Title: Eccentric shaft bearing looks a bit iffy... advice please.
Post by: Jim_rx7 on February 05, 2009, 09:36:14 AM
Put the block back together last night and noticed the bearing in the end of the eccentric shaft looks a bit battered.

This is the end where the flywheel bolts on.

Any ideas on how I should replace it, what it\'s for and if it defo would need replaced? It just looks like it\'s seen better days.

thanks

Think it\'s called the pilot bearing (after a bit of hunting)

Also noticed some debris sitting in the bottom of the shaft which obviously needs cleaned out.

Anyone got any idea as to how much a new bearing costs and if it does need replaced, what\'s the best way to tackle this?

Get it replaced, usually done during a clutch change with a special tool. Not sure how you\'d do it without the correct tools and without damaging the ecc shaft. Not a very expensive part from memory.

Yeah, reasonably cheap.

Just need to suss out how to change it without a tool that costs £70 and I\'ll probably only use once!

I found one guide which sounds interesting?!

tools:

toilet paper or newspaper
bowl of water
old 3/8" extension (don\'t plan on using it again though)
hammer

basically tear some strips of the paper and wet it with water. stuff the wet bits into the rear of the eccentric shaft and use the extension and hammer to pack it down in there. the water and wet paper will displace the pilot bearing and force it out. it\'ll probably take 20 minutes or so, but it comes out without damage (except of the extension). just be sure to clean the bits of paper out when done. dry, lube, then install your new bearing and seal.

Well that didn\'t work! lmao.

Just made a ruddy mess and then I had to dig all the paper out!

Anyone got any other ideas short of using the proper tool?

A dremel, a very small screwdriver, a hammer and a pair of nose pliers. :)
