Title: Clutch has gone?
Post by: dthebuk on February 13, 2009, 05:21:06 PM
Ok basically I cant put the car in gear when the engine is running. The clutch feels normal it just doesn\'t do anything. If i turn the engine off and put the car in gear ( no need for clutch), when i turn the car the car lurches forwards.

So am i right in thinking that there could be a leak somewhere? If so, do they usually occur in a certain place? Also, any idea\'s how much this kinda thing would cost to fix, and if its a garage job or not?

this is  S5 TII btw

cheers

Sounds like either the master or slave cylinder has had it.  Is there still fluid in the reservoir?

actually, how do you check if there is a problem with the master cylinder? or the slave cylinder even? Problem is i don\'t know how they work to well. Bah i\'ll whip it out tomorrow and have a nosey :D

could be pilot bearing, or a bent clutch fork, or clutch release bearing.

To check to see if the clutch fork is being operated - get someone to press the clutch pedal whilst you look at the slave cylinder on top of the gearbox.  It should operate in and out and move the top of the clutch fork.  If that\'s moving, then the problem isn\'t likely to be Master/slave cylinders - but possibly any of the above items.

If it makes any difference you have a Centreforce uprated clutch.
Slave cylinder  first bet?

As Below..

awesome!, was that changed before 50k miles? thats when it got a new one.

yea that and the master, havn\'t had a chance to look at it all though.

as sad as it may be, the cars feels like its completly different to when you would have owned it. The shocks are pretty much dead making it feel so wrong, even in comparison to my egi which has nakered shocks!!

anyway, do you have any more pics? pretty interested to see whats happened to the car

If I remember Clutch at 50k and rebuild at 59500 give or take, will sort some pics. what milage is it on now? think it was about 67K when i sold it. Did you get much history with the car there \'was\' stacks.

I think it\'ll be the slave cylinder. Do like Prof says, get someone to operate the clutch whilst you look at the slave cylinder. It\'s on the passenger side top of the gear box. You can just and so see it from under the bonnet (you may need a torch though). They are easy enough to change, just 2 bolts holding it on 13mm spanner iirc and the hose that runs along the bulk head. This is also prone to leaking so check that too. Oh and its as gooder time as any to replace the hose for a nice braided one if your feeling flush!

its on 89k now. The last owner had it garaged for ages. Did you get it rebuilt at RX motors? it had the most shocking receipt ever. Er it had a bit of history.
All fits in a clear plastic wallet though and it doesn\'t date back that far.

did you have the clifford put on the car? its got to be the most anoying alarm ive ever whitnessed :spank

haha awesome, did you come to this conclusion because it doesn\'t seem like the master cylinder is leaking? Hmm i shall have a look into spangly parts. IM guess braided lines are less prone to leaking?

yeah the braided line wont split with age - there is a write up somewhere about how to do it :D

right, its not the slave cylinder, that works fine. The master cylinder has slightly more than the max fluid in it. Sounds like its getting pricey eek

isnt there an inspection panel that you can remove and look at the clutch - or is that just on FD\'s

so when you push down on the clutch - you can see the slave cylinder moving freely ??

the only thing im thinking - is it moving enough .. is there any slack in it ( not sure if this can actually happen or not though ! )

and i take it that the car is now stuck in gear ???
Title: Clutch has gone?
Post by: Prof on February 14, 2009, 03:59:30 PM
So with engine running it can\'t be put in gear, but if the engine isn\'t running you can select gear, and then when you try and start the engine it lurches (suggesting still in gear).

Could be clutch is worn, pilot bearing or release bearing - either way - all that should get replaced with a clutch kit

car is not stuck in gear, prof is right.

as for how for how far the slave cylinder moves, i honestly don\'t know how far it should move. At a guess it looks like its moving about an inch, maybe 2.

Looking through the diagrams in the haynes manual, there doesn\'t seem to be an inspection pannel.

