Title: first time start up preperation?
Post by: Jim_rx7 on February 09, 2009, 11:56:07 PM
So the rebuilt engine will be back in the car within a few days.

Just wondering what the routine should be once everything\'s connected back up again.

I had a look through my old posts etc from the last time, but couldn\'t find anything.

Thanks in advance!

the chances are you will probably flood the engine when you first start it.
I ended up having to tow mine!

But just make sure you have a very stong battery, and turn it over first for 20/30 secs without the ecu fuse in making sure oil is circulated.

I\'ll have a new battery and also connected to another car just to make sure!

Which is the ecu fuse?

The last one didn\'t flood so hope this doesn\'t!

Haha, thats the amount of vaseline you had in your Darren probably lol...

Mine started up first time after about 3 seconds, but i primed the fuel system.  If you have a blow off valve, drape a rag something over it cos lquid vaseline will spray everywhere lol...

Good luck with it mate, i know i was pooing myself 6 weeks ago when i started mine for the first time :D

Good call with the BOV. I would have been wondering what the hell it was spitting out! lol.

How do you go about priming the fuel system?

Last time it didn\'t start first time, but did second. I assumed simply because there was no/very little fuel pressure at first.

To prime the fuel system connect the diagnosis connector terminals F/P and GND with a jumper wire then just turn the key to number 2 dont start the engine. After about 5-10 seconds shoudl be enough for the pressure to have built up.  Turn the key off then remove the jumper wire then simply start the engine.

This is also a good way to check for fuel leaks first so i would recommend connecting the jumper wire and while it\'s priming check around the fuel lines and injectors :D

Hope this helps

another question...

The car\'s been sitting for about 3 months with the petrol that\'s in it.

Draining it isn\'t an option before starting it up.

Would throwing some octane booster in there sort it out if it\'s gone off?

It wont gave gone off in that time mate or have any issues, my bike has been sat for 2 and half years and started up no problem at the weekend with the same fuel :D

surely the fuel system just primes when you click it to position 2 or how would it start??

That\'s what a mate and I were discussing earlier.... ? When the car\'s off, there\'s no fuel pressure surely, then when you switch it on there is... no?

Yes it primes when you crank the engine over but this is just to ensure less cranking and also doing it this way you can check for leaks as all the fuel lines have been off...

if you turn the key two clicks the fuel pump will prime the whole system.

No, the fuel pump doesn\'t prime/start as standard until you are cranking the engine....

im not trying to argue with you but you are wrong im affraid.

if you put a gauge in line and turn the key to position two then you will see that you have pressure meaning it has primed the system. when you turn the key right round (ie to start the car) all that is doing is turning the starter motor and as soon as you let the key go it goes to position two again. fuel pump and ignition.

how else is the fuel pump going to keep running if it only works when cranking.

I dont wish to argue either but i am 100% correct, have you tried this then?

The fuel pump is controlled via the ECU which opens a circuit relay which in turn opens a fuel pump relay depending on the load on the engine via a throttle position sensor. Depending on the throttle position sensor, engine rev\'s etc the fuel pump will either be fed by a voltage through the fuel pump resistor or direct battery voltage. Since there is no engine load, rev\'s or/and the throttle position is closed the fuel pump will be off....  This is why there is the facility to jump the connections in the diagnostics port...

ok well i carnt comment on that as i dont know anything about ecu\'s etc lol

well i have an aftermarket fpr with a gauge and when i turn the ignition on the fuel pump primes and can see the gauge go up and also hear the pump whine and then stop when the correct pressure is reached.

this has been the same with all the other cars i have owned and worked on but i know the FD is complicated to say the least.

100% wrong!!!  Fuel pump runs when ignition is turned on,for a few secs to prime system.

which is the same in any car. didnt think the FD would be any different.

Ok fair enough, i bow down to Tims knowledge.  Please read page F-96 of the Mazda manual....

theres a fuel pump relay you could just bridge that with a paper clip,i crank the engine with no plugs and coils disconnected to prime pump and build up oil pressure then heat the plugs and fit them,if theres one thing you really dont need to worry about its lack of fuel and if it does flood whip the plugs out again and crank with the egi fuse out to disperse crap fuel vaseline and oil,job should be a goodn
