Title: Is my rotor on the way out??
Post by: Gregory_Da_Grasshopp on February 13, 2009, 10:52:28 AM
Hi

Yesterday i put 99 octane in the rx7 it usually it gets 97.

I wouldn\'t have thought this would have caused a problem. But...

When i having a nice spirited drive last night, after about 2-3 miles a got a loss in power and all of a sudden it comes back!
This was at about 6k rpm in 4th! so i slowed down and then tried increasing speed in 3rd, fine and then into 4th no issue! so i took it slow to the next junction! I pulled out and changed to second just below 7k rpm and then as i got to about 4k rpm the surge happened again! stuttered abit and then came back! quite strange! then in 4th again not pacing it i put my foot down and then at about 4-5k it did it again and felt like it was goin to cut out again! pulled it out of gear and reved a little its sounded a little weird!!

Could this be something to do with fuel or may the coilpacks/ leads/plugs!

I recent prob iv had is needing to deflood it, not every time i drive it! But all i do then is remove the egi fuse crank for 4-5 seconds plop fuse back in and we have contact!

would that be related to the sudden loss in power and then back again!!
its only ever done this once or twice before and thats when im going sideways and have hardly any fuel!! it stutters!!
How can you check the condition of the engine as such?!!

Any advice??

Did you get a chance to look at the boost guage?

ohh sorry this is an 89 N/A. with a slight blow on the mid section pipe! flutters a bit! ticks over no probs, when a increase the revs slowly it changes tones at bout 3k! sounds like air gettin trapped and then increase revs again it seems to clear! i did record it on my phone but the sound quality is low!

Could be impedence on the injectors, the secondaries come online at 3800rpm (give or take) in the EGi.  Check all the earths in the engine bay.

Also, its worth ensuring that you have new fuel filters (the high pressure one is in the engine bay, on the bulk head ont he passenger side, the low pressure sock type is int he tank) as low fuel can cause some interesting power issues.

How much fuel was in the tank?

fuel was just above half way its now just below!! it could well be it just needs good service ie fuel filter oil change/filter! will check all the earths at the weekend!
could higher octane fuel do anything?
it used 2 run better when i put 99 in!!

what are the tell tails signs of the rotor going?
it does like to backfire when u rev it a little but only say after a long drive and then sitting in traffic! u can pop it like a cannon!!

They all tend to pop and bang a little - especially on the overrunb or when the engine is cold.

Assuming no one has messed with the timing ordinary unleaded should be fine.

Has the car been modified?

nope nothing! only thing that is non standard in the mid section back! some1 put a different mid section pipe!
Which has been bodged so there ain\'t so many holes!!

Looks like a powerflow jobby.

I\'d start by checking the earths, then check the filters.  The EGi\'s deffo have a noticable hesitation around 4000rpm when cold, this problem can get much worse if there are earthing problems.

Beyond that, you need to start looking at the sparks :)

how many miles it done?
do the N/A have the 3800rev hesitation thing that TII\'s have?
i get loss of power at bends sometimes but thats only when less then 1/4 fuel in tank lol

its just turned 130k
it doesn\'t seem to hesitate as such its quite smooth through the rev range and goes faster at around 4-5k+
I will get the sound clip up nowish and get a vid over the weekend of in and out! Will try some different leads it has sat still since tuesday! but drivin it 10 miles to my parents no issues at all and i was caining it! and then this issue came up on the way back :(
