked abit then the engine virtually died and eventually seized

Bugger I\'ve been rumbled!! This thread was a tad plagiarised in the hope someone might point me in the right direction to the thread you mention. To be honest, it must be the funniest thing I\'ve read in a long time and I was hoping to be able to share it with the rest of the members on the MRC forum. So ,don\'t believe everything you read but its made me laugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i\'ve heard of people using this arrangement with squirty cream guns from starbucks (obviously without the squirty cream in!). the stuff used to pressurise these is... nitrous oxide!

chavtastic.
