ok so i had the EGI running yesturday, hadnt been run for about a week. After on start up it smoked quite a bit, Ive already spoken to brett about this and it seems pretty normal. Though once warm it still puts out a tiny bit of smoke and it seems to swap from tail pipe to tail. As in one tail pipe will put out some smoke, then it will stop and the other one will put out some smoke. It doesn\'t put much out at all but the TII i have doesnt out out any what so over once its been running a bit. The exhaust is a racing beat header which goes to the stock TII cat back, there are no cats.
Ive filled the coolant to the max and cranked the engine without the egi fuse and nothing happened which i presume is good.
Could the smoke be related to the engine running horrendously rich and having the TPS out? Thats the only thing i can come up with.
thanks in advance people :cheers
from my exp can take to garage and they can stick the sensor thing (the one they stick up the exhaust to measure the hydrocarbons etc) into the cooling system to see if theres any exhaust gasses in there.
tho i been advised that it isnt 100% accurate as if the sensor thing gets wet then can foul the result.
yea it should be going to a garage. But i dont wanna fork out the odd grand for insurance to discover the waterseals have gone. I cant get it to a garage for a while you see and it runs out of tax at the end of feb!
cheers anyway :D
grand for insurance!!, that seems quite expensive. im only paying 360 a year or £30 a month style, from that swift cover!!
Try using \'k seal\' (frm Clive over at MRP) im gonna try it in my fc n see if it improves things. Still gonna change engine but jus tryin this miracle stuff to see if it works. Sais works for upto .75mm cracks. If crack was bigger i guess ud loose lots more water!
are you 20 with 3 points and a postcode in slough ?
:D

good point, might give him a call about it tomorrow
Oh, another sign of water seal mite be coolant comes out of expansion tank aft a long drive? Or is that only for pressurised systems?
Have a look in the oil cap for mayo, you will get a bit but should not see much. Water seal fail you will get white smoke from the exhaust. Blue smoke all the time might well be the oil control rings worn, thats going to give smoke all the time and especially when its warm. Dont discount the OMP either, this has been known to over oil at times but hard to diagnose that unless you block it off and run a pre-mix.
Try some stop smoke additive, you have nothing to lose if you have exhausted all other avenues, compression check might pick up worn oil control rings.
BTW I get both my TII Cabs insured for £380 for the pair, fully comp with AON,......but I am 40.
Have a look on pineapple racing\'s website. They have a kit for pressure testing a system.
Shaun
well its literally a trace amount of white smoke, though its a trace amount that the TII doesn\'t have.
In all fairness the car hadn\'t been driven for a while. I\'m taking it back up to notts this sunday so i shall she if its still smoking after a nice long drive.
Ah i just realized i forgot to ring MRP, oops.
what about k-seal? good idea?
380 for the pair? dam!! i couldn\'t get £380 on a 1.1 litre 106 !!
I tried K seal in my engine when I had an intermittent minor seal leak causing just a small amount of coolant to leak out into the expansion tank every once in a while. It failed to cure the problem and eventually the water seals failed requiring an engine rebuild. When I stripped the engine down I found copper deposits from the K seal throughout the water ways indicating that it had circulated well, but none in the water seal groves so it had not got through to the critical area.
I pay £147 for my insurance, but I\'m no spring chicken.
John
i stuck some k seal in my system today, looks promising. the smoke i used to get reduced a lot once the engine is warm.
no more white smoke n sweetish, its just a little smoke which is just.. think dirty is the best way to describe it.
will take to garage coming week to try emissions test.
lets see what happens.
might need oil change etc but nt sure if should do or not as will be getting the block swapped.
oldrotary: k seal sias for .75mm cracks or smaller. maybe urs was bit too big?
im not saying it does work or does not but can only judge from the results lol
will fire her up tmr to see if theres no more bad smoke i was getting before.
Any other news on this?
Having a similar problem, not sure if i should try this k-seal stuff?
imo k-seal would be good for rad cracks but if the system is pressurised from water seal fail then k-seal wont help.
another test garage can do, tho not 100% accurate is get the emissions stick thing (the one they stick up the exhaust) and place at top if rad filler neck. can test if any emissions gasses are in the cooling system.
The car sorted itself out in the end. Doesn\'t smoke at all. I think It had just been a bit wet around the time. Car is now sold :(
The most common symptom of a dead water seal is the rad hoses are hard (have lots of pressure in them) very soon after starting from cold, if they are not hard then you may have another problem like a bad rad or bad rad caps etc.
Thing is its often not the water seals that go, its more likely the water seal locating groove has failed on the cold side so the symptoms are very mild against a Boinger head gasket failure.
