Title: Thinking of getting a 3rd gen
Post by: Iain C on April 06, 2004, 07:19:09 AM
I have wanted a 3rd gen for years now cos it has to be one of the best looking cars ...... ever!
I nearly brought 1 last april but chickened out and brought a clio cup.
Wot i really need to know is are they really that costly?
How much is a rebuild? This shouldnt really be a problem should it cos once its rebuilt it will do 70k? Just need to find 1 with a fresh motor.
Are they really a choice for a daily drive? I was planning to use it as a weekend only car.
The final stumbling point is insurance. Ive been quoted £1800 !! and im 26 with 4 years NCB, wot does everyone else pay?
Thanks guys..

Hi

Everyones advice to you if you get an RX7 is have some back up cash incase anything goes wrong.  Rebuilds start at £2500 - it depends how many things have broken to how much the rebuild will cost.  60-70k is can be the miles that a motor will need a refresh but they can go longer (or less!)

I used to drive mine everyday - bit bumpy and a bitch in traffic jams.  Now its just a weekend toy much cheaper in petrol too!

Mines a 92\' import, i\'m 23 and have a limited miles (6000) classic policy with Sureterm Direct, its £800 per year fully comp.

Just on the daily drive point.

Mines more or less stock and I think the ride and clutch are fine no complaints at all.

If you are considering an FD as your only car be sure, on top of the insurance, you can afford the fuel cuz you\'ll want to use it more then you think :)

When you rebuild put a 1.1 fiesta engine in - that should help your reliability and fuel:D  Seriously i\'m not sure apart from using the best parts you can get £££££.

Sorry should have said mines not stock - it has a racing clutch and it has been lowered so that is why traffics a bitch.

Yeah there will be a few of us there.

I have been using mine as a daily driver, and its ok.  I wouldnt like to recommend it though as it gets expensive very quickly and the more tuned it is the harder it is to live with.

My advice is to buy one, of course, but then get a cheap , reliable, economical car as a daily driver - or just to save on fuel when you feel the need.

Hey, come to think of it - I have a 1987 Mazda 323 1.5 GLX sedan for sale for only £350!

...Or just drive the RX-7 really, really slowly...

...As if! :D

I\'ve only had mine a few days but I\'m finding it virtually impossible to drive it like a normal car.  Problem is I\'ve got to or I\'m not going to be able to justify using it as a daily driver.  I keep telling myself that the first few weeks will be different \'cos it\'s my new toy, I\'m not used to it, and once I settle down a bit I\'ll drive it more \'sensibly\'.

...Yeah, as if, again! :D