Is a bent clutch fork something that can be checked outside the transmission? I\'m not to sure on how far it goes in.

If the fork is fine, how sure can any of you guys be that its one of these bearings that has gone? Ive read/been told by others, that if the release bearing is damaged the car should make a noise in neutral with the engine running. So that puts pretty much all of it down to the pilot bearing.

Right so any idea how much rotechniks would charge me to sort something like this? I would ideally like to fix it myself but dropping out the transmission with a car on jack stands isn;t my idea of a good time....seeing as the most hands on things ive done have been playing with lights and air intakes. Anyone wanna lend us a garage with a pit? :cheers

LOL the alarm was a PITA ! had it towed once 50 miles once a week after it was first fitted.PM for more details best not said on here.

RX-motors did the rebuild with new housings as in pic above.
Clutch and decat down pipe from RX motors

RearExhaust sections from  WGT
and boost chip as they call it.
+ pulley and belts

gauge\'s and both strut braces, and uprated diff mounts all from USA
Brake disks from Rotechnic

thats about all I remember was a while back and of course the car has had a
few owners since so things change.

Hope this helps

im SURE there is a recent post in the 2nd gen forum about someone asking about a clutch ??

Quote from: dthebuk;584499as for how for how far the slave cylinder moves, i honestly don\'t know how far it should move. At a guess it looks like its moving about an inch, maybe 2.

Sounds about right - the cylinder moves the clutch fork - and it\'s pivots on the bell housing - so it moves the fork a bit more than that. If it\'s got out of shape then it may not move the clutch in or out far enough.

Quote from: dthebuk;584499Looking through the diagrams in the haynes manual, there doesn\'t seem to be an inspection pannel.

Not sure about all bell housings, but I have a plate both on the bottom and top of the housing that appear to serve no other purpose - there are a couple of 10mm bolts that hold a thin plate on - so I am guessing they would allow you to inspect the clutch without taking the thing off the car. If you\'ve got the stock intercooler - that will most likely have to come off, not sure whether you can get to the top plate with that off - I\'ll go have a look tomorrow in the daylight - post a pic.

Quote from: dthebuk;584499Is a bent clutch fork something that can be checked outside the transmission? I\'m not to sure on how far it goes in.

Difficult - not sure if you\'d see it through the top inspection hole.

Quote from: dthebuk;584499If the fork is fine, how sure can any of you guys be that its one of these bearings that has gone? Ive read/been told by others, that if the release bearing is damaged the car should make a noise in neutral with the engine running. So that puts pretty much all of it down to the pilot bearing.

I had a problem with my pilot bearing - the car would select gears fine when it was cold, but at some point the clutch would become useless - leaving the car in gear - and prevent seleting gears. I suspect that this fails in more than one manor - so your symptoms may point to this. Apparently the bearing was slipping on the shaft as it warmed up - so if the car was left to cool - it would be fine again.

Can\'t remember how much they charged me now - they had to rework the end of the shaft so the bearing would sit firmly on it, and the labour would be equivalent to a clutch change (about 3-4 hours) plus a bit - parts shouldn\'t be much if the clutch is in good shape - but if it\'s got wear and tear it would be a good time to change it anyway, as the labour cost wouldn\'t be any more. It\'s defo not a job you want to do on the driveway - been there - not comfortable at all. Plus if you do go ahead and attempt a job like that - wedge the engine at the front - as when you undo the bell housing off the back of the engine - it will rock forward on the engine mounts and you\'ll never get the gearbox/bell housing back on it again without a massive struggle :(

cheers for all the advice.

you guys are legends :D

I think i\'ll see what  can do tomorrow then give mrp/rotechniks a ring and get some quotes.

a garage with a pit sounds like a decent future investment tho....bet they\'ll cost a bomb though!

Just find a hole that the council have dug in our roads. Pull the car over the top of it and hey presto, got yourself a pit. You do pay your road tax after all!
